The Sunday Post #212

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's a chance to share news - a post to recap the past week on your blog,
showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is
coming up on your blog in the week ahead. You can find the info here:

  • It was a busy week at the office with more people returning. It was still a fraction of normal but the official return date for all is tomorrow (June 15) so it will be interesting to have everyone back in the office. I've kind of become accustomed to it being mostly empty so it will be strange to see people in the halls again.
  • On the downside, COVID infections in Florida spiked this week and for the last three days there have been single-day records for new confirmed cases. There were over 2,500 confirmed positives on Friday alone. It's a pretty unsettling trend and makes me wonder if the return to the office may be short-lived.
  • It was announced this week that the Republican National Convention will be held in my city in August. Which sounds like the Worst Idea Ever. Thousands upon thousands of visitors from across the country, swarming into the city, and gathering in numbers of approximately 15,000. If the infection rate is spiking now, I can see it skyrocketing in August. A lot of people here are dismayed by the mayor's push to bring the RNC here.
  • This week's 80's music fix is Everyday I Write the Book (1983) by Elvis Costello. He never seemed to make a big splash in the U.S. but I always thought he was such a talented lyricist.

WHAT I COMPLETED IN THE LAST WEEK:
WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING:

PHYSICAL BOOKS:

I pre-ordered this one back in February, even though I already had the eARC. Armentrout is one of those authors that I love to support by buying physical copies of her books.

KINDLE BOOKS:

How was your week? Any new books? Any news to share?
I'd love to hear about it!

  1. I hope the reopening of your office goes well. And I heard that about Florida cases too. I think we're definitely going to see some spikes as things open back up. Let's hope it doesn't get too bad. I just shook my head when I read about the convention. Stay safe!!

    I liked Elvis Costello.

2021 lol- that made me smile. :)

    1. Yeah, the convention is just... shocking. And shows that city officials are more concerned with money than public safety. :(

  2. Elvis Costello is a very talented songwriter and musician.

  3. I will never understand why Nickelback is the butt of so many jokes. I wasn't ever a fan, but they had many. I love Elvis Costello, and that song is such a classic. Your building is allowed to be at capacity? We still have restrictions on how many may gather indoors. That's one of the reasons my company is not rushing to bring people back. The rumor is maybe the end of summer, and that we will come back in shifts. Who knows!

    1. Oddly enough, once the WFH restrictions were lifted, there was no real limit placed on work places. Which is weird considering people are in close proximity there just like in stores, restaurants, etc. Thankfully, our CEO and the rest of the Board continue to enforce safety measures. No guests in the building without Board approval, no in-person meetings, etc. But if the infection continues to rise here, we may all be back to WFH!

  4. We've been watching the spikes in FL - it's scary! Now that everything is starting to open up a bit in NJ, it makes me wonder what will happen here,

  5. Ugh. I have a feeling your work from the office won't be going on long the way things are going. Parts of WA are still going strong, too. I just wish people would have taken it more seriously and stayed home earlier. But I'll hope for the best. At least you had a good reading week!

    1. I thinks so, too, Deanna. If the upward trend of infections keeps up, we may all be back to WFH.

  6. New Nickleback?!?!? The horror!!!!! I read about the spike in Fl. It is crazy to think that at this point, it will get worse with all the people coming to the convention. Hopefully fewer will attend? We can hope so.

    1. Seriously, locusts? Ack! That's one I could definitely do without!

  8. I wish you luck with the office opening. I am sure it is too soon because people aren't following safe procedures. I wasn't sorry to see the convention leave NC for FL. Having it with swarms of people is stupid. Sorry but it is. I hope things won't get worse but they are and no plans or procedures are in place to keep it under control. SMH I think the good companies are continuing or will have another round of WFH.

    Happy reading and stay well!

    1. I so agree, Anne. Having a gathering of thousands of people isn't just risky at this point, it's downright foolish. I wish our mayor was as forward thinking at the mayor of Charlotte!

  9. Yeah, it seems like there are rises in the infection rates all over the place. So much for the heat and the sun killing off the virus, right? As for the R-convention, wow, really smart move. The second wave might be coming sooner than they predicted. Super fun! Hope you stay safe at your workplace.

    1. LOL So true, Rachel. Trump can test his sun & heat theory when he comes to Florida in the middle of summer. *rolls my eyes*

  10. I think with everything going on, there is going to be a rise in the virus. Its going to happen sooner or later, I just want to get it over with. I just wash my hands, social distance best I can and wear a face covering whenever I am in closed spaces or close to others.

I like to do that with authors too though, if I get an ARC and love it enough and want to support the author, I purchase it when it gets released. Especially if its a book I know I will want to read again.

Hope you have a great week, stay safe happy and healthy.

    1. There are a handful of authors that I just prefer to own physical copies of their books. Maybe I'll read them again... maybe not... but I love seeing them on my shelves. :)

  11. OMG Tanya yes that seems a very bad idea! And the return to the office might indeed be short lived! I hope you take precautiosn there like wearing a mask, washing hands etc. Now related to your meme: yes I hope 2021 will see a new Nickelback album LOL But way better than their last that I loathed!

