Top Ten Tuesday: Foreign Settings

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic:
Books That Take Place in Another Country
I thought I was really going to have to dig for this one but it was actually easier than I thought. Here are some of my favorite books with a foreign (non-U.S.) setting.

AUSTRALIA
Stolen - Lucy Christopher
SWEDEN
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson
SCOTLAND
Outlander - Diana Gabaldon
ENGLAND
Me Before You - Jojo Moyes
RUSSIA
The Crown's Game - Evelyn Skye
ITALY
From Sand and Ash - Amy Harmon
CANADA
Good Boy - Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy
FRANCE
The Nightingale - Kristin Hannah
NETHERLANDS
The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank
WALES
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - Ransom Riggs

Have you read any of these books?

  1. We have been talking about journals in my classes at school, so I shared Anne Frank with my primary students. I hope they will read her diary when they get older.

Here's my list: Books Set in Another Country. I hope you will stop by and take a look.

    1. Oh, I hope they will, too, Deb. Such a powerful book. And it’s important that every generation learns and remembers what happened. Looking forward to checking out your list!

    1. Yep, almost completely set in Italy, although there may have been bits toward the end that were just outside of Italy. I highly recommend it, Grace. It was my favorite read of 2017.

    1. Exactly! Armchair travel is awesome when you can’t actually jet out of the country. :)

    1. It’s been years since I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And it was sooo outside my wheelhouse but I was intrigued by the story and all the buzz around it. I ended up binging the first two books, counting the days until the third book released, and then inhaling it, too. Such a great trilogy! I know it’s now a series with another writer taking over but I probably won’t continue. As a side note, both movies (Swedish and English) were great adaptions!

  7. "The Diary of a Young Girl" makes me cry every time I reread it. "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" is a great read, too.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

    1. I don’t think I’ve ever actually reread The Diary of a Young Girl. I was a teenager when I read it and I was devastated by it. Just wrecked. I knew what it was going in, but even so, it was tough and made quite an impression.

  11. This was one of my favorite recent TT topics. I need more Sweden in my reading, and Wales too. Would love to see more rural Wales settings. Australia and france are usually winners for me as well.

    1. As a child I read several books by Ruth M. Arthur (a UK writer) and a few of those were set in Wales. I wouldn't mind rereading those. Sweden seems to have a horde of really great crime/thriller novels.

    1. Oh that book. It destroyed me and I cried so many tears throughout it. Kristin Hannah never fails to impress me with her story telling and the research she does. Winter Graden was another by her that made a big impact.

  16. Oooh I did not know that From Sand and Ash was in Italy! Also didn't know about Miss Peregrine's! Learn something new in these TTTs, I say. The Crown's Game is one of my faves, because the author really nails the setting I think! Great choices!

  18. Ooh you've re-sparked my interest for The Crown's Game! I've had it on my TBR since before it came out, but I lost interest after a while, but I'm a sucker for books set abroad. I didn't know it's set in Russia! ♥

    1. The Crown’s Game was a lot of fun. I kind of consider it “fantasy lite.” Perfect for readers like me who don’t read a lot of fantasy. :)
