My Year in Reading - 2018

My reading in 2018 was a mixed bag, just like the year itself. There were periods of nonstop reading and times when it was almost non-existent, which directly correlates with what was going on in my life at the time. In May and June I needed the distraction and was reading constantly. In September I was bogged down with our move and my reading slowed to a snail's pace. I also read less in 2018 than I had in the last five years. And if it hadn't been for audiobooks, the number would have been even lower. I actually don't get all wrapped up in numbers and I never try to "beat" previous reading goals. I purposely low-balled my reading goal last year and did the same for this year. It'll be nice to reach the goal, whenever that happens, and whatever I read beyond that is just gravy. :) But enough chatter. Here's a look at my year in reading...

For the last couple years my longest books have been from Sarah J. Maas, as each book in the ACOTAR series released. She was unseated in 2018! :)

How is it that only 23 people have read Juniper Skies?! It hurts my heart that this is such an underrated contemporary YA series. If you love contemporary YA, please read Lora Richardson's Juniper trilogy. They're priceless.

Now here's an interesting little piece of data. The same book that is the "Least Popular" is also the Highest Rated (with a 4.68 average!). So obviously not many people read it, but those that did loved it. Now do you believe me when I say you need to read this book/series? :)

And now all the books that made up my year...

I actually now see a book that doesn't belong in the list. This Is Kind of an Epic Love Story was a DNF but I'm too lazy at the moment to go back and fix the graphic. ;)

How was your year in reading?
What was the least popular book you read? The longest? I'm curious!

    1. The Cruel Prince was one of my big surprises last year. I plan on starting The Wicked King next week so my fingers are crossed that it lives up to the hype!

  3. Looks like you read some pretty great books last year. That is interesting that the least read book is also the highest rated. That sounds like a book I need to check out! I set my Goodreads goal the highest I've ever set it for this year but I'm hoping it will still be easily achievable based on my reading habits of the past couple of years.

  4. 74 is still a lot of books! And I'm glad that your average rating seems to be good; hopefully that means you read lots of GOOD books.

    1. That little tidbit actually surprised me a lot. But I’m thrilled that the few who did read it apparently loved it. :)

  6. I also didn’t have the greatest reading year in 2018. I barely read at all last spring and had to scramble in December to hit my reading goal. I hope you have a great 2019 and read lots of good books.

  7. You have read some amazing books the past year. I think I did pretty good in 2018 and read 74 books. That is pretty good for me because of university. Here is to another great year!

    1. Too funny that we read the exact same number of books last year. :) I’m fine with that number. I don’t feel any pressure to read a certain amount. I’d much rather have quality over quantity. Hope we both have a great reading year this year!

  8. I hadn't heard of Juniper Skies, but I'll definitely go check it out now. I hate it when a fantastic book doesn't get enough attention! :-)

    1. The Juniper series by Lora Richardson is *SO* worthwhile. She and her books deserve so much more attention than they get. Contemporary YA with real emotional depth, tackling issues with being “issue books” and a dose of swoony romance. I love them.

  11. It's cool to see what everybody else read last year.

My shortest book was Life After Legend 2 (five pages), the longest was Queen of Air and Darkness at 880 pages. Least popular was George Whitefield: Evangelist for God and Empire, with 6 people reading. Average length was 375 pages.

    1. Wow, five pages is seriously short. :) And Cassandra Clare always seems to write some massive tomes. LOL

  14. I love this post! My longest books are often SJM also, but not this year! I hope 2019 is an even better reading year for you!

    1. Thanks Tracy! :) It's hard to beat SJM's books for sheer length. Cassandra Clare gives her a run for her money but I haven't read anything from her in a while, either.

  15. For me 2018 was a pretty non-existant year for me in terms of reading. Even though I met my GR goal of 60. Numbers aren't important to me anymore, it's all about the quality, right? I've been getting more and more into Manga and Graphic Novels now.

    1. I went the audio route for Burn For Me and unfortunately I didn't care for the narrator *at all.* It kind of turned me off the series. :( Maybe one day I'll try again but *not* with the audio. LOL
