The Sunday Post #214

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's a chance to share news - a post to recap the past week on your blog,
showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is
coming up on your blog in the week ahead. You can find the info here:

  • Florida is continuing to have record-setting numbers of positive COVID-19 cases. The governor's rush to reopen the state is blowing up in his face.
  • Staring tomorrow my company is shifting to a voluntary WFH operation. I just returned to the office on June 1 and most did not come back until June 15. And now here we are going right back to working from home. It is voluntary but I am sure there will be many that take that option. For those that continue to work in the office there will be plenty of changes: all break rooms are closed, face masks must be worn anytime you step away from your immediate work area, any travel must be reported to your manager in advance and you must self-quarantine after.
  • The Husband and I received some news this week that was much needed and eased our minds. We popped open some bubbly last night to celebrate. :)
  • This week's 80's music fix is I Knew You Were Waiting For Me (1987) by George Michael and Aretha Franklin. They paired up and made such a great song.

eARCS FOR REVIEW:

I think I've requested/read maybe two ARCs this entire year (one by Katie McGarry back in February and one from Sarina Bowen in the spring), and now all of a sudden I find myself with three requests and approvals in the same week. I rarely request ARCs but these three spoke to me and the pub dates are spaced out so I went for it.

How was your week? Any new books? Any news to share?
I'd love to hear about it!

  2. I'm really worried about the American COVID numbers I see flying by every day... I'm not even able to grasp it, and I'm worried for my friends and all the book bloggers that I know that live there. As I read it; You're not agreeing with the governor to open things up so fast?

Over here, The Netherlands, they don't update the numbers daily anymore because it's been 0 for a while now. I really hope the numbers in America will go down soon too.

    1. No, I don't agree with the governor at all. Florida (where I live) was one of the last states to lock down and yet one of the first states to reopen. I haven't agreed with any of his decisions since they all seem to continue to put lives at risk and not work to stop the spread of the virus.

It's wonderful that your country has it so under control. I surely wish it was the same here. :(

  3. Yay for fabulous news and I'm so glad you work for such a caring company who offers you the ability to WFH. That's been a game changer with my husband's employer too, we're so grateful for that ability. I have the Field Party Series sitting on my shelf, I need to go check out your review for that book!

    1. My company has been great. They actually stayed closed for another month even after the mayor lifted the stay at home order. And the steps they're taking now are making everyone feel a lot better. It's great that your husband's company is taking it seriously, too.

  4. I think it's smart to keep people WFH, if the job can be done that way, until we have a vaccine. At my job, they have to wear masks all the time, even at their desks, and they are seated 8 feet apart. Personally, I think it was mistake to reopen bars. Who will social distance at a place they go to for social interaction? Come on! I raise my glass with you on the good news! It's always nice to get good news.

    1. The bars reopening was just insane. I mean, what did they think was going to happen? *bangs head against wall*

  5. I wish you are choosing the WFH too, if possible. I hope the numbers fall down soon, things are really scary now.

  6. I LOVE THIS SONG!

So far our reopening has been okay in New Jersey. The numbers are staying low, so we'll see what the next few weeks bring. I'm glad your office is being flexible.

  7. AZ is continuing to have record-setting numbers of positive COVID-19 cases too. Our governor should not have opened up our state so soon. He also left it up to the mayors to enforce the wearing of masks which they did but people are stupid and they are not wearing them. They need to lock down the state again in my opinion. Re-opening bars and dining rooms was a bad call.

Luckily, our office never re-opened. Our management team has decided to keep us all working from home until they see a change in the number of positive cases going down. Which with the way things are going I'm thinking probably won't happen until September.

    1. I wish they would lock down my state again, too, but it won't happen. The governor has already said that he won't do it because it's "taking a step backward." Ugh.

That's great that your company is being so safe and continuing to work from home!

  8. Florida cases have blown up!! Scary! I would work from home forever if it was possible. Teaching from home was hard, but so much safer for everyone.
Congrats on the good news that eased your minds! Thats always welcome during these trying times.

    1. They really have. And leadership has been so sketchy and very "we're just going to count on people to do the right thing." Uh, how's that working for you? Ugh. With all its challenges (and I'm sure there were many) at least teaching from home was safe!

  9. Yay for working from home and good news! My brother lives in Florida and keeps trying to feed me the GOP narrative but has also had to backtrack on that this week. I wish I were wrong but I don't think it will get better soon with people being stupid about masks and some openings too soon, not to mention no effort or plan by the federal govt. ~end rant I want to get In a Holidaze on audio and review it in December. Stay safe and well!

