Brooke Parker never expected to find herself in the tiny town of Juniper Falls, Minnesota. Of course, she also never expected to lose her dad. Or for her mom to lose herself. Brooke feels like she’s losing it…until she finds Juniper Falls hockey. Juniper Falls girls’ hockey, that is.

Jake Hammond, current prince of Juniper Falls, captain of the hockey team, and player with the best chance of scoring it big, is on top of the world. Until one hazing ritual gone wrong lands him injured, sitting on the sidelines, and―shocking even to him―finding himself enjoying his “punishment” as assistant coach for the girls’ team.

As Jake and Brooke grow closer, he finds the quiet new girl is hiding a persona full of life, ideas, and experiences bigger and broader than anything he’s ever known. But to Jake, hockey’s never just been a game. It’s his whole life. And leveraging the game for a shot at their future might be more than he can give.

Brooke’s life has fallen apart and she’s been uprooted from Texas to her grandmother’s home in Juniper Falls. Her mother is a shell of the person she used to be and Brooke feels totally on her own in this hockey-obsessed town. When she witnesses a hazing ritual that goes too far, she has local hockey star Jake Hammond seeking her out asking for her silence. Joining the new girl’s hockey team means she’s seeing a lot more of Jake and her determination to keep her head down and just get by doesn’t seem to be working.

Jake’s life has always centered around hockey and now, as a senior and captain of the team, his future seems set and everything he’s worked for is just within reach. All of that is in jeopardy when a freshman teammate is hospitalized, and all fingers are pointing to Jake. With mounting pressure from his father and his coach, Jake starts to question the "win at all cost" mentality of those around him and must choose between doing what’s right or doing what’s expected of him.

I thoroughly enjoyed Cross’s previous two entries in the Juniper Falls series. Her characters are usually well-developed and dealing with real life issues that are relatable. Plus, there’s plenty of swoony romance. In On Thin Ice there is a heavy focus on school athletics and the toxic environment that can develop when those in charge lose sight of the individual players and winning is the only goal. This often meant Jake was the linchpin at the expense of the development of Brooke’s character. Her background remained largely a blank slate and issues with her mother were glossed over.  Even so, I was invested in Jake’s situation found myself wanting to give him gentle nudges to do the right thing. And while it seemed most of the adults and authority figures in his life had questionable ethics, I loved that his uncle Oz, also the town sheriff, was a steady force and was unwavering in his determination to make things right.

While this is the third in a series of companion novels, readers won’t have a problem if this is their first visit to Juniper Falls. There’s enough exposition to fill in the blanks. Those who have enjoyed the previous books will appreciate revisiting characters they already know – Haley, Fletcher, Claire and Tate are all there (and here’s a big cheer for Mike Steller’s role!) – and catch up with the latest in this small town. My hope is that Cross continues this series because I’m still wanting more of this cast of characters I’ve come to know and love.

Valentine's Book Tag (2019)

I was searching for a fun tag to do for Valentine's and came across this one.
I'm not sure of the original creator but I found it here.

standalone book you love

A standalone? What is this strange thing you speak of? Do authors still write standalones? I guess I do still read some of those rare breeds and to be all extra I'll even choose one with "love" in the title. Who Do You Love spanned several years and followed two people who I loved and pulled for.

dystopian book you love

I don't talk about this book enough but I seriously loved it. It was one of my favorites last year and received my oh-so-rare five star rating (which is so rare that it's like a rainbow-colored unicorn with sprinkles). This dystopian/post-apocalyptic tale from Jessica Redmerski had me utterly captivated.

a book you love but no one else talks about

I'm going to use this opportunity to sing the praises of a YA contemporary book/trilogy that deserves so much more love and attention. Lora Richardson is just wonderful and she filled this book with everything I love about contemporary YA.

favorite book couple

I literally just did a Top Ten Tuesday post on my favorite couples. Am I supposed to magically come up with another couple just two days later? Yes? Okay then, I'll go with Ridge and Sydney. I adored these two and felt like my heart hurt right along with theirs as they found their way together.

a book other people love but you haven't read yet

How is it that I haven't read this? I mean, seriously, what am I doing with my life?

a book with red on the cover

Sure, plenty of things in this one had me rolling my eyes, and America has to be the most annoying character ever, but I still had fun being Team Maxon.

a book with pink on the cover

I read this one back in December and oh my goodness did it ever leave my heart bruised and battered. I mean, just the synopsis had me feeling all weepy, so you can imagine what actually reading it did to me. But it was also super hopeful and left me with a smile on my face.

you're given a box of chocolates.
which fictional boyfriend gives them to you?

