I switched up this morning's activity and the best that I can say is: I survived. The Husband and I go for a walk each morning, leaving the house by about 6:15 so that (1) I can get back in time to get ready and get logged on to work by 8:00, and (2) because that's the only time of day that is not miserably hot. This morning I just couldn't face the sticky humidity outside and decided to do a workout through my WW app instead. Feeling quite clever, I chose a low intensity (*cough* liars *cough*) cardio workout and immediately stopped feeling so clever. I made it through... kind of... but suddenly my outdoor walk in the humidity doesn't seem so bad. :)

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Currently reading: I decided to take part in Maureen's book club this month and I picked up this month's book, Virgin River. I've never read anything by Carr before and I'm discovering that her style isn't really my thing. (She apparently writes romances that are on the sweet side and if I read the word "fanny" one more time I will gag.) But the story is interesting enough and it's been fun to chat about it on Maureen's book club Facebook page.
Current progress: page 273/398 (68%)

Currently listening: Wham! was one of my favorite groups in the 80's and I continued to follow George Michael's solo career for many years. He was such a gifted songwriter and his voice was simply amazing. I'm really enjoying listening to Andrew (he narrates the book himself) recount their early days and their journey to success.
Current progress: 52%

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

Read: Blood To Dust was a wild ride. These were some twisted people who did some messed up stuff and didn't feel bad about it. There came a point where it all started to feel a little too over the top but overall it was an entertaining read, if a bit dark.

Listened to: American Queen was quite a ride. Spanning many years, it was easy to get immersed in the story and I found myself listening to it every chance I got. It felt a bit long (even though I checked and the printed book is only 400 pages) and Simone seemed to take a long time to build up to the actual story, but that's a minor quibble. It ended on a cliffhanger and I will definitely be continuing on with the trilogy.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU"LL READ NEXT?

What comes next is up in the air, as always, but I'm thinking I might read a physical copy of The Girl in the Love Song and listen to American Prince.

What are you currently reading?
I wanna know! :)

  1. Great job making it through your workout!
I read that Virgin River series back when I first started reading romance and loved it. After reading more NA books and newer romances, it's hard to read her books for me. I started her Thunder River series and gave part way through, so I think I get what you're saying about it.
I am SUPER curious about that Wham book! I love(d) their music and am so curious about it. I hadn't seen it before. I think I need to see if my library has it.

    1. I know Robyn Carr is incredibly popular but it's just a personal taste thing. I don't think her books are for me. But it's fun to take part in the group read and try something new.

I'm really enjoying the Wham! book. It's so interesting getting to hear about their start and the dynamic between them.

  2. Does it just make you want to kick someone in the fanny when they use the word fanny? 😂 I couldn't resist. There are a few of those really well known romance authors, who just have not worked for me. I read one last year by Debbie Macomber and it just was not for me.

    1. LOL Yes, actually it does. :) Yeah, I think maybe Robyn Carr just isn't for me. I've never tried Macomber but I feel like she probably falls in line with Carr.

  3. I just read Me byt Elton John and now I'm listening to Daisy Jones & the Six so I have that whole - Behind the Music reading vibe going on so Wham caught my eye.

  4. I like going for walks early in the morning before work, too, although for the past couple weeks, it has been too hot even to do that!

    1. I agree. Even in the morning it's already hot plus 100% humidity. Yuck!

    1. The book was interesting... so much attention on their very early days before Wham! was even formed.

  6. It makes me SO happy to see you enjoying the Camelot Trilogy and continuing on with it. Its definitely a wild ride for sure. Hope you enjoy that ride :)

Hope you are enjoying your week and love those morning walks :)

  7. I love taking walks in the morning but it has been pretty miserable here the past couple of weeks too. Even though we're walking at a leisurely pace, I've been just drenched in sweat by the time I get back to the house. I hate to wish summer away but I'll be glad for some cooler weather.

    1. You and me both, Suzanne. I remember taking walk back in March/April when I first started WFH and it felt fabulous outside. I want that back. :)

  8. I don't mind the word fanny, but it does sound like something one of my grandmas would've said. The other (my favorite one) would've said "arse" lol! I do love the Virgin River series, so I'm sorry to hear her writing didn't work for you. It happens. Not every author will work for every reader.

Hope you get lower humidity so your walks won't be miserable. It's supposed to be 112 degrees here this weekend! Nooo!!! I hate the heat. I'm ready for summer to be done. Now, please!

    1. Exactly, Rachel! It just sounded so dated and out of place. I get that Carr writes more on the sweet side of romance (no explicit scenes, language, etc) but I guess it just didn't totally work for me. But like you said, not every author is for every reader.

  9. Ugh yes. I feel you on walking in this heat and humidity. It's the worst. If you want some really low-impact workouts, I recommend Team Body Project on YouTube. I love them!
I need to pick up that Sierra Simone series. I've heard that it's wild but super entertaining. :D I do get in the mood for those from time-to-time. Happy reading!

  10. What a nightmare, you think you're being sneaky and getting a little bit of nice calm exercise in and then you are betrayed by it being a way tougher workout! I suppose now you know the walk is always better, at least you can set the pace on it. And you're reading Virgin River? I quite enjoyed it but I will say there were parts of the book which didn't work for me. I only read it because I'd enjoyed the cheesiness of the Netflix show (I think i preferred the show).

    1. I've seen several people say they preferred the show over the book. I'm not a TV watcher so I can't compare but the books was just okay for me. I enjoyed it but it wasn't anything memorable.

  11. Ah Wham, they were the best, Last Christmas is still my favourite festive song. I might check this out, I’m sure it makes an interesting read.

  12. Good on you for changing things up and sticking to your commitment! We've been using the heat as an excuse to slack off this week, but you've inspired me to keep at it!

I'm glad you survived your switched up morning workout. I'm ready for Fall for many reasons, but one being the cooler weather so I can get out and moving more (at least more easily since all this heat is not great when you have lung problems lol).

  14. It's funny how something like a specific word sticks out when you are reading. I do love the Virgin River books but I struggle with other books by her.

  15. LOL on the workout. I hear ya with the low intensity liars! LJ Shen can certainly do drama and she loves to hang around the fence with being over the top. Glad you enjoyed it. And glad that American Queen was good enough to move onto the next book. I'm curious to see how you'll feel about the series overall.

    1. This morning I finally found a low intensity workout on Amazon Prime video that really was low intensity. Hallelujah! lol I'm halfway into American Prince now and I can't even imagine what's next.

  16. HAHAHA! 🤣 I also dislike it when the word "fanny" is overused in a romance! Really... any context in which "fanny" plays a prominent role.

    1. Yeah, the word fanny was a total turn-off. And the main character said "boy howdy" several times and I was like, really? People actually say boy howdy? lol

  17. Oh dear... I really struggle with the word "fanny" in books because in the UK it has a very different meaning to the US! 😂 Once in a book, I can autocorrect it in my head and move on, more than a couple and I'm broken.

    1. I just Googled what fanny means in British slang and... yeah, I can see why the word used in U.S. books would catch your attention every time. LOL
