Top Ten Tuesday: Unforgettable Characters

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic:
Unforgettable Characters

This week's topic is a character freebie and I'm going with those characters who, for me, are unforgettable. It's not always easy - or even possible - to articulate what makes a character unforgettable. Maybe it's because they were heroic, maybe it's that they elicited an emotional response from me. Maybe because I recognized something of myself (or someone I know) in them, or that they felt larger than life in some way. But more often than not, it's completely undefinable. Just a connection that I feel or some other aspect that makes a character stay with me long after I turn the last page.

REV FLETCHER                       JULIAN HARLOW                     SKYLAR EVANS

EVELYN HUGO                               MICHAEL TOLLIVER

MILES ARCHER                                 GAVRIEL

WAVY QUINN                          JEMIMA JONES                      STU REDMAN

What character do you consider unforgettable?

  1. Great list and choice of topic for today's character freebie! There are so many books on this list that I want to read and I have a feeling that once I do, these characters will become unforgettable for me too! I know Evelyn Hugo is one that I'll never forget--that's one of my fave reads this year!

    1. Evelyn was definitely unforgettable. Taylor Jenkins wrote a remarkable character when she wrote Evelyn!

  2. Many of my unforgettable characters are from John Green books. And all of Jane Austen's female protagonists. What about Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird? She's probably the top of my list. My TTT Characters list

    1. Elizabeth Bennett would be a good one. And Scout actually made my long list before I started to cull it down to just ten picks. There are so many to chose from! :)

  3. I've only read I'll Meet You There from your list but I'll agree with your choice of Skyler.

  4. I've read some of these and truly enjoyed them. I don't remember anyone being unreliable in Ugly Love though. Maybe it's just me.

    1. No unreliable characters... I was going with *unforgettable* characters. And, for me, all of these fit the bill. :)

  5. I haven't read any of these but I was super impressed with the Taylor Jenkins- Reid book I read, and the ones that have come out since have looked intriguing as well, so I'll probably get to Seven Husbands soon.

    1. It sounds so cliched, but Evelyn Hugo totally came to life for me. I wanted to go watch all her old movies. Ha!

  7. REV! REV! REV! The smartest thing Kemmerer did was give us a book all about him, because we would have nagged her to death for it. He is absolutely something special, and I think it was fantastic.

    1. Oh my gosh, yes! Thank goodness Kemmerer knew she had something special in Rev.

  9. That's a tough question! I did enjoy Gavriel in The Coldest Girl in Coldtown. I think Will Trent in the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter is pretty unforgettable, but so is his ex, Angie, who I hate with a passion! I need to read the Kemmerer book. Great post, Tanya! :)

    1. I wish Holly Black would write another book set in that world. I would love more Gavriel!

  10. Totally agree! Sometimes the most unforgettable character in a book is the rottenest one in the story. It's not necessarily the hero or the star of the show who's unforgettable -- sometimes it's the villain or a side character. I think a great example is Harry Potter. There are SOOO many great side characters in that series who outshine the hero. Fun topic!

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)

  11. I see the topic 'unforgettable characters' and my brain goes blank. I don't know any characters. I remember nothing. No characters to see here... Nope. It's so silly! I have so many (I know I do!) but right now the brain is like, "Hahahaha, blocked you." :(

I'm looking forward to 'meeting' Evelyn Hugo from your list. I have that one to read soon.

    1. Don't you hate that? That happens often as soon as I read a TTT topic. Five minutes ago I could have rattled off a list but as soon as I'm put on the spot... nope, it's all gone. LOL

I hope you get to Evelyn Hugo soon!

    1. Those two boys from A List of Cages were both sp special, but it was Julian that really captured my heart and stayed with me long after the book was over.

    1. Evelyn became fully realized for me and I actually thought I could Google all her old movies at one point. Ha! And Miles... my gosh, his backstory about broke me and he was truly unforgettable.

  14. Skylar in I'll Meet You There was definitely unforgettable. That entire book was, I still like to read that and it will never get old. Why haven't I read more from Heather Demetrios? And I think I agree with miles, too. I may have only read Ugly Love once but that book definitely stuck with me.

    1. I've actually never felt able to go back and reread I'll Meet You There. That book had a huge impact on me and is still one of my all-time favorites, but it was also super emotional. My husband served in the military for 20 years so I think the stuff that Josh dealt with sometimes hit close to home.