    1. Oh my goodness, I am so sick of hearing that line: "It's just because there's more testing being done." (I'm sure you've heard it, too.) Some just refuse to admit that appropriate action wasn't taken and now it's out of control. Today - finally - the mayor has ordered that masks are mandatory county-wide in public when social-distancing is not possible. Hopefully it will help.

  10. Happy to hear you're able to work from home now that cases are on the rise again. Glad to hear you got some much needed good news!

Curious about Holidaze. I wasn't keen on their last book, so I want to hear reactions before I commit. That may backfire because I did that with Josh & Hazel and waited long, missed the opportunity to get an ARC and everyone loved it. I ended up loving it too!

    1. I actually have been disappointed in the last two books from Christina Lauren. So I'm wary on In a Holidaze but hopeful that it will wow me like some of their previous ones have. Like Josh & Hazel. :)

  11. We are not yet allowed to go to the office but we already know that break rooms will be closed and that we will have to wear a mask every time we'd leave our desk. Stay safe Tanya as I am thinking of you while reading Florida's statistics!

  12. When I look at the reopenings many states have been open for almost a couple months (at least the first stages) so I just look at what has been happening lately but I think there are a combination of factors involved...like more tests available, the protests (where thousands are gathering in every state)so I don't think the reopening is to blame for it all. Especially if you look at some states which are still closed down for the most part but numbers are still rising like L.A. for example. Like where I live our numbers have been rising a lot but only within the past week or two so I think its due to what has been happening lately. But that is just my view from the information I have received. I could be wrong...I just try to be safe and careful but determined to live life to the fullest as best as I can without putting others in harm way like washing hands, face coverings and social distancing whenever possible.

So happy to see you received some happy news....you deserve to do some celebrating.

    1. Unfortunately my state was one of the last to lock down and one of the first to reopen. And without strong measures, people have refused to take this seriously. It's much worse in south Florida (the positive rate in Miami is now well over 15%) but my city is definitely on the rise. It's pretty concerning.

  13. It's scary how cases are climbing. We did a good job here in WA of flattening ou curve, but then started opening up again and cases are rising. It's terrible. :( I'm glad you have the option to work from home again. And that you got good news to celebrate.

    1. Yeah, things seemed to be going in the right direction but then when things reopened people seemed to interpret that as "hey, it's over and safe now!" Here in Florida the governor waited too long to lock down. And then reopened way too soon (including the beaches which were packed with spring breakers). It's so frustrating.

  15. Yeah, I've heard Florida is kind of backtracking on opening up. Not that you're the only state. Governors went way too quick and people are just selfish and dumb, so it's a mix of things. LOL I'm glad your work lets people WFH voluntarily still, since many are probably nervous to go in. Yay for good personal news for you and your husband!

    1. Exactly, our governor waited so long to lock the state down - and then was one of the first to reopen. Gotta open those beaches for all the visitors! (Who either bring the virus with them or take it home with them.) It makes you want to just bang your head against a wall.

  16. My grandpa lives in Florida, and I’m super worried about him. He’s pretty healthy, but he’s in his 90s, so he’s high risk. I’m glad he doesn’t go out very often. I’m glad you got some good news. I hope you have a great week!

  17. Congrats on your good news🥂

The numbers out of Florida are terrifying, especially since it’s widely known the govt are suppressing numbers so the stats are much worse than they seem.

Stay safe, wishing you a great reading week

  18. I'm glad to hear your employer is being proactive and letting people work from home again. It definitely seems to be safest way to do things. I just saw a map of the U.S. this morning that showed even the states that had previously been reporting declining cases had now either plateaued or had started to climb again. Scary times. I'm glad to hear you and the hubby had some good news to celebrate. Hope you have a great week!

  19. I'm back to working from home after about a month of being back. We've had some positive cases amongst our co-workers, and our state continues to see cases rapidly rise too. I've been in direct contact with someone who tested positive, so I'll be in self quarantine for the next couple of weeks just to be safe.

I'm glad you two have something to celebrate! We can use all the good news right now!

  20. Glad you guys got good news! Yay!!! And I hear you on the spiking virus cases- it feels like we're almost back where we started from. So frustrating. Glad to hear your office is doing the voluntary WFH though. I know a lot of companies are doing the right thing but some aren't as well, I know some around here that aren't, so I'm glad yours at least cares enough about their workers.

I was thinking the Mall sounded kinda good!

  24. They decided to open our pubs, restaurants etc this weekend. It's going to be a disaster... At least your company is giving people the option to go back to WFH. My company thinks we'll be pretty much 40/60 spilt between office and home until after Christmas (and that's without a second spike). :/

Glad you got some good news in the middle of all this mess! Whatever it was, definitely worth celebrating. All the small victories and happy things are. :)
