WWW Wednesday #83 | April 15, 2020

WWW Wednesdays is a meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words.
Just answer three questions and share what you're reading.

I have to go into the office for an hour or so this morning and I'm equal parts excited and concerned. Exited because, well... getting out of the house and people! And concerned because... getting out of the house and people. I imagine there are very few people there at all, plus they are performing "wellness checks" on everyone before you can gain entry. Your temperature is taken, you have to answer several questions... so that's an added level of comfort. Even so, I'm glad that I should only have to be there for an hour or so before I can scurry back home.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Currently reading: After finishing Where the Lost Wander I was desperate for something lighter and easier. Until the End is totally hitting the spot. I was surprised that it was way longer than all the other books in the series but this morning I discovered why. Rock and Trisha's story actually ended on page 187. The whole rest of the book is separate epilogues for each couple from the previous books. Color me happy!
Current progress: page 196/392

Currently listening: I'm still listening to Cake and have almost made it to the halfway point. I've found that without my daily commute (short as it was) I'm not making time to listen to the book. So it's slow-going but still really good.
Current progress: 45%

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
I haven't sat down and gathered my thoughts enough to write my review of Where the Lost Wander, but I will say that this was a tough read. Really tough. As always, Amy Harmon's writing was beautiful and moving and she is an incredible story teller. But the subject matter and the situations in this one really drained me emotionally and I found myself only able to read very small bits at a time. Then I'd be overwhelmed and have to walk away. Where the Lost Wander was unforgettable... and it's going to be hard to write a worthy review.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

Not totally sure what's up next but Weiner's upcoming Big Summer is a strong possibility.

What are you currently reading?
I wanna know! :)

  1. Jennifer Weiner's books can be good for a laugh! I'm actually reading a food memoir right now - thought I'd switch to nonfiction for a bit.

    1. Jennifer Weiner is one of my favorites when it comes to women's fiction. Mrs. Everything was just phenomenal and one of my favorites reads last year.

  2. I heard a lot of places are doing those wellness checks. It's something, right? I don't know if they are doing it at my job. I was on the phone with one of my teammates yesterday, and I know they have to wear masks. I also found out that someone is working at my desk (which explains why I cannot remote into my computer during the day - mystery solved!) I hope the office visit goes well for you. I have had good luck with Weiner's books. I have not checked out the newest, but they are always a good bet.

    1. Yeah, I hear about the wellness checks being used more and more often. And it's a good thing but obviously not foolproof. I'd rather just stay at home and not take the risk.

Weiner is one that usually really works for me. Who Do You Love was wonderful - and Mrs. Everything was one of my top reads of 2019. I have high hopes for Big Summer.

  3. I think wellness checks are going to be part of the new normal when we finally do get to go back to work. Maybe they'll keep us working at home?

I just finished a biography of Fred Rogers, so now I'm settling back into another thriller!

    1. I actually hope the WFH order gets extended. Here in FL it ends on April 30 and that feels way too soon.

  4. I understand the equal part excited and afraid Tanya! And yes Where the Lost Wander was unique. Amy has never gone so far in the "hard scenes"!

  5. I have to go to Costco for an RX this week and I am the same way. It will be nice to drive to a bigger city but Costco...people. I'm legit nervous.

Reading. What is this activity you speak of? I'm really struggling with that but I started the new Annabeth Albert arc last night and hoping it clicks.

    Stay safe!

    1. I hope the Costco trip goes well. I enjoyed getting out and being in the office for a couple hours, but I was just as happy to get back home.

I hope the new Annabeth Albert works for you!

    1. I am totally enjoying it, Deanna! Jake and Casey had an instant connection but the actual relationship is taking it slow and I love that. :)

  7. Wow, Harmon's book sounds like one I need to put off for now. I don't think I can handle lots of heavy at the moment. Glad Until the End is hitting the spot for you now!!

    1. Yeah, if you're not in the mood for heavy I would definitely put Where the Lost Wander on hold. It is stunningly good... but it was tough.