First of all, do I even need to answer this one? Do we all not know that my heart belongs to Daemon Black? If not, are you new here?? Secondly, any worthy book boyfriend would know that I don't even particularly like chocolate (yeah, yeah, it's true, now let's move along). But I wouldn't turn down a cookie from Daemon...

you're single on valentine's day.
what book would you read?
what tv show would you watch?
what movie would you watch?

First, I'm curious why I'm single. Where did my husband go? Is he trapped under something heavy? Is he away on a secret mission? I'm a bit concerned but for the sake of the tag...
Book: I'll reread Wait For You because Cam + Avery always give me all the feels.
TV: Meh. I don't watch TV so moving on...
Movie: Love Actually. Nevermind that it's set at Christmastime. Minor details. It's funny and swoony and makes me happy.

you're in a bookstore when you get shot by cupid's arrow. what new release will you love?

It'll break my heart... but I'll love it.

no matter how you spend the day...
 happy valentine's day!

WWW Wednesday #40 | February 13, 2019

Just answer three questions and share what you're reading.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
Wild Country (World of The Others #2, The Others #7)
by Anne Bishop
I am crazy excited to be back in the world of The Others! It still surprises me how into this series I am. I'm pretty much a straight-up contemporary romance kind of girl, but when I gave the first book (Written in Red) a try a couple years ago I. Was. Hooked. This latest entry actually overlaps in timeline with Etched in Bone so fans of the series will see plenty of familiar faces. I'm about 25% in and keep getting annoyed when real life forces me to put the book down. :)

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
Leah on the Offbeat - Becky Albertalli
I finished Leah over the weekend and... *huge dramatic sigh* It's not exactly what I was expecting, nor exactly what I wanted. I will say that I was living for all the Simon+Blue scenes and they are just as precious as ever. Otherwise, I have feelings... and hopefully I'll get my review posted soon.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

There are so many things I want to jump into next and I don't know which one it will be. I really do want to get to Watching You (I know, I know, I've been saying that for weeks) and I also have an arc of a YA contemporary that I'm excited about (no cover for it yet). Lora Richardson is an amazing self-published author and I've raved about her Juniper Limits trilogy often. Her work deserves so much more attention than it gets. She just sent me an arc of her latest, Vanishing Summer, so that might be what I pick up next. And yet another option is an arc of I Want You Back by Lorelei James. I've never read anything by her before, but this one really caught my eye.

What are you currently reading?
I wanna know! :)

Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Couples

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic:
Favorite Couples

The prompt doesn't specify what kind of couples but since it's Valentine's week I'm going out on a limb and assuming it's romantic couples. Plus, those are my favorite kinds of couples so doesn't that work out nicely? :)

Tatiana & Alexander
Paullina Simons

Whether it's favorite couples, favorite love stories, or just favorite books, The Bronze Horseman can top most any list for me. The love story between Tatiana and Alexander was epic and the challenges they overcame strengthened their bond. They are simply unforgettable.

Anna & T.J.
On the Island
Tracey Garvis Graves

It's been 6+ years since I read On the Island but I still remember the feeling of being utterly captivated by the relationship between Anna and T.J. While their relationship was forged under extreme circumstances, it was still the real thing. This was one of the rare instances where I found myself thinking about the characters long, long after I finished the book.

Lily & Loren
Krista & Becca Ritchie

A relationship between an alcoholic and a sex addict sounds like a recipe for disaster but these two beat the odds. Despite setbacks and struggles they made it work. Lily's innate sweetness and Lo's utter devotion to Lily makes them one of my favorite fictional couples.

Simon & Blue
Becky Albertalli

Does it get any cuter than these two? From their first tentative emails to their eventual face-to-face meeting, I loved every minute of their relationship. I just want to hug these precious cinnamon rolls.

Cam & Avery
Jennifer L. Armentrout

I could have chosen any of a number of couples from Jennifer Armentrout, but Cam and Avery stand out above the rest. I loved the way they had a strong friendship that developed first and when it turned romantic it was deep and lasting. It doesn't hurt that Cam is possibly the Best Book Boyfriend Ever.

Sarah J. Maas

Y'all know I don't read a lot of fantasy, but if we're talking favorite couples there's no way I could leave off Feyre and Rhysand. These two didn't have an easy road but they sacrificed for one another, made impossible choices, and were true partners. They truly wanted each other to shine.

Jamie & Wes
Him and Us
Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy

Cue the swoons, the heart eyes, and the racing pulse. I have so much love for these guys that it's ridiculous. You'd think they were real people that I knew and adored. I've lost count of how many times I've read their story and, while they're falling for each other, I'm falling for them - every single time. These two guys are so right together. Their friendship, their banter, their (smoking hot) chemistry, their devotion... they have it all.

