Just answer three questions and share what you're reading.
The current stay-at-home order here in Florida expires tomorrow and, as of this morning, there's been no word from the governor on what happens next. Is he extending it? Is there even a plan beyond April 30th? Who knows. I wasn't overly impressed with him before the pandemic and even less so since. I wish we had a Gavin Newsom (CA) or an Andrew Cuomo (NY) instead of this clown. *sigh* What's the situation where you are? Has your area's stay-at-home order been extended?
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
Currently reading: I'm just over half through Sure Shot and there's nothing about it that I don't like. :) Sarina Bowen has a way of writing the most genuine, likable characters. They get me every time. In this case, it's Bess and Tank and they are so good together. Now if they would both just get out of their own way and accept that fact. LOL
Current progress: 56%
Currently listening: I'd totally forgotten that I fairly recently tried another audiobook by A.L. Jackson (Catch Me When I Fall) and DNF'd it quickly. Alison reminded me of that and it instantly made sense of the issues I have with this current one. Suffice it to say, Jackson has a distinct writing style (read: so overly dramatic) and it does not work for me. But, seeing as I'm three-quarters through this one, I'm seeing it through till the bitter end. Heaven help me.
Current progress: 77%
WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
What I read: I'd been meaning to/wanting to read something by Devney Perry for at least two years. Now it's finally happened and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long! The Coppersmith Farmhouse was just such a "me" story. I fell right into the story from the very beginning, pulled for the characters even as I recognized their flaws, and loved Perry's writing. I even recommended it to my mother a few days ago. It's more graphic than she likes but I think the story will make up for it. :)
What I listened to: Cake was another hit. It's been sitting in my Audible app for ages and, on a whim, I finally decided to listen to it. I'm so glad I did because I seriously loved it. It got dark in places (Jake's back story was utterly horrific and hard to take in) but, oh my goodness, I was so completely invested in this one. And even though the series continues on with different characters, I will definitely be all over the next books (fingers crossed there will be glimpses of Jake and Casey in those books). Hopefully I'll get reviews posted for both of these very soon.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?
I need to get moving on Big Summer since it releases in just a couple weeks.
What are you currently reading?
I wanna know! :)
I wanna know! :)
I'm in Washington state and our Gov has been doing great. He has aligned us with CA, OR, CO, and NV to ensure we roll out of this with a plan. We aren't supposed to be out of our stay at home until May 4th, but I feel an extension coming on.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about Sure Shot. I read A Stone in the Sea a while back and never read the rest of the series. I guess I didn't love it. I finally read Cake and really liked it. I am reading the second book right now.
I need to get back to the Cake series. I loved the first book *so* much.
DeleteI am so thankful for my governor and mayor right now. We're extended until May 30 which is necessary. Some idiot in southern Illinois sued to be exempt though so I'm hoping that doesn't catch on with some of the red counties. I hope you and your family stay safe and healthy!
ReplyDeleteSounds like your governor/mayor are being cautious and reasonable. Thank goodness for that!
DeleteOur state (Texas) is set to begin a phased opening on Friday. So far, many major business's a companies have said they are going to wait for a while. Things like salons and bars are still closed for now. For some reason, though, my county has decided everything can open up and proceed as it was before!
ReplyDeleteThankfully my company is keeping us working from home for time being. We may go back by the end of May if we are lucky. I'm happy to stay isolated for now.
Hair and nail salons opened here a week or two ago... and then gyms not long after. I get that people need to work but those sure don't seem necessary to me.
DeleteHere everything is postponed till May 11th. From then schools are starting again, but nothing more. Sigh..
ReplyDeleteCake looks so good! I definitely like to read that one. I'm currently reading Unforgetable by Melanie Harlow.
Melanie Harlow is an author I've been meaning to read for ages!
DeleteWe are still under stay-at-home orders, and our governor has said a few more weeks, although we're hopeful that state parks will be opening up this weekend!
ReplyDeleteI hope the parks are for you. Seems like it would be easy to keep your distance there.
DeleteStay at home orders are only good if the people follow them. I get a NY paper, it's a hot mess there, and the beaches are packed in CA. I don't know how much any of that matters, if people aren't following orders. I am so happy to see everyone is enjoying Sure Shot, because I pre-ordered it, which means I will read it some time next year - HA!
ReplyDeleteI hope you'll love Sure Shot... whenever you get around to it. :)
DeleteOurs is extended until May 18th. I hope that you will enjoy Big Summer!
ReplyDeleteThanks... Big Summer was a good one!
DeleteOur stay at home order goes through June 10th as of right now. A few things, like non emergency dental visits, will resume with social distancing, as of next week, but our daily new cases of COVID-19 haven't really started to go down much at all so no clue what the future holds. I hope you enjoy Big Summer. I just started Beach Read and am hoping to tackle Big Summer soon after that one.
ReplyDeleteI thought Big Summer was a lot of fun. I loved the main character.
DeleteOur stay at home orders expire May 15th so we'll see what happens. I'm in California so I got lucky on the Governor front! Thank goodness! I do wish they'd open the hiking trails and day use parks, though. People can usually stay apart in those types of areas. It probably won't be too long.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to hear Devney Perry worked out. I'll have to read more of her books. I'm not a fan of overly dramatic at all, and I've read some of Jackson's books and gave up.
I can't to read more from Devney Perry. I really loved the first one I read.
DeleteThe stay at home order for my state (MO) ends this weekend but I live in St. Louis County and the stay at home order there has been extended indefinitely with no end date given. It seems like more and more people are just going about their lives to me. I plan to stay home as much as I possibly can.
ReplyDeleteI plan to start Sure Shot next and I cannot wait.