    1. The return to the office has been good. I've been in the office for two weeks now, and most others returned this week. Hopefully everyone will be smart and cautious and continue to practice good safety measures.

  12. Wow, that's a terrifying thought of so many people in one place and in you town as well. You would think they would postpone something like that or make it digital. I know some restrictions are being eased but such a large gathering? That's unnecessary. Sorry to hear the return to some normality has also coincided with an increased infection rate, that's certainly not fun. Fingers crossed it's s small spike and goes back down. Also, I love Elvis Costello so good song choice.

    1. I get that the RNC and DNC conventions are huge but these are also not normal times. It seems beyond reckless to still hold them when we are still in the pandemic. It boggles my mind.

  13. That is so scary. We have some relaxing of our rigid laws.

  14. I was just reading about the spike in cases in Florida. That scares me since more and more states are starting to open up. Feels like we're going to start a second wave before the first wave ever finishes. My office is reopening on a voluntary basis today but I'm not going yet. We have a few rebels who have apparently been refusing to wear the masks the few times they've gone in so I'm not excited about rejoining them until I know they are complying.

    1. I'm with you, Suzanne, I wouldn't be in a rush to go back, either. Especially if people aren't going to be safe about it.

  15. Yeah, I've heard cases are going up a lot in Florida - and other states too. It's very scary, and it just shows that opening things up as much as we have probably isn't a good idea. But it's also all the people out there who just decided Covid no longer exists. lol That's crazy about the RNC. I wouldn't want all those people in my city either - cases will skyrocket for sure!!! I hope everything goes well at work today, with everybody back.

    1. Thanks Alison. Despite everyone seemingly returning to their old ways, we're carrying on as normal, staying home, wearing masks on the rare trip out, and staying safe.

  17. The "New Nickleback Album" made me laugh! Yes, yes, and yes. I don't understand why people are acting like the pandemic is over, because it's not! It's only getting worse. Stay-at-home orders managed to flatten the curve, but with everyone reopening and not taking the proper precautions, we're seeing a serious uptick in the number of reported cases (imagine how many people have it and either a) don't know or b) don't have the means to be tested).

I really hate that Trump is more concerned with his ratings and rallies than the deaths over 100,000 people. They say the number will double by September. I just cannot with the RNC wanting to gather THOUSANDS of people together. What is it going to take for people to take this seriously?

    1. Yeah, the RNC coming here is just... mind-boggling. I mean, seriously, how can that be a good idea? How can that many people gathering *anywhere* be a good idea? I think we can all predict what will happen a couple weeks after the RNC in August. :(

  19. I knew you were in Florida but didn't realize you're in the same city as the RNC. Yikes! I can totally understand why you're nervous and frustrated about that. I live in Illinois, so I knew there was no chance Trump would want to come here. LOL!

    1. Ha! Yeah, I guess he knew better than to go there. Wish the same could be said for my city/state. It's pretty disheartening to see $$ placed ahead of public health and safety.

  22. It is so scary how COVZD infections are spreading everywhere like wildfire, and there's so many people out there that think it's a hoax or the government’s way of trying to control people. My brother-in-laws uncle recently died from it, and my cousin just had a stroke recently and died after his whole family became infected with it. If it Some people need it to effect them personally before they will understand and take it seriously. I would be concerned about the RNC coming to your city. Let's hope it falls through. Stay safe, Tanya :)

    1. Yeah, the RNC things seems to be a done deal. It's coming. Ugh. It just seems like such an irresponsible move and experts on the local news are sharing worst-case scenarios which is pretty scary. And for what? Yes, money may pour in to the local economy, but at what cost?

  23. We are all still working from home here. My husbands work talked about possibly July with a phase in lasting a few weeks, but they haven't mentioned it lately as cases in our county rise even though the state as a whole is seeing a decline. Yeah,I would not want all those people arriving in my town. I am surprised since I thought Florida still had the quarantine in place for 14 days for new arrivals.

    ReplyDelete

    1. There was a "voluntary quarantine" for those arriving from NY back in March/April but even then it wasn't enforced. I mean. who was going to police that? And now it just feels like anything goes. It's like, virus? What virus? Gah!

  24. My work office is reopening slowly. I think I'll be one day a week until September when the schools are expected to go back. (i.e. after summer break.) Even though we're returning slowly, it was MUCH busier this week than it was when I did a day in office a couple of weeks ago so I fear it's only a matter of time before we're surging back to normal heedless of second spikes. *Sigh.* The government seems determined to have almost all business back open in some capacity by July... I just wonder what the autumn/winter seasons will bring. I mean, normal coughs, colds and flus abound then never mind covid!

People need to remember that this isn't over for a scary number of people seem to have 'forgotten'.

Hope the mass return to office wasn't too bad this week for you... I'll check back in tomorrow for the update! :)

    1. The push to reopen quickly seems almost universal. I get that we can't stay shuttered in our homes forever, but so many are intent on returning to normal no matter the cost. It's scary.