Noah & Georgie
Sarah Darlington

Kill Devil Hills is one of those quiet little gems that someone went unnoticed and yet deserves much more attention. Noah and Georgie were both so completely likable and found exactly what they needed in each other. I loved that they made such a positive impact on each other's lives.

Archer & Bree
Mia Sheridan

Archer and Bree are the most recent addition to my favorite couples list. These are two of the kindest, gentlest souls and there was never any doubt they belonged together. Their friendship-turned- relationship was so genuine and based on total acceptance. It was impossible not to be completely taken in by their love.

Lily & Atlas
It Ends With Us
Colleen Hoover

Atlas and Lily's romance does not follow conventions. There were bumps along the way, horrible circumstances, separation... but despite all that, the love was still there. I think the fact that their bond started during such a tumultuous time for them both (plus they were just teenagers at the time) gave me an even greater desire to see them overcome the odds.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Eleanor & Park | Stella & Michael | Tanner & Sebastian | Anne & Mal

Have you read any of these books?
Do you have a favorite fictional couple?

The Sunday Post #141

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's a chance to share news - a post to recap the past week on your blog,
showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is
coming up on your blog in the week ahead. You can find the info here:

According to the local news, my city was the warmest location in the country on Friday, with temps topping 80 degrees. Um, yay? What happened to winter? It was about 20 degrees cooler  yesterday but still... I have been robbed of winter this year and I demand a do-over.

Last week I had a guest post at Sophie's Beware of the Reader and this week I was featured at JennReneeRead by Jenn and Ash. My tiny little blog is feeling all kinds of plugged in to the book blogger community lately. :) Anyway, if you're just dying to know more about me (LOL) head on over to Jenn and Ash's blog and show them some love.

Question for those of you who use the Blogger platform: You know how at the bottom of a post it has that "You Might Also Like" feature and it shows three other posts? Is there any way to customize the graphic/pic that shows? For reviews, it always seems to pull my GoodReads button instead of the book cover. I know the obvious answer is to ditch the GR button but I don't wanna. Any thoughts on how to make the book cover show up... or is that even possible?

How's your weekend? Doing anything fun?

WHAT I READ IN THE LAST WEEK:

Despite having a really over-the-top event at the end that the story just didn't need, I still loved this one. Cherry did an amazing job at creating characters that I cared about and my heart broke about a hundred times while reading this one. And it had a great epilogue which always makes me happy.

So, I typically skip this one when I re-listen to the series but I decided to give it another go this year to refresh my memory on some secondary plot lines. Yeah, I still can't stand Salem. Ha! (Funny side note: The Husband listens to whatever audio book I have going whenever he's in my car, so he's heard the Marked Men series a few times. A few days ago he happened to see the cover for this one on the blog and immediately said, "Oh no, that's not Rowdy." LOL I find it hilarious that he's so familiar with the characters that he even knows what they look like. :)

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING:

While I am absolutely living for all the Simon + Bram rep in this book (I swear, that promposal was everything), I have to say that overall I'm not thrilled with the direction this is taking.

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY LISTENING TO:

I read this one back in 2017 and it basically floored me. I fell in love with it and found it impossible to write a review. (Typical when I truly love a book. I am utterly paralyzed when it comes to expressing my feelings in the way I want.) This year I'm trying to go through my books on GoodReads and get those reviews written. (It's nice to have a dream.) Since it's been almost two years, I'm doing a reread but on audio this time. Maybe this time I'll be able to put something into words instead of just, "Gah! I love this!"

PHYSICAL BOOKS:

I didn't even know this one was out in paperback until I saw it while roaming through Books-A-Million yesterday.

KINDLE BOOKS:

I've been meaning to read this series for a long time and already own the first two books. Almost the whole series was put on sale this week for 99¢ each so I picked up Souls Unfractured, Deep Redemption, Damnable Grace, and Crux Untamed

eARCS FOR REVIEW:

I rarely check Edelweiss or NetGalley anymore, but the one day I decided to check in at Edelweiss there was The Bride Test available for download - no request needed. Say what?!?! Yeah, I jumped all over that. And somehow NetGalley and Gallery Books got me confused with some other blogger who isn't a speck in the book world and actually approved my request for The UnHoneymooners. I repeat: say what?!?! I'm not questioning it... I just downloaded my books and ran away fast before anyone realized their mistake. :)

How was your week? Any new books? Any news to share?
I'd love to hear about it!
