WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

The Unhoneymooners - Christina Lauren
I'm at the 92% mark and had to stop reading this morning in order to make it to the office on time. Gah! Adulting sometimes sucks. LOL You better believe I'll be plowing through the last couple chapters during lunch. I need closure! This one has felt a little different from the last few I've read by CLo and I can't even pinpoint exactly how, but it's so, so good and in between all the laughs it has hit on some real-life topics.

What is it with the Emma Chase covers being all about the abs? A couple weeks ago it was Getting Schooled (such a cringe-worthy cover... ugh) and now this one. Anyway, I'm listening to the audio of Tangled and it's interesting how it's 100% from Drew's POV. I'm trying to remember if I've ever read a romance that was solely from the male POV. The narration is by Sebastian York so that's an automatic win and I'm really enjoying seeing the changes in Drew.

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

Flesh (Flesh #1) & Skin (Flesh #2) - Kylie Scott
I listened to this duet on audio and, while I can admit that it was mostly ridiculous, it was also plenty entertaining. A zombie apocalypse + romance. I mean, how can you go wrong? LOL The first book was much better, with an actual plot that I was invested in, but the second was kind of repetitive with a TSTL (too stupid to live) female lead. I probably won't even review these on the blog - I mean, they were just fun brain candy listens - but I might share a few thoughts on GoodReads.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

I'm not even sure what's up next. I'm already kind of planning what I want to read on vacation and that's only a week and a half away so I don't want to dive into anything chunky or weighty right now. I need to keep it simple so I can morph right into vacay reads as soon as I hit the pool. LOL Sooo, for now I'm going to stick with the ones I mentioned last week. I can't figure out what I'm in the mood for so it's anyone's guess. :)

Top Ten Tuesday: Rainy Day Reads

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic:
Rainy Day Reads

This week's topic is pretty subjective and I'm interested to see what others consider a rainy day read. For me, it's basically the antithesis of a beach read. The opposite of light and fluffy. Something that is angsty or dramatic - or just a story that is so immersive and compelling you don't want to put it down. Here are ten that fit that bill for me:

What do you consider a rainy day read?

The Sunday Post #150

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's a chance to share news - a post to recap the past week on your blog,
showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is
coming up on your blog in the week ahead. You can find the info here:

  • There's been a lot going on this week both at home and at the office and it made for some busy days.
  • Our last class in the beginners yoga series was Thursday and I was sad to see it come to an end. But I'm looking forward to stepping into a "regular" class, maybe on the weekend instead of a weeknight.
  • Had appointments for The Husband and I yesterday for our yearly eye exams and new glasses/contact lenses. Cha-ching! Thank goodness for those FSA accounts. :)
  • I pre-ordered three books this week and am so excited for them all. The Bride Test - because I loved it so much and want a physical copy, The Unhoneymooners - because it's Christina Lauren and that cover (!!), and Red, White & Royal Blue because I'm crazy-excited to read it.

And now for your listening/viewing pleasure... :)

I think I've managed five posts per week for the previous two weeks but I also said in my last Sunday Post that it wouldn't be happening a third week in a row. LOL I knew it was going to be a busy week so I'm surprised I even managed two posts this week.

Short Take Reviews:
Getting Schooled by Emma Chase & Gentleman Sinner by Jodi Ellen Malpas

WHAT I READ IN THE LAST WEEK:
WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING:

The Unhoneymooners - Christina Lauren
I'm only about 20% in but there have been so many laugh out loud lines/moments in this one already. I'm curious to learn more about Ethan... and I already want a book about Olive's cousin Diego. :)

PHYSICAL BOOKS:

I read an arc of this last year and it was such a surprise hit. The hardcover was under $10 on Amazon and who can pass that up?

I am so excited to read this one! Last year I pre-ordered the paperback of The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros - partly because it sounded fabulous and partly because pre-orders came with a bonus book co-written by Rebecca and Jay! There were some delays with the printing so I finally received it yesterday and it's a beauty!

KINDLE BOOKS:

I've been meaning to read this one and when it dropped to 99¢ I nabbed it.

eARCS FOR REVIEW:

Grabbing a new release from K.A. Tucker is a no-brainer. And when it involves a second-chance romance, I'm even more excited.

