The Firsts of 2023 Book Tag

I saw Dini do this tag a few days ago and it looked like fun.
And it's been ages since I've done a tag.
This book tag was originally created by Tanya @girlxoxo.

Let's get started... 😎

FIRST BOOK READ THIS YEAR

The first book I completed this year was Dark Room Etiquette (although, technically, I started it the last day or two of December). Having read Roe's A List of Cages, I knew it would be emotional, but it delivered even more of a gut punch than I expected.

FIRST BOOK REVIEWED

I believe the first review I wrote this year was for Drake, the fifth entry in the Pittsburgh Titans series. And coincidentally, I'm about to dive into book number eight.

FIRST BOOK BY A DEBUT AUTHOR

No reads by a debut author so far this year.

FIRST BOOK BY A NEW-TO-ME AUTHOR

The first new-to-me author I read this year was Abby Jimenez. I read Part of Your World in January.

FIRST BOOK THAT SLAYED ME

That honor goes to Heart Recaptured. It delivered all the feels and then some.

FIRST BOOK THAT I WISH I COULD GET THE TIME BACK THAT I SPENT READING IT

It pains me to say it, but this one goes to Right Man, Right Time. It took me over two weeks to get through it and my dislike for the heroine grew as I read. After 2+ weeks, I was so ready to be done with her.

Have you read any of these books?
What was one of your firsts this year?

  1. It's so frustrating when you don't like one of the main characters. I had to power through a historical romance because I needed to leave a review.

    1. Alicia - I'm such a character-based reader that it's like a death knoll to a book if I dislike a main character.

  2. You are flying through those Titians books. I just saw my Hoopla got some on audio. I hope to listen to them soon.

    1. Sam - Yep, I do love that Titan series. Something about those characters and Bennett's portrayal of the team just clicks with me. :) I've listened to most on audio and loved going that route. The most recent ones, though. Bennett seems to only be releasing on her website for sale. Boo.

  3. I love that Abby Jimenez was a new to you author you loved. I'm sad that Quinn book didn't work out for you, but I understand.

    1. Deanna - I think I got lucky with the first few that I read by Quinn, but finally learned that overall her humor and her characters just aren't my cup of tea.

  10. At some point I'd like to read Part of Your World. I don't think I could read Dark Room Etiquette. It sounds too intense and dark for me. I'd like to get to that Bennett series.

    1. Rachel - Dark Room Etiquette was very intense. A powerful read. But it's not one I want to revisit. The Sawyer Bennett series is a really good one!

  15. Oh this is fun! I need to read Dark Room Etiquette, it sounds so good! And I love an emotional book. I have not read any of the others, either! My first book of the year.... no idea, let's ask Goodreads! Vampire Weekend by Mike Chen, and it was a good one! It's, oddly enough, a very wholesome and heartwarming Vampire family story heh.

    1. Shannon - I'm kicking myself because I still haven't read anything by Mike Chen. I need to make that happen!
