The Sunday Post #168

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's a chance to share news - a post to recap the past week on your blog,
showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is
coming up on your blog in the week ahead. You can find the info here:

  • A break from the heat! And just in time, too, because I was about to start crafting a voodoo doll of the weatherman and stick pins in it until he delivered better weather. ;) Yesterday it rained virtually all day and stayed in the 80's. A temperature that starts with an 8? What's next... snow?!
  • Yesterday was a fairly busy one. I had a hair appointment (I do believe Lindsi and I were sitting in a salon chair at the same time yesterday afternoon) and then The Husband and I ran a few errands. We made up for it with a quiet evening in, complete with take-out pizza and playing cards. We're extreme like that.
  • I saw Becky Albertalli announce some casting news for a Love, Simon TV series. It sounds awesome but honestly it will take a lot for me to watch it and actually stick with it. I am just not a TV watcher. I even gave up on the BH90210 reboot after one episode. LOL
  • In exciting (only to me) news, as of today I am down to only FOUR arcs between now and the end of the year. With no intention of requesting any more for the foreseeable future. My goal this year was to request less and Read. My. Own. Books. I'm excited to be doing that more and more often. I'm loving it!
  • The heat may have lessened (slightly) but this still looks so cool and refreshing and I really, really want some.

WHAT I READ IN THE LAST WEEK:

I read two more Sea Breeze books in the last week. Abbi has a real tendency to write the same characters over and over again. The guys are all alpha types with serious caveman tendencies. I mean, seriously, they are all sex gods who are insanely jealous/possessive when they finally meet "the one". The girls are always virginal good girls who fall for the sex god-caveman, put up with his insanity/bad behavior, and he reforms and becomes a one-woman man (but is still jealous/possessive). So yeah, they're pretty ridiculous - and not exactly relationship goals (LOL) - but they're also crazy addictive and fun, quick reads. And, yes I'll admit it, there have been a couple times where Abbi has managed to create a few scenes that actually got an emotional response from me (but no tears - let's be real Ha!).

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING:

I'm taking a break from the Sea Breeze series to dive into The Reckless Oath We Made. Greenwood wrote one of my favorite books of  2016 (All the Ugly and Wonderful Things) and this is her first release since then. I'm only about three chapters in, but I'm already captivated by these unique characters. Zee is a waitress and also a part-time drug runner. She needs the money to help support her mother and nephew plus pay her medical bills. Gentry, who I've just met, talks and thinks in medieval English (is that even a thing? I don't know the correct term for it... obviously). He is a knight who watches over Zee. So yeah, interesting characters. I am so excited to see where this one goes. Greenwood astounded me with All the Ugly and Wonderful Things so I am expecting more greatness!

KINDLE BOOKS

I one-clicked When You Were Mine about 2.5 seconds after reading Nicci's review. I'm convinced I will love it. I nabbed Verity when it went on sale for 99¢. I own a physical copy but I've been wanting The Husband to read it and he much prefers to read on his iPad. Rookie Move was another 99¢ steal. Again, I own the paperback but now I have options when I get around to reading it.

LIBRARY LOANS

The Flatshare has been on my radar since way before it was even released. As soon as I read the synopsis I thought it was a total "me" kind of book. I discovered Tone Deaf when Sam included it in one of her Can't Wait Wednesday posts. Fingers crossed I get to both of these before they're due back at the library!

How was your week? Any new books? Any news to share?
I'd love to hear about it!

  1. You need to read Verity and Rookie Move! And wow, only 4 arcs!! I only wish I had that number. I have 13 for this year and 4 for 2020 🙈

    1. I loved Verity! I read in back in January and thought it was phenomenal. I just bought in on Kindle so my husband will read it (he prefers Kindle over physical books). Good luck with all those arcs! :)

  2. Yay for a break from the heat. And check you out almost getting through your arcs for the year. I do want to try and read more of my own stuff but I feel like I've been borrowing more ad more books of late, so I guess that's better than arcs, not guilt if I don't finish. I need to try and get my shelves cleared through. I've read and enjoyed Tone Deaf, it wasn't my favourite ever book but I did enjoy it. I just wish I could remember what happened a little better. But The Flatshare! I really hope you enjoy it, I loved that book and I feel like I've recommended it to everyone.

    1. It's an awesome feeling to be working my way through my arcs... without requesting new ones. :) I'm so excited to see that you love The Flatshare. Makes me ever more antsy to dive right into it!

  3. Oh I'm so glad to hear you had a break from the heat! Hopefully, this means cooler weather is on the horizon! That's amazing about the ARCs! That's my goal for the end of the year because I want to start next year with a clean slate. My reading speed is no longer what it used to be, so I need to be much more selective. I hope you have a good week, Tanya!

  4. Glad you got a break from the heat. Its ramping up again here. Back to the high 90's just in time for me to go back to work (in a building with no AC). Congrats on the ARCs! Thats awesome!

