August #ShelfLove Challenge: Reading Rituals

August topic: What are your reading rituals? Do you have a reading nook? What snacks or drinks must you have handy? Share pictures and recipes!

A comfy chair is a must. Preferably one with a view of All The Books (or at least some of the books).

No food while eating (no sticky/greasy fingerprints on the pretties!) but a drink is always a good thing. A glass of sweet iced tea, a bottle of water, or (during the 9 days of winter Florida gets each year) hot chocolate hits the spot.

Of utmost importance: choosing the right bookmark to go with each book. This is completely arbitrary and cannot be explained. It's a special gift, people.

Have an adequate supply (i.e. stockpile) of page tabs at the ready. Enthusiastically tab every swoon-worthy line of dialogue, every dramatic scene, every moment that Cannot Be Forgotten.

Update GoodReads obsessively. As soon as I start the book, as I'm reading the book, as soon as I finish the book. Obviously everyone needs to be appraised constantly of my progress.

Do you have any reading rituals? Let's discuss!

  1. Oh I want a chair and shelves like that!! I like to sit on my couch where there isa side table for my drinks. I am awful and totally eat when I read. I have been known to stain pages with things like jelly. YIKES! I really can't think of other rituals besides loving to have my GR up to date with what I am reading. Great post!!

    1. Buying those chairs (we have two) was one of my best purchases ever. LOL Sooo comfortable and it instantly became my go-to reading spot. Jelly stains on the pages? Horrors! :)

  2. I LOVE your reading spot Tanya! We have a ton of cute reading areas in our house, but the only quiet space is my room (which is a bummer because I love our sitting room with the big windows). Joys of living at home still is trying to find some peace and quiet sometimes! LOL. Although I do love my window seat in my room! I can usually sit there for an hour or so and then my butt gets numb (things people dont tell you: window seats aren't as comfy for long term reading as they look! LOL).
I am guilty of eatting when reading! but i'm really careful when I do! and i love coffee and reading as well in the mornings if I get up early enough before I start my day!

    1. Thanks Emily! I should take a better pic of the room and share. It's actually a reading room and there are two other (smaller) bookshelves. I love the big white bookcase in this pic, though. It's a built-in unit that was custom made by my dad. Whenever we finally move from here it will be the thing I miss the most.

I love the sound of your window seat!! I always wanted one when I was younger and I had visions of pretty pillows and soft blankets... you've ruined my image of it with talk of it being uncomfortable. :)

    1. Thanks Gen! I looove my reading room. Sometimes I sit in there to color or just relax... just so I can be around my books. :) I've never been able to read on my bed well. I can't get in a comfortable reading position... plus, I fall asleep. LOL

    1. A fellow GoodReads addict - yes! With the page tabs, I've actually had authors at book events take the time to check and see what I tabbed. LOL Jennifer Armentrout did that with my Lux series books and commented on some of the stuff I tabbed. And another author (Krista and Becca Ritchie) actually took pics of my tabbed books and posted it on their IG account. So my books were famous. LOL

  6. Your reading corner is AMAZINNGGGG! I would like you to adopt me so I can move in and take over, mmmkay? Great ;) Seriously, jealous! Also, I am SO the same with bookmarks- I legit have one that I think is cursed because I always end up hating the book! Clearly, I don't use it anymore 😂 And YES to the sticky flags! I am so thankful that my first Secret Sister got me hooked on them- what on earth did I do before them!?

My reading ritual is as follows: After blogging, I go to bed, and eat hummus and watch TV (basically, The 100). Then, I read my Kindle book, then I read my physical book, and then I go to sleep. Flags and bookmarks are part of the process, but food is NOT- and beverages are only very, VERY carefully and away from ANY physical books! I am TERRIBLE at updating Goodreads though- I love to update my progress, but I never have anything to SAY hahah. Love this post!

    1. Thanks Shannon! Consider yourself adopted. Come on over and we'll read and play with books and watch The Hunger Games and eat yummy food. I'll be waiting... :)

LOL at your cursed bookmark! I would totally have to banish that one. Sticky flags are life!

Oooh, me likey your reading ritual. Except for the hummus. I'll switch to cheese and crackers. Or a Yoo Hoo. Cuz I'm fancy like that.

  7. I wish we only got 9 days of winter here....
Based on my massive book mark collection you'd think I'd do that too. But nah. Laziness wins every time.
    Nice looking reading nook!

So do you just grab whatever bookmark is near?

    2. Just a bit.
And they're calling for a terrible winter this year. Lots of snow. I'm gonna die.
Yup. Whatever is next to me. Or I see first.
