Top Ten Tuesday: The 10 Books I'm Kicking Off My TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic:
The Ten Books I'm Kicking Off My TBR

This week's topic is actually upcoming releases I'm on the fence about but that just doesn't apply to me. I'm rarely on the fence about a book. I either want to read it or I don't. The end. LOL I have sooo many books that I am truly excited to read so I never spend time on books that I'm lukewarm about or I'm not 100% excited about reading. So instead I'm going rogue and sharing the books that are about to be booted off my TBR. This kind of goes hand in hand with the actual topic now that I think about it. Because I either no longer want to read the book, too much time has passed and I've lost interest, or for some other random reason it just isn't going to happen. So, so long to these books... you're fired from my TBR. *waves bye-bye*

Highlander series #1
Karen Marie Moning

According to GoodReads, I added this to my TBR in 2009. And I've never started the series. At this point I'm no longer interested so away it goes.

Kristina Jones, Celeste Jones, Juilana Buhring

This nonfiction tale has been taking up space on my TBR since 2008. And I'm never going to read it.

Everlastin' series #2
Mickee Madden

I read the first book in this series, Everlastin', years and years ago and had plans of continuing on. Looking back it was really just a mediocre romance and I have no desire to read more.

Black Dagger Brotherhood series #1
J.R. Ward

Over the years this series has grown to 17 books (with more coming) and despite the high reviews I doubt I'm ever going to jump into a series that is already so lengthy.

The Darkest Minds series #1
Alexandra Bracken

Despite my husband having enjoyed the series, despite meeting Alexandra at ApollyCon, despite getting my books signed... I simply don't care about reading this one anymore.

Cecilia Tan

I feel like this was one (of many) that hit the shelves after the Fifty Shades craze. After sitting on my TBR for almost six years I think it's safe to say I'm never going to read it. Off it goes.

Elizabeth Eulberg

The synopsis of this one just sounds so middle-of-the-road and a story that's been told a thousand times already so I can't even imagine why it landed on my TBR in the first place.

Muse series #1
Cora Carmack

As much as I adore Cora Carmack, I know I'm never going to read this one. Plus, that hideous cover would burn my retinas. Someone please just cover it up. *feels woozy from hideous cover*

Guardian series #1
Michele Faison

I don't even remember adding this to my TBR. Some random book with an angel vibe? Doesn't even sound like something I would read. Farewell, angel book.

Blair Thornburgh

I guess this sounded entertaining when I added it to my TBR, but now it just sounds like a not-nearly-as-good take-off on Robin Benway's Audrey, Wait. The reviews don't do anything to convince me I should hang onto it, either.

Have you read any of the books that I'm booting from my TBR?

  1. LOL I love this! I need probably about a month to kick books off my tbr - mostly because too much time has passed and I'm not interested anymore. I will way that I read Moning's Highlander series and I'm 6? books into Ward's BDB series and I enjoyed them. But I know there are literally thousands of books on my GR TBR that I'm never going to get to and they should be removed. So you go, girl! Oh, and I giggle-snorted over your aversion to Carmack's cover! ;)

    1. Ha! Yeah, that Carmack cover is awful. I can only hope there are alternate editions. :)

There are many books/series that I'm mildly interested in but I have to be realistic and know that I'm never going to get to them. There are too many other books that I am truly excited to read so I can't spend precious reading time on the ones I'm not.

  2. No, I haven't read any of these books. Your reasons for skipping them are sound, though.

This is my Top Ten Tuesday post.

  3. I'm always going through my TBRs and taking things off the list! LOL I have not read any of these though.

    1. I try to weed out now and then so the TBR stay (somewhat) reasonable. Doesn't always happen, though. :)

  4. Great twist on this week's topic! I've never quite been able to bring myself to read Alexandra Bracken either - she seems lovely, but her books never grab me.

    1. Fantasy isn't really my genre, anyway, so I have to be truly excited about a book to make me pick up fantasy. And I guess The Darkest Minds just doesn't do it for me. :)

  5. This is a great idea, one that I should probably do myself. I really loved the KMM books back in the day but nowadays? I'd probably only read the MacKeltar books.

I DNF'd the Cora Carmack book listed and that entire series went off my TBR list as well. Welp.

    1. Sounds like I'm not missing much with Inspire since you DNF'd it!

  6. I've read Dark Lover (and most of the BDB) and enjoyed them but the later ones less so than the early ones. They used to be autobuys but now they're 'meh' maybes. :(

    1. I've heard that from several people, Nicci. That the first several books are great but then there are several beyond that that are just okay.

  7. The problem with Inspire is that the second book has been MIA for years. I liked it when I read it, but I would also like to know how it ends. Who's That Girl was cute. It had a bunch of moments, but it was not amazing. I liked it, but I think it's because I adored the love interest so much. I have my eye on Better Off Friends. It looks like something I would be down for.

    1. I'm not even sure how long it's been since Cora has released anything new. 2017 maybe? I know she's been dealing with health issues for a couple years and that's severely impacted her publishing schedule. But Inspire was from even before that it seems like. I wonder if there wasn't enough sales from Inspire to even make the second book a reasonable commodity? I really miss her Rusk University series. I've been waiting for All Closed Off for the two years and there's still no sign of it. :(

  8. Ooh I like this. Sayonara books! Sometimes you just gotta let go. :)

I have thought about The Darkest Minds a few times, especially when the movie came out and got me interested again...

    1. I know, I’ve wavered about The Darkest Minds for ages but the fact is I have so many books that I want to read way more than that one soooo... away it goes.