    1. Your school has no AC?! Ack!!!! Cruel and unusual punishment! I am outraged on your behalf! LOL

  5. I've slowed down on the ARCs this year. I learned my lesson in 2015 when I requested and accepted almost 20 and only read not more than half of it. I didn't expect real life would get in the way of me reading and some ARCs I got didn't sound as appealing as they were before they landed on my e-readers. The latter is really a sad thing for me and I don't like feeling that way when it comes to books I was supposed to be excited about. Anyway, "Abbi has a real tendency to write the same characters over and over again" - THAT is seriously why I stopped with her books. It's just copy+paste now. But I did enjoy this series. Seriously my guilty pleasure reads. These characters and their stories are somewhat of a mess but it's my kind of mess lol.

    1. Ugh, I hate when that happens with arcs. You're excited for one, you request it and get approved, and then some time passes and the excitement totally wears off. *sigh*

Abbi definitely has a formula and the woman sticks to it. And you're so right - the characters and stories are a total mess. But I love it. :)

  6. I don't even know where to start, because I have so much I want to respond to

I cannot believe you only have 4 ARCs. Wow! Like every year, I am trying to balance it out more. I have a way more manageable amount for the rest of the year, but am going to try to keep it to 12 a month from here on out. It's written, I am now accountable for it.

The kid made the homemade Dole Whip (FACT: it's one of her favorite treats), and she said it came out good. Almost as good as at the parks.

I giggled as I read the bit about Glines, because it's true, but I think the same thing that drives people to watch soap operas, drives us to read those books.

I like the Bruiser's series, and I really enjoyed The Flatshare. I hope you like all your hauled books.

    1. I think if I had 12 arcs in one month I would cry into a little ball and have a meltdown. LOL

      I've actually never had a Dole Whip! It's a sheltered life I've led. :)

You're so right about the Abbi Glines-soap opera comparison. That's what her books feel like to me. I don't believe in "guilty pleasures" (just like what you like - why feel guilty about it!) but her books are on that par for me.

I'm excited to get to the Bruisers series. I just want to read the latest (last?) book in the True North series before I move on.

  7. Congratulations on doing so well with your ARC pile! I haven't been requesting like I used to either and like you, I also had a goal of reading more of my own books this year. You are doing much better than I am :)

I am so glad to find someone else who buys Kindle versions of books even when you already own it in print. I sometimes end of with the kindle copy, print copy, and audiobook of some books! I hope you enjoy The Reckless Oath We Made. I have a copy but haven't had the chance to start with it yet. I am a little nervous about it though since I didn't love her first book. Have a great week!

    1. Hope you get caught up with your arcs, too!
I don't always buy double copies of books, but when it's something I really enjoyed... absolutely! Like you, sometimes I end up with print, kindle and audio! I probably went into The Reckless Oath with better expectations than you since I really appreciated Greenwood's previous book. So far I'm loving this one.

  9. Hah! We were totally at the salon at the same time. I decided not to go with the bulbs and just stick to my usual trim. We've been swimming a lot this summer, and staying outside most of the time, so my split ends were begging to be cut off. I'm glad you're getting a reprieve from the heat! We're not. I got in the car earlier today, and it's initial temperature read 111. We cannot go to the playgrounds, because the equipment is too hot, and everything is pretty miserable right now.

    1. Good decision on the bulbs... save that for a special occasion. :)
Isn't that initial temperature always shocking when you first get in the car? Mine will sometimes top 100 and then it levels out once the car starts moving and the fans are doing their thing. Still so miserable, though!

  11. I've been naughty with the arcs. I've lots of holidays ones to read in the coming months... Oh well. I'm still doing better than I used to be! I love just reading whatever whenever. Next year, there will be more of it. (Can you believe I'm talking next year already?!)

I laughed so hard at the Abbi Glines description. You stole the words right out of my mouth! In theory, I hate everything about them. In reality? Not so much. They're a guilty pleasure. Neither her males or females are people I'd ever want to meet in real life... I'd end up killing them dead.

Pizza and cards sounds pretty good. :)

The Reckless Oath We Made sounds really interesting!

  16. Yay for only 4 ARCs to go! Reading your own books is such a pleasure. Not that I'm not grateful for ARCs, I just love the low pressure reads, ones where you don't have to leave a review.

Yay for Rookie Move! One of my favorites! I'm interested in Tone Deaf as well after Sam's post. :)

  17. I'm glad you had some cooler weather. It's supposed to be so freaking hot here today, and I'm not looking forward to it. Nice deal on Verity - I still need to read that one! I hope your husband enjoys it. I'd be curious about a Love, Simon show but it depends on where it's going to be (Netflix, etc.). I'm not great with TV shows either, but maybe? LOL

  18. YOu are doing awesome with only 4 ARCS. I think I have 4 ARCS to read and review in the next week. I keep up pretty well though. I figure if I am going to read and review them anyway I might as well get the ARC rather than wait at the library or buy them. I do have some books I have purchased which I want to read though. So kudos to you! Happy reading and yay for cooler weather. I'm hoping for more 8x days myself.

It's always nice when you don't have to follow a reading schedule, and can read whatever you want, whenever you want. Have a great week Tanya!
