Just answer three questions and share what you're reading.
I've been on the struggle bus this week and really need to turn it around. Mental health has taken a bit of a hit and I think the cure is to be more stringent about my routine. I've let that slip over the last couple weeks and it's time to get back to it. How are you doing?
I had to go into the office briefly yesterday and that was a welcome distraction. Interacting with the few people I actually saw (all three of them LOL) was a boost.
I think The Husband and I are going to go out at lunchtime today, grab some take-out, and eat in the car (or somewhere outside while distancing). Getting out of the house and having a little change of scenery sounds good. What's on your agenda today?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
Currently reading: I've been saying for probably two years that I wanted to read something by Devney Perry and it's finally happening. I was browsing for something new to read this morning and decided today was the day. I've thought for a long time that I would love Perry's books (based on what, I do not know), so hopefully I'll be proven right.
Current progress: 2%
Currently listening: I'm still listening to Cake and am nearing the end. I'm getting pretty concerned about what's going to happen. I need a happy ending, people! :)

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
DNF @ page 100 - Yesterday I finally called the ball and decided to DNF Own the Wind. At page 100 I realized that I could continue on and that was fine or I could quit it and that was fine, too. Not a rousing endorsement when you truly don't care what happens. LOL Not only was I just not invested in the story but I don't think Ashley's writing style is one that I gel with. She has a very distinctive way of writing dialogue and it felt odd and clunky. Here's just one example: "Goin' for a ride, thought, you didn't have to work, you might want to come with me." I'm sorry, but what in the fresh hell is that? I guess she is attempting to write dialogue in a more casual/conversational style, but it annoyed me to no end and constantly pulled me out of the story. I just couldn't take it.
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?
My reading has been super slow and I've been even pickier than usual about what I feel like reading. So who knows what's next. But Big Summer is still a possibility. And if I end up loving The Coppersmith Farmhouse (like I hope I will) the next book in the series, The Clover Chapel, could also happen.
What are you currently reading?
I wanna know! :)
I wanna know! :)
I have not ventured into Kristen Ashley's work, because the last few times I tried these super hyped, well loved romance authors, they didn't work for me. MC romances are not my thing either. I hope you and the hubs have a nice time enjoying the fresh air. Maybe a picnic on the beach (I am kidding. Are they nuts in Jax?) They are now requiring face covers at all times at my job. I feel so bad for my co-workers, who are there, and I dread going back to that. I hope you get your HEA for your audiobook.
ReplyDeleteOMG, can you believe that about the beaches? I was floored when the mayor did that last week. So ridiculous. And now the GA governor is reopening gyms and nail salons and hair salons... I mean, why is he thinking? These things are not essential! And the threat is still there. Gah!
DeleteYeah I think finding a new normal is key to surviving this mentally/emotionally! I think *fingers crossed* I'm finally getting into a good routine and it's helping. I take 2 walks daily too and that really helps - just getting out of the house. Sounds like you have a good plan for doing that today!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read Jennifer Weiner in years, I really should pick her up again. I loved her debut book, Good in Bed, as well as Little Earthquakes.
Have a great week!!
I'm so glad you're getting settled into a routine that works for you, Berls! My husband "forced" (LOL) me to go out with him this morning for a short walk and said we're taking another one in the afternoon. He's not going to let me get mired down in this. :)
DeleteJennifer Weiner's Mrs. Everything was one of my favorites last year so I'm excited for Big Summer.
I think it's important to get out and about sometimes, as long as you're being safe. Sounds like your plan for lunch is perfect.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear Kristen Ashley didn't work out. She does have a distinctive type of storytelling that doesn't work for some. I've read one Devney Perry and liked it. I keep saying I'll get back to her, but you know how it goes. Hope you enjoy it.
I agree, Rachel. I think I've been so laser-focused on staying at home that I've gone the extreme and barely poked my head out of the front door. Not good. Tie to get out and talk some walks.
DeleteI have such high hopes for the Devney Perry book!
I haven't heard of any of these, but they look like awesome reads. I hope you're enjoying them. Sorry Own the Wind wasn't a good one though. I can't handle that type of dialogue either and I'm pretty sure I got a headache just trying to read that one sentene.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading Follow Me and Conceal Don't Feel. Thought I haven't been in a reading mood the last few days so that hasn't changed in a week. Oops
Ash @ JennReneeRead
LOL Glad to know it's not just me, Ash. :) I couldn't take a whole of that dialogue. Conceal Don't Feel looks like such a fun retelling/twist!
DeleteI'm reading..checks...approximately 100 books at once and barely finishing any lol
ReplyDeleteI have two coming up for review in May so I need to get my brain into gear stat!
