The Sunday Post #248 | May 23, 2021

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's a chance to share news: a post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books,
and share what's coming up on your blog in the week ahead.
The transition back to more in-office time has started. I've been working two days in the office and three at home and starting tomorrow that changes to four days a week in-office. In some ways it's good to be back, getting into the groove of the old normal, but it's still kind of strange and there are definitely some aspects of working from home that I miss.

Our dryer quit working and we went through our home warranty to have it repaired... which ended up being something of a headache and took over a week. Yes, this is a first world problem and really was just an inconvenience, but had we skipped the home warranty company and just called for a repair it likely would have been fixed the same day (or at least within 24 hours). Of course, we also would have had to pay the full amount for the repair instead of just the service call. If you have a home warranty service, are you happy with it? Do you think it's worth it?

We're considering a bit of travel in June. It's been sooo long since we've gone anywhere and I am so ready to just get away for a bit. To the point that I don't really care where we go or what we do. LOL This will likely be just 3-4 days but it's still exciting to look forward to.

Temps are going to shoot up into the 90's this week and I'm not ready. It's hard to complain because here it is the last week of May (and usually it's been in the 90's by now for weeks) but still... summer is my least favorite season and summers in Florida are long and brutal.

This week's 80's music fix is Lay Your Hands On Me (1985) by Thompson Twins. I always loved the lyrics: I see your face and sense the grace and feel the magic in your touch.

  1. NJ beat you to the 90s. At least we didn't have full sun or much humidity this weekend to accompany the high temps. I am excited for your trip! I felt ok when I traveled in March, and like you said, it's nice to get away.

    1. How crazy is that? Even if the humidity isn't as bad there, 90-something is still hot! Yes, I am sooo ready to get away for a bit. It's been a long time coming. :)

  2. Summer is my least favorite season, too! Like Sam said, we've been having a lot of hot weather, and it's really too early for it! I'm not excited to see what summer actually brings.

    1. It's usually in the 90's here long before now so I have no right to complain, but still... I'm never ready for the hot weather.

  3. It has been hot here in Ohio and I'm already over it. I can't imagine a whole summer in Fl. No way!

  4. We got a home warranty when we bought the house because some of the systems are old and expensive. YES it definitely takes longer than doing it on our own but it's also somewhat less expensive. I've had the hot water heater and HVAC replaced, and another fix to the upstairs HVAC. I'll keep it until the oldest big items are replaced.

I wouldn't be ready to go back to the office yet, but I know it's happening. I feel the same about travel for now. We did for the wedding but I don't think we will again for awhile

It's also going into the 90s this week here but with a north wind. Then thunderstorms and rain all next weekend.

    1. Yeah, we're still on the fence about the warranty company. Between the cost of the warranty, the longer amount of time for repairs, and the fact that we have no say in who they send... meh, I'm not loving it.

      I love a good thunderstorm!

  5. Sorry your dryer was on the fritz - quite annoying! We're finally going on a trip in August, and I am so ready!

    1. Hooray for some upcoming travel! I think we are all past-ready for that.

  6. Home service warranty isn’t a thing here, We have pretty reasonable consumer guarantee’s.
The postal meme made me laugh

Wishing you a great reading week

    1. Home warranty companies are used often here, but I'm still rethinking our decision.

  7. They definitely make using the warranty difficult. It makes me think twice about purchasing an extra warranty.

Summer is my least favorite season, too, which is why I'm not going to stay in Southern California. We're looking to move up north within the next 5 years. We're gonna be in the 90s this next week too. :/ Stay cool and happy reading, Tanya!

    1. How exciting on the move! So does that mean you'll also be retiring within the next 5 years? If so, color me jealous! :)

  8. Ugh, it's already hitting the 90's here too and I don't like it. I either need to be in a pool or it needs to cool the hell down. hah

Whew - four days a week in office already? That seems like such a jump! hah I hope the adjustment goes well.

    1. We talked about going to the pool at the amenities center on Sunday and I decided it was even too hot for the pool. LOL

Yeah, from 1-2 days in the office to 4... it's been a switch!

  9. This is the first time I'm hearing about a Home Warranty and now it's all making sense. Every time I call my Mom's home insurance company (Allstate) to ask them "Is this covered???" the answer is always NO. I learned that basically insurance is for fires and trees falling on your house. Not much else.

And now, thanks to your post, I am learning that a home WARRANTY is what you need to cover all the stuff I keep asking the insurance about. Why didn't they just tell me that FFS???? Ugh.

