10 Year Challenge #BookTag

I was tagged by Deanna @ A Novel Glimpse to do the 10 Year Challenge Book Tag. The tag originally created by Rincey Reads

This tag sounded a bit daunting at first, but I've been on Goodreads since 2007, several years beyond the ten year mark, plus I've kept my own spreadsheet of what I've read for at least that long, so I had a couple good tools to help me along. :)

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK IN 2011?

I'm assuming this means my favorite book I read in 2011, not necessarily one that was published in 2011. That would be Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah (published in 2010).

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK OF 2021 (SO FAR)?

My first five star book of the year is still my favorite book of the year.

WHAT WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE BOOK IN 2011?

I remember nothing about this one, but my Goodreads review states in no uncertain terms that I was not a fan.

WHAT WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE BOOK IN 2021?

This is an easy one because my first book of the year was such a total dud. I'd been pretty excited for Until the Last Breath by Shanora Williams but there was almost nothing about it that I liked.

WHAT IS A BOOK PUBLISHED IN 2011 THAT YOU STILL WANT TO READ?

According to Goodreads, The Taker by Alma Katsu was published in 2011 and it's still on my Want to Read shelf. I'm still mildly interested but it's unlikely I'll get to it.

WHAT BOOK PUBLISHED (OR IS TO BE PUBLISHED) IN 2021 DO YOU WANT TO READ BEFORE 2022?

So many! But I'd say the one I'm most excited for right now (and will very likely be my next read) is Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

WHAT IS A GENRE YOU USED TO READ A LOT BUT DON'T ANYMORE?

YA Contemporary. (Ex. from 2011: Reason to Breathe by Rebecca Donavan)
There are a few rare exceptions, but I have less and less interest in reading about characters 30+ years younger than me.

WHAT IS A NEW GENRE YOU'VE DISCOVERED SINCE 2011?

I'm guessing this means a genre new-to-me genre and that would be urban fantasy. Not that I've read a lot of it, but some of what I've read became new favorites. In particular, The Others series by Anne Bishop. Absolutely love this series!

WHAT IS A READING/BOOK HABIT YOU HOPE TO LEAVE BEHIND THIS DECADE?

One habit I did ditch over the last decade or so was reading hyped books that I had little interest in. It took a while but I finally realized that rarely worked out for me. I know my own reading tastes, and it doesn't matter how hyped a book is, or how many of my bookish friends love it, if I'm not genuinely interested there is no point in reading it. I'm only going to be disappointed.

WHAT IS A NEW READING HABIT/GOAL YOU WANT TO START IN THE UPCOMING DECADE?

I'm drawing a blank on this one. I guess I'd like to get back in the habit of reviewing books very soon after reading them, instead of waiting weeks (or months) and by then I've lost details and cannot capture how it made me feel. But will this actually happen... *shrugs*

If you want to participate in the 10 Year Challenge, consider yourself tagged! :)

  1. Love this! The Things We Leave Behind is definitely also one of my favorite reads! Such a great read! And I’ve been wanting to read the Other series for a while now! That’s one of those series that have been on my tbr forever.

    1. I certainly recommend The Others series! I've read the books in paperback and on audio and both ways are excellent! :)

  2. Fun tag! I'm mostly over the need to read hyped books, too. More often than not I'm disappointed by them!

    1. Yeah, I often seem to be the odd man out when it comes to super hyped books.

  3. I love The Others series so much! I'm a little behind on the spin-off but I think about Simon & Meg a lot! <3

    1. Yes! I was (am) so invested in those characters! The spin-off's were really good but nothing will compare to the original characters at the Lakeside Courtyard. :)

  4. This is fun. I've had my blog for longer than 10 years but I don't think I've used Goodreads regularly for that long. LOL I got a physical book review journal though and I'm trying to write reviews there when I can so I'm not completely lost once I got to type them up.

    1. I love physical journals but I always don't want to track things in multiple places so... I just stick with GoodReads (and my spreadsheet). I hope the review journal works well for you!

  5. Cool tag. I think I joined Goodreads in 2011, but I didn’t start using it until 2014. I’ll be able to do this tag in a few years.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

  6. Yay! Thanks for doing this tag! I loved reading your answers. Winter Garden is one of my favorite Kristin Hannah books. I feel like it is underrated. I also loved Yarros' book. I had a hard time choosing just one favorite for this year. That book would be in the running. :)

    1. Winter Garden just floored me. I actually think I loved it even more that The Nightingale.

  7. Reviewing right after finishing a book was a thing for me that has been abandoned. I still think those reviews are a bit better at times, since I can capture my excitement more easily. I don't rush to hyped books either, but I am not sure I ever really did. I mean, I read some, but not because they are hyped.

    1. Yeah, reviewing immediately after reading if great for capturing the emotions instead of just general feelings later. I really need to get back into that habit.

  8. Holy cow! I forget most things about a book right after I put it down lol

I have Malibu Rising coming up too.

  10. Oh this looks so fun! I started keeping track of my books in 2014, so I have a few years before I can participate :)

Too bad Until the Last Breath wasn't so great. It has such a beautiful cover! Looks can be deceiving though.

    1. Oh boy, I had such high hopes for that one. Even bought a physical copy. But... ugh! The main character was just awful!

  15. Rebecca Yarros has a way of leaving me broken and devastated for days/weeks/months/YEARS after reading some of her military based books but I still want to read The Things We Leave Unfinished... I just need to brace myself and be in the right mood!

    1. Yep, Rebecca Yarros is a master at destroying all your feelings. You definitely have to be in the right mood to tackle one of her books.

  16. Such a cool book tag. I think it's awesome you've kept reading spreadsheets for so long, I always forget about them, I have to rely on goodreads which I'm not sure I used much in 2011. It's cool you've recently discovered UF. I find those books so good (even if the series are crazy long sometimes). And I always say it when I see she has a new release but I seriously need to check out some Rebecca Yarros books, I read the military ones way back when but haven't read anything since and I don't know why.

    1. I've read so little UF, and it's really only The Others series that made a real impression on me. I could keep reading about those characters for ages, but sadly Anne Bishop dares to write other things. LOL

  17. I am so bad at keeping track of things myself so Goodreads is really my only record of what I have read. I would say that 10 years ago when I wasn't reviewing or getting ARCS I probably had a little more fun with my reading choices.

    1. I agree, Carole, and that makes me a little sad. It's not that I don't read what I want but I feel like my reading is more scheduled now with arcs, and I have to review even when I don't feel like it. Another reason I've taken a big step away from arcs.