  9. The Greatest Minds was pretty good. That's the only one I've read off the list though. I haven't heard of any of the others. Heh.

    1. I know so many people that love The Darkest Minds series but at this point I just feel like too much time has passed. LOL Maybe if I’d jumped on it when it came out 6-7 years ago I would have loved it, too. Now? Just lost interest. *sigh*

  10. I have so many romance books that I need to kick off of my TBR! I went through the whole 50 Shades phase too and I got way out of hand!

    1. Yes! All the copycat books that came after Fifty Shades... too many ended up on my TBR and I’m just no longer interested.

  11. The Darkest Minds is the only book I've read on this list. I'd try to convince you to keep it on your TBR, but it's been so many years since I read it, and I don't know if I even love it as much as I once did. Every so often I scroll through my Goodreads TBR shelf, and remove a couple books that I just know, I'll never get too.

    1. I might have loved it if I read it back when it first came out (hard to believe that was 2012!!!) but over the years I’ve just lost interest. Happens too often! :(

  12. I haven't read any of those books, but maybe The Darkest Minds someday? I don't know.

But you never know, even if you kick a book off your TBR it doesn't mean it can NEVER come back. Even if it's not probable, LOL.

    1. Exactly! Just because I remove a book from the TBR doesn’t mean it drops off the face of the earth. LOL It’s still there should I ever change my mind. :)

  13. I haven't read any of these but I've heard good things about The Darkest Minds.

    1. I know The Darkest Minds has/had a huge fan base but I guess I was just never interested enough to pick it up. I think it’s time (for me) has come and gone. :)

  14. I have read Dark Lover and made it to maybe number 8 in the series than I had to bail. Too many books and just didn't hold my interest anymore.

    1. I’m hearing that from a lot of people, Grace. That the series just went on and on and they finally lost interest.

  15. I still want to read Alexander Bracken's series, but haven't not heard of any of the other ones it's safe to say they aren't taking up room on my TBR. LOL.

    1. LOL Well, glad that at least these aren’t cluttering up your TBR. :)

  16. I totally get why you kicked Black Dagger Brotherhood off, but if you're ever looking for light entertainment with entertaining names containing lots of "h"s and vampires, keep it in mind. Haha!

    1. It’s definitely still out there should I ever change my mind. I might even still have the first book on my bookshelf. Need to check that when I get home. :)

    1. Noooo! Don't tell me that, Sophie! LOL I'm trying desperately to lessen the TBR not add back to it. I refuse to add The Darkest Minds back to the list. *slinks off and starts to reconsider TDM*

  18. I read Not Without My Sister approximately a million years ago. (Probably when it first came out.) All I remember about it is that it’s poorly edited, so I agree with kicking it off.

  19. I haven't TBR purged in a loooong time! LOL! It does feel good to do it though. Series with a lot of books also throws me off reading them too.

    1. I try to purge the TBR on a (semi) regular basis. It's crazy what ends up on there and has me wondering "what was I thinking?" LOL

  20. I say good decision with Beyond the Highland Mist. The heroine was so completely frustrating I rated this one 2 stars. Dark Lover is really good and you wouldn't have to read any of the other books in the series if you didn't want to. They all are on different brothers and kind of wrap up. I recommend the first 4 books. I skipped around after that. The spin-off of the Black Dagger Brotherhood is really good, too.

I have no interest in Darkest Minds either, but it may be in my TBR. I should check and take it off if it is. I'll never read it.

    1. It's kind of crazy how often I hear that about the BDB series - the first 4 are good and then not so much. Sounds like I'm not missing much with Beyond the Highland Mist. An annoying heroine would have me wanting to toss the book across the room. LOL

  21. Good for you and your decisiveness. I loved The Darkest Minds but then never read the rest of the series for some reason. I keep saying I'll come back to it one of these days, but who knows?

    2. Sometimes I let so much time pass after the first in a series that even though I enjoyed it I just never continue.

  22. I have read and enjoyed the first five Black Dagger and enjoyed them. Not sure I will continue. I loved Darkest Mind and read the trilogy, but isn't there now a fourth? Not going back..lol

    1. Wow I hadn't even heard that the series was continuing. Seems like there's been a long gap between the last book and now.

  23. The only one I have read is The Darkest Minds but... eh, you're good hah. I agree with Kimberly above me, did there need to be a 4th? NOPE. And I am not here for it. I think it's good to kick stuff off your list every so often. Feels cathartic, and all Marie Kondo-y ;)

    1. Well the consensus seems to be I'm not missing much with The Darkest Minds. Good to know.

And I think you should trademark "Marie Kondo-y" immediately! You'll make millions! LOL

  24. I agree about some of these. After so long...It seems I just never get to them. I have Dark Lover and everyone keeps telling me to start the series and you will love it. I just might at that but sometimes thinking OMG - 17 already. I will be here forever and I don't think they are short 200-300 page books either so I don't know if I will start that series either.

    1. Committing to starting such a long series just isn’t something I really want to do. I have sooo many books that I already own and want to read. Keeping a crazy long series on the TBR just isn’t happening.

  25. Beyond the Highland Mist is one I'm still interested in but haven't picked up yet. Dark Lover was good but I stopped after book 3, it started to feel like the same story over and over. I hear that's an issue with that series so you probably aren't missing out on anything by dropping it.

    1. I feel like I hear the same thing A LOT about the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. About the first 3-4 books being good but then the series gets super monotonous.