I'm expecting all Mom's appliances to up and die on me at any moment. We've already replaced the Heat/AC and septic system. Who is next? Water heater, fridge, washer or dryer? Sigh.

Oh and I loathe and despise summer, heat, and humidity.

    Have a great week!

    1. Yep, home insurance definitely doesn't cover repairs. Seems like they would have told you that up front! The A/C and the septic systems are both huge replacements... I hope everything else hangs in there for a while!

  10. It made it to 90 here today, too. I'm really not ready for summer... Virginia is pretty hot and humid, too, though not as bad as Florida.

I'm hoping to travel in August; we want to go see our offspring, and my parents.

    1. Oh yeah, if you're in VA you know about hot summers. :)
I hope you're able to make your trip in August!

  11. The transitions back are gonna be interesting, no question. I hope companies are flexible since a lot of work can be done from home, I think, but everything's different and some people prefer to be back. I like working from home personally.

I hope you guys get to go somewhere. It's been a long isolation and we're taking a trip too later in june- we're gonna hit a little minicabin for a few days with the kids.

Summers in FL would kill me! :):)

You can't go wrong with the Thompson Twins really.

    1. I actually enjoyed WFH for the last year+. It definitely worked for me. Being in-office 4 days a week feels strange now.

      The cabin getaway sounds great!

  12. I'm sitting here trying to imagine what 4 days back in the office would feel like. My company is actively studying and planning what they're calling "the future of work" and I'm very curious to find out their plans are. Yay for planning a trip! I just started re-planning my son's first trip to NYC, which got cancelled before because of COVID. I'm a little nervous about it but also excited at the prospect of being somewhere besides my own house, lol.

    1. It'll be interesting to see what your company comes up with moving forward. Hopefully it will be an option that works for you.

Right? I'm not even particularly concerned about where we go... I just want to go somewhere! :)

  13. Summer is my least favourite season too but I enjoy living through summer-esqe weather and complaining about it. :) However, 2021 is, so far, also robbing me of that. We've had nothing but rain, cold temps and storms since May hit. Fun times!

I'm 3 - 4 days a week back in office now too and I'm fine with it. We've always had flexible working but few used it to full advantage. Covid and all the mandated WFH has shifted the culture so now the vast majority is fully embracing it and it's nice. I'm not a peopley person but I think I've actually missed people!

I hope you find somewhere lovely for your June mini-escape! That sounds wonderful.

    1. Rain and cold in May? I can't even imagine.

The shift back to working in the office has been pretty seamless. And is starting to feel more normal. Next month, more employees are expected back so it won't seem so empty.

  14. So sorry to hear about your dryer situation! Appliances breaking always stress me out. It's always a hassle. I'm considering going back to the office a few days a week just for a switch in scenery but I'm also hesitant. I hope you get to travel!

  15. I feel your dryer situation. My dishwasher died four weeks ago. My replacement was coming today, but I just got a call it didn't make it on the truck. :(

I didn't realize there was another Cake book. I thought I was done with that series...

    1. Well, if I had a way to dry the clothes outside I certainly have the weather for it! :) My mom still hangs out some of her laundry rather than use the dryer.

  18. Our new house came with a home warranty. The first week we were in the house the roof leaked (which did not make me happy) but of course the warranty didn't cover that. The dishwasher broke but it was cheaper to fix it myself (and probably quicker) than the service call would be. So I haven't used it and won't be renewing. I am glad that you were able to get your dryer fixed! Yay for planning a trip! We decided to go along with my daughter when she goes to a conference in July and I am so looking forward to a change of scenery. I hope that this summer is kind to you and that the adjustment to being in the office is an easy one.

    1. Yikes, a roof leak in the first week. Ugh. We've been discussing whether the warranty is really worth it. We paid for three years so we're considering cancelling and getting a refund for the remaining two years. It's feeling like more trouble that it's worth. Plus, we have no say in who they send for repairs and the dryer people seemed dodgy.

  19. It must be so strange being back in the office almost full time. I've still not been in my office, I think maybe next month if the full restrictions ease here, but I'm still waiting to book in my vaccine. It should be in the next week or two but still have to wait. I hope you manage to book a trip, after so long stuck close to home I think we all want a change of scenery.

    1. I hope you've managed to at least get your first dose by now! I think nationwide we are at about 43% fully vaccinated which means we have a long way to go. I think there is a large population that will refuse to get it.