How was your week? Any new books? Any news to share?
I'd love to hear about it!

Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out.
The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and "cool" teacher in the hometown where he's not just a golden boy—he's platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle.

Then...Callie Carpenter comes home.
And knocks him right on his tight end zone.

Callie has a pretty sweet life herself...on the other side of the country. But circumstances—that she'd prefer to never speak of again—have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school.

Now she's facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore...and that's just the teachers.

When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance—and then has to stop herself from jumping him.

Good friends are all they can ever be.
Or...these teachers just might end up getting schooled—hard—by love.

Sometimes I want a romance without all the drama and all the angst. And that’s what Emma Chase delivers.  Garrett and Callie were the real deal in high school – young but very much in love. Circumstances had them parting ways while attending college across the country from one another, but when Callie returned home to help care for her parents it was obvious from the start that all the old feelings were still there. I loved so many aspects of this story: Callie and Garrett were incredibly likable, the humor was so on point that I was literally laughing out loud, the second-chance romance aspect was spot-on, and I loved the way both Garrett and Callie were so committed to their teaching careers and their students. There were a few unexpected emotional moments that were woven into the story perfectly but for the most part this was 100% feel-good romance.

Izzy White knows of the darkness in this world. After all, she escaped it long ago. Determined not to let her past beat her, Izzy has a secure, stable life with a job she loves in nursing. But one act of kindness will completely upend everything she's so carefully built-putting her right back in the crosshairs of danger she's been so desperate to avoid.

When Theo Kane shows up like a knight in shining armor, Izzy can't help thinking she's been saved from one threat and exposed to another. His imposing physique, the harsh lines of his face, and the wariness of everyone who comes close are just a few clues to Theo Kane's notorious reputation. The man is positively terrifying. But with Izzy, he's tender and a complete gentleman, and her fascination with the mysterious beast of a man becomes too powerful for her to walk away.

As Theo's demons come to light, running becomes even more impossible. And yet staying together could doom them both.

This was one of those okay reads that was entertaining enough while I was reading it but ultimately not anything particularly new or memorable. Theo saves Izzy from an attack and then proceeds to hardcore pursue her. An intense relationship develops but Izzy has a past she won’t reveal and Theo has secrets he won’t discuss. Oooh, drama! Then there are all the Fifty Shades similarities. Theo is a damaged anti-hero that cannot stand to be touched, he’s uber-rich and has a driver/bodyguard, he’s all stalkery and even showed up at Izzy’s girls getaway (from London to Las Vegas) to keep tabs on her after only knowing her for a matter of days, the relationship got intense quickly, etcetera, etcetera. Even so, the over the top drama kept the story moving and the craziness was entertaining. All in all, it felt like a story that’s been told many times before so I’m not sure I’ll be picking up more from Malpas.

HAVE YOU READ EITHER OF THESE BOOKS?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

The Unhoneymooners - Christina Lauren
I actually haven't cracked the cover yet but I'll be starting this one tonight. I'm dying to dive right in but my entire day is full with work and then an appointment so it'll have to wait until this evening. Gah!
This is a combination post-apocalyptic/zombie/romance and really what more can I say? LOL I'm about 80% through the audiobook and even though it's kind of ridiculous it's also totally entertaining. The two guys are full-on caveman alpha protective which induces much eye-rolling but, like I said... also entertaining.

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

My Favorite Half-Night Stand - Christina Lauren
While I was reading My Favorite Half-Night Stand I made an off-hand comment that I wasn't loving it quite as much as previous CLo books and that seemed to prompt a bunch of comments bemoaning the fact that I disliked it. I was like, huh?? I never said that! LOL So to clarify: I really did enjoy Half-Night Stand! No, it wasn't my favorite by Christina Lauren but it was still a good read!
Ask me to pick a favorite between The Kiss Quotient and The Bride Test and I'll tell you that it's impossible! Loved this one! I read it lightning fast (for me) and by yesterday I could hardly stop reading. I think I read the entire second half of the book yesterday. I loved Esme, I loved Khai... yes, there were times I wished they had talked more and given explanations for what they were saying and doing (it would have helped alleviate some misunderstandings) but even so... ♥♥♥.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

Oh boy, I'm not even sure. No telling what I'll be in the mood for after The Unhoneymooners but these three are definite possibilities.