Karen @ For What It's Worth
LOL I want my reading mojo back, so bad.
DeleteMy work schedule became a bit more structured this week, so that routine has really helped with my mental health. It almost feels as normal as before, except for the part about working from home of course.
ReplyDeleteLOL It's funny how things do start to settle into a routine and begin to actually feel normal... but there's no getting past the fact that (for most of us) working from home just isn't normal.
DeleteI haven't been working for the past month, but I've been trying to keep up a routine (waking up at a normal hour, not staying up too late, etc.). I think it has been helping, but there are days when I don't want to do anything. On those days, I think it's a good idea to do something outside your routine! I hope your lunch date helped!
ReplyDeleteI think a routine is more important now than ever. Otherwise it's so easy to just fall into this pit of apathy and be a total sloth. :)
DeleteI hope the change of scenery helped a bit. I've been struggling a bit with my routine this week too. I'm blaming it on the weather. We had a little cold snap in the middle of what had been really nice spring weather, which made me want to hibernate instead of going outside.
ReplyDeleteThanks Suzanne, it really has. Getting out more has made a big difference. Hopefully your weather will bounce back and you'll feel more like getting out this week!
DeleteMy routine is getting better after last week of allergy issues. Have a great day an d enjoy your reading.
ReplyDeleteUgh, Allergies are the worst. They seem to be hitting everyone hard this year. My husband has never had allergy issues but it's even bothering him this year. Hope you're doing better this week, Cindy!
DeleteI'm really curious about Big Summer. Sorry about the DNF, but it sounds like a wise decision!! Sorry to hear your mental health has taken a bit of a hit. I hope you were able to get "out" for lunch and that getting into more of a routine helps out. I'm taking it day by day, but it's up and down sometimes for sure!! I get that.

Thanks Lauren, I appreciate that. I've made it a point to get out of the house more this week (talking walks, going for drives) and it's really made a difference. I have high hopes for Big Summer!
DeleteI hope you enjoy Perry's book! I haven't read that particular series yet.
ReplyDeleteHey Alison - I finished the Devney Perry book in the wee hours of last night/this morning and I really loved it! I already want to read more from her.
DeleteI need to give Devney Perry's book another try. I started it and for some reason it fell out of rotation a year ago):
ReplyDeleteI'm already loving the Devney Perry book, Lily. I'm at 24% and I don't want to put it down but I have to work. :)
DeleteCake better turn out good for you because I want to read it!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved Cake, Deanna! Hopefully I can get a review posted soon. :)
DeleteI picked up a couple of Kristen Ashley's books from this series from NetGalley and still have not read them. I hope I have been luck when I finally break down and start the series. I do think that getting out of the house helps. We walk the dogs at least once every day and I have been going into the office every afternoon. I hope you enjoyed your time out of the house today!
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy the series when you get to it, Carole. It just wasn't the right fit for me, unfortunately. I've made it a point to get out of the each day the last couple days and it's made a difference. :)
DeleteOh no! Not Own the Wind! :( Fair enough. Kristen Ashley's writing style is definitely something that takes getting used to. I think my first couple of reviews of hers commented A LOT about how she structured her writing and how people spoke, lol. In the end, I got used to it. I love the Chaos guys.
ReplyDeleteCake has a sequel! I have them both in a boxset... I dont know if that impacts on the ending or not but hopefully it doesn't and it ends well!
I know, I know... womp womp. Maybe I'll give it another try at some point but it just wasn't clicking with me at the time.
DeleteI was going to jump right into the next audiobook in the Cake series but decided to break it up a bit and read something in between. I'm excited to return to those characters, though!
I think we're all starting to feel a bit off with everything going on, I definitely find having some kind of routine helps but now I'm finding myself getting a little bored of it. I think a change of scenery is probably a good shout, I hope you did manage to go out for your lunch. I can totally see why you DNFed the Kristin Ashley book, I'd be frustrated at that dialogue because I'd need to read everything twice to make sure I knew what everyone was talking about. I hope whatever you picked up next was better.
ReplyDeleteI've been making a point to get out of the house more over the past several days and it has made such a difference. We go for a walk around the neighborhood, sometimes we just go for a drive and listen to the radio and talk. :) It's good to just get out. Yeah, I decided that Kristen Ashley just wasn't a good fit for me. But I gave it a try. :)
DeleteThese are challenging times so I completely understand how not having a routine/schedule is throwing you off. A lunch date with the hubs sounds great!
ReplyDeleteHe's been so awesome about lifting my spirits and getting me the heck out of the house. Lunch dates with Chipotle takeout, sitting in the car... drives around town for no reason... it's been good. :)