Sure Shot was such a good one!
DeleteI'm in Kentucky and we don't have an official Stay at Home order (though Ohio does) but I'm not sure what the plan is for things in May. I know some things are allowed to sort of open up - like hair salons, but near the end of May. I really love our governor though, so thank goodness for that!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about Big Summer. I hope it's a good one!

For some reason I thought you lived in Ohio, Lauren. Oops! :)
DeleteWowww nothing like waiting until the last minute. Your guy sounds like a real gem. Mine (PA) is somewhere in the middle. He's definitely no Cuomo, but he's better than a lot of the others. He's clearly worried about what the red areas think of him, which is absurd- like they never liked you and they never will, who cares, move on- and is being too lenient, IMO. Our order is until May 8th, but he's in some kind of Northeastern coalition so hopefully he'll just listen to those guys. My boss just sent a text about our county in particular not reopening until July (we're REALLY bad- 3rd highest in the state and not even CLOSE to 3rd largest population) so who the heck knows. I hope you get some answers soon, and that you are able to stay safely at home ♥♥
ReplyDeleteGlad that most of your current/recent reads have been great! The one you're listening to does NOT sound fun, but at least the others are! And you're almost done! I am finishing up Unreconciled (it;s the 4th in a VERY dark, brutal, and heavy sci-fi series, definitely not your jam hah) but I just finished My Lady Jane which was adorable, and I think I am starting Breath Like Water which is probably more your kind of thing, so fingers crossed!
Yeah, Unreconciled doesn't sound like my thing. LOL But I've seen so many raves for the My Lady Jane series!
DeleteMy state (Utah) is slowly lifting it. We weren't ever on complete lockdown like some other states. But our safety measures we implemented has received praise but our Governor wouldn't do certain things because it went against the constitution. I do think we can still have our rights, be safe and take the right precautions and be responsible. Just my view though lol Hope safety measures are taken as we open our country up again.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you are loving Sarina Bowen's book so much here. I just love her writing style and especially with what she has done with this hockey series.
I hope most states/people will be smart and safe about things as they slowly reopen. I'd hate to see things move too fast and then infections spike again. Better to be smart about it now.
DeleteSarina Bowen is one of my absolute favorites. Love her! :) And Sure Shot was so great. ♥
I'm in California, like Rachel and am lucky on the governor front. I agree with Sam on the fact that orders are only as good as how many people will follow them though. I feel like people were more worried initially, and now everyone isn't sheltering as much.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your enjoying Sure Shot! It sounds like a wonderful read!
Lindy@ A Bookish Escape
I agree, Lindy. It seems like more and more people are out and about and just "in public" more. Most things are still closed but if I happen to pass a store like Target or Home Depot, the parking lots are absolutely packed. I don't know... people seem less concerned now or something.
DeleteHere in Nevada we're on a Stay at Home until May 15th and then there's talk of taking us to Phase 1. But we'll see what really ends up happening since they keep pushing out our date since we're so closely tied to California. I'm currently reading Pestilence by Laura Thalassa for a buddy read....why I went along with reading a book about the apocalypse from a pandemic is beyond me lol! But it is beyond addicting ♥.
ReplyDeleteJen @ Star-Crossed Book Blog
Sounds like your state is being safe and cautious, Jen. That's good.
DeleteI see so many raves for that Laura Thalassa series! It seems so unlike anything I normally read but I'm super interested in it. Can't wait to see your thoughts on it!
I loved The Coppersmith farmhouse too Tanya! I have read several of her books but I stopped at one point because of something personal.
ReplyDeleteSorry you had to stop the series, Sophie. I recommended the first book to my mom and she's now three books in! :)
DeleteSorry you've had so much uncertainty about what comes next, if it continues or what. I think that's worse, just give everyone a plan. I'm hoping we'll get some plan for how our lockdown will end next week. I don't think it's over but I'll happily have some restrictions eased. Glad you're enjoying Sure Shot, I always enjoy Sarina Bowen's books and I don't know why haven't read more of them recently.
ReplyDeleteRight! I can handle whatever but just tell me what the plan is.
DeleteSarina Bowen is always a sure thing for me. Love her! :)
Our lockdown is to be reviewed by the 7th May. Who knows what they'll do next but I suspect they'll be announcing plans to slowly start reopening things... :/
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you loved Cake! I need to read that at some point. Perry and Bowen are also high on my "need to read" list... I think I have that AL Jackson book on my kindle too. I'm not sure I'll appreciate the dramatics! But since it's been on the kindle for years, it'll probably stay there for a few more years! I hope it ended well? Did you get any enjoyment out of it? lol
So your lockdown should have been reviewed by now, Nicci. Hopefully they're taking things slow and not rushing to reopen.
DeleteThe A.L. Jackson book... well, I didn't DNF it so I guess that's saying something. But it ended on a big cliffhanger and I'm not going to continue the series. So there's that. LOL
I had not so long ago mentioned to either you or Deanna that I was curious about Cake having heard both of y'all mention it. Well, I check it out on goodreads and...I've already read it. LOL! I gave it 4.5 Stars, so I apparently enjoyed it. But, it's been 4 years since I've read it, and I can't at all remember it. I'll have to give it a reread at some point. Sorry you still aren't enjoying AL Jackson!! She does have that unique style. I don't mind it in some of her books, but not so much in others. I loved Stone in the Sea, but it's been a long time since I've read it. I couldn't say how I'd feel about it now.
ReplyDeleteHa! Too funny that you've already read it. Nice to know you loved it. LOL
DeleteYeah, me and A.L. Jackson... just not a good fit. OMG, the drama! Haha.