    2. I will definitely pick it up down the road!

  8. I FEEL you with the Amy Harmon book. WOW I sobbed hard. Especially since I knew it wasn't going to be like, super happy? GUTTED. But I loved the romance SO much, and the story itself was SO interesting, and sadly, pretty accurate from everything I know about the Trail. I am currently reading Clap When You Land which is also a tearjerker (though it's in verse and I think maybe that is why I haven't cried yet? I mean, goodness knows I am a crier!) and I think up next is going to be Goldilocks by Laura Lam!

    1. I loved the romance, too, Shannon! It was sooo slow burn and I just ate it up. Naomi was so forthright about her feelings. John felt so much but was so hesitant and silent. Gah! :)

I hope Goldilocks will be a hit!

  9. I can imagine getting out into the world after being on lockdown is equal parts exciting and terrifying! Hope you had fun and stayed safe, of course. :)

I think this Amy Harmon is one I'd have to be in the mood for. I'm having trouble with heavier reads right now. I need a bit of escapism! Glad to hear you're having that with Abbi Glines.

    1. It was actually good being in the office for a couple hours yesterday. My boss and I acted like we hadn't seen each other in a year. LOL And then we Skyped with the other boss so we could all chat. Made me realize I miss being in there.

  10. The only one of these I've heard of is Big Summer. I hope you like it! It felt so weird to drive my car the other day to the grocery store. It had been like two weeks! Crazy times.

    1. I know what you mean. Going into the office yesterday for a couple hours was so bizarre. Not only just leaving the house (LOL) but the office was so empty. Like 10-12 cars in the parking lot, instead of the usual 300+.

  11. I completely understand your excitement and hesitance about going to the office. I hope it all went ok. I definitely feel like it's going to be a big transition back to normal life when this is all over, we'll become so used to avoiding contact with people I think it'll be a shock to the system.

    1. It went fine at the office yesterday. As much as I enjoy working from home and have had no issues with the transition, it was also a reminder that I do kind of miss being in the office.

And I think you're so right. I was just talking about this last night. When things start to return to normal I think many people who rush right out and pick up where there left off. But I think there will be others (myself included) who will be a lot more hesitant. DO I want to shake hands anymore? Do I want to sit in a crowded restaurant? It is going to be a shock to the system.

  12. Gosh this isolation, I started off feeling really bored and now I'm actually really enjoying it. I'm organising the house, cooking, baking, caring for my elderly mother who had emergency surgery. It's almost hard to remember what life was like before everything went into lockdown. I hope you're keeping well Tanya darling and keeping busy.

    1. I was joking with a friend yesterday that this situation has shown me that I would likely have no issue at all becoming a hermit. LOL I hope your mother is recovering well post-surgery, Kelly!

  15. My audiobook listening time has been way down too. It is amazing what a change in schedule will do. I am so glad you are getting all the epilogues. I really like seeing how everyone is doing after the story ends. I will be looking forward to your thoughts on Cake since I have that one in my account to read at some point.

  20. Big Summer looks like such a great, summery book! I am currently reading a book on tea, so that I can learn more about the history behind each cup!

I have been staying super busy during this quarantine by reading, and find that with every day that goes past, I find another book or two in my house that I add to the top of the pile. How is the quarantine treating you? I hope you are well!

  21. When are we going to stop feeling afraid to go to a public place? I literally get the cold sweats. It's going to take some time. But yes, the people who aren't worried now won't be worried then. Or maybe they'll be home sick..

    1. Unfortunately my state seems to now be the poster child for rushing to reopen things. We seem to be the model for what NOT to do. Last week the mayor chose to reopen the beaches. For "exercise purposes Only", of course. Ahem. Naturally, people flocked to the beach. It's so frustrating.

  22. I never thought I'd say it but I'd love to go into the office! Even for an hour or so... I'm currently hating everything about lockdown. Everything. I need a break from lockdown before I go back into lockdown. But the government has extended ours for another 3 weeks. *sobs / screams into a pillow*

    1. Isn't it bizarre? I had no idea I'd miss going in to the office every day. WFH certainly has its perks, but I will be happy to get back to the office. Whenever that might be. The stay at home order for my state ends on April 30. And so far I haven't heard the state government say anything about extending it. Which is pretty concerning.
