The Sunday Post #200

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's a chance to share news - a post to recap the past week on your blog,
showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is
coming up on your blog in the week ahead. You can find the info here:

  • So is everyone else's days feeling more and more surreal? Businesses shutting their doors, food shortages, restaurants and malls closed... it's so strange. People are fearful, not knowing what's coming next or how bad it's going to get. And then there are the idiots who are carrying on as usual, gathering together, as if they - and everyone around them - are invincible. As if this is all one big vacation. Those people make me ragey.
  • The Husband and I went to the Commissary yesterday (the grocery store on the Navy base where we do our shopping). They were opening at 9 AM and we got there a little early thinking it might be crowded. We arrived to a line of about 150 people, snaking all along the front of the building waiting to get in. They were checking every person's ID - no visitors/guests allowed inside. Most everything was well stocked, but there were also limits in place. We kept our distance from people as much as possible, but one woman actually put her hand on my back to move around me and I thought I was going to lose it. First, even under normal circumstances, don't touch me. Personal space, people. But now... seriously? Gah!
  • It's funny how quickly your thought process can shift when there is a change in the norm. Without being conscious of it, I've found myself reaching for the fresh foods at home first, saving the pantry and frozen items for later. I'm conserving more because any waste seems foolish and dangerous.
  • The Husband and I are both working from home and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I'm working in our home office and he is set up in the dining room. We meet up for lunch every day in the employee break room (formerly known as the kitchen). In other exciting news, Robert was named Employee of the Week. (It still counts if I was the only one voting, right?) Fingers crossed that I get that honor next week. :)
  • We are self-isolating as much as possible and not leaving the house unless necessary. I keep seeing jokes about couple losing it because of the forced proximity, but there's no one else I'd rather be cooped up with. All this togetherness is the one bonus in this situation. It's like I get to see my best friend all day, every day and that's pretty awesome.
  • We went to check on my mom Friday night and took dinner with us. We had a picnic on her driveway - about 10 feet apart. It was kind of bizarre and pitiful - but also necessary now. No way will I risk her health.
  • For this week's 80's music fix: I was going to skip my 80's song this week but you know what, I need a little lift now more than ever. This one is actually from 1978, not the 80's, but whatever.

WHAT I COMPLETED IN THE LAST WEEK:
WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING:

Not a thing. I'm finding it hard to concentrate on reading or audio books. If I do pick something up you better believe it will be the lightest, fluffiest, happiest book ever written. I can not handle angst right now. Ugh.

KINDLE BOOKS:

How was your week? Any new books? Any news to share?
I'd love to hear about it!

  1. You two crazy kids just being couple of the year. Adorably sweet! Glad you are able to hunker down. I am trying to get my mother to use the food we have better. She always makes too much, and she was like, I will throw away the rest, and I told her NOPE. Need to use what we have. I hope things start getting better. I hate being so far away from my child, and not knowing when/if I will see her again.

    1. I think it's hard for some to make changes and grasp that things are different for now. But what surprises me is that it's often older people/seniors who seem to want to carry on as usual. The 20-somethings I expect, but the older ones? I'm so sorry you're separated from Kiersten now. I wish she could be with you. {{hugs}}

  2. I feel like you read my mind every week with these songs! I have to smile at the way you and your hubby are handling all this together - the employee break room, LOL! You guys are too cute.

    1. Gotta keep a sense of humor... otherwise I'd freak out and worry 24/7. LOL

  3. My husband and I are both currently still going to the office. My work may end up closing but I am not sure. I think it is great that both of you are able to work from home right now. I have found in my area to avoid the opening moments at the stores since that is when they seem to be the most crowded. We went to several stores in the evening and afternoon with very few crowds. I hope to be able to stay home for a long while now though. I love that you had dinner with your mom from a distance. I brought food to my mom but kept myself from getting too close. Have a great week and stay safe!

    1. Sorry to hear that you're both still having to go into the office, Carole. I hope that changes soon. It's crazy the steps we have to take to be safe but I'm more than willing t do them if it means this ends sooner.

  4. Sounds like y'all are managing quarantine really well. I'm rooting for you to get employee of the week next week. 😉

If my husband's job would shut down I think I'd feel a lot better. At the moment he still had to work, which is far from ideal. Especially because he works with some people who really aren't taking it seriously. I'm very anxious and hopeful for this to be over soon.

    1. It's so frustrating when you know you're doing all you can and taking precautions but the people around you (or your husband) aren't. :(

  5. I'm enjoying time at home with my family too. And trying not to be paranoid about random "symptoms". LOL!

  6. I love how well you and your hubby are managing, together. My vote is for you for next week if that helps any.

Wishing you a great reading week, be well!

  7. I know what you mean when you talk about people carrying on as if nothing was happening. It makes me mad too Tanya! Please stay safe.

  8. I'm glad you are being so sensible and having a good attitude. I'm totally with you on the fresh first. I have noticed my daughter is being much less wasteful and eating her leftovers. I didn't say anything but she is getting it. My parents were raised during the depression so I have been brought up with those instincts. I think that's why it is so hard to get rid of anything since I might need it.

Have a healthy week and enjoy some great reads!

  9. I love that your hubby was employee of the week from your work from home jobs! So cute! I do think that people are either crazy hoarders or ignorant idiots hanging out on the beach. The reasonable people seem to be in the minority. Strange times for sure!

    1. OMG those spring breaker that were down in south Florida? Well, they thought they were so invincible and now they're testing positive. So valuable resources are being used to treat them all because they just had to party. Grrr. It's so frustrating.

  10. Ugh. This stuff going on totally sucks. My daughter and I are at home. My husband is working from home as much as possible. I want them to tell us we have to stay home legally. Hoping that's coming soon here in Washington state. I love that you gave your husband that award! Stay safe and healthy!

    1. It really does suck. And it everyone would take it seriously and stay at home when they're able to maybe it would end sooner. It's crazy when I see people carrying on as usual like they're invincible.

  11. Things are definitely surreal! I am working from home, but mom is retired, and though essentially nothing has changed from her schedule, she is having a hard time adjusting to me being home. Mostly she just wants to ask me questions a lot, so she stands in the doorway until I acknowledge her so she can ask me questions.
I'm only leaving for grocery shopping as needed, but my brother and SIL are still going in to work each day, so there's still a chance of it being brought into the house, though they are trying to be as careful as possible not to bring it home.
I'm still getting some reading done, but nowhere near my usual level.

    1. LOL Sounds like you're both still adjusting to you working from home. I'm sure she enjoys the company.

  12. Aw, I love that you had a picnic on your mom's driveway. That's great you and your husband are doing okay being cooped up together and working from home. It's a lot for my mental health sometimes, but so far, I'm doing well and that's the main thing. I just need this weather to get a bit better so I'm not stuck IN the house 24/7. It would be nice to just be on the porch and read sometimes, you know? haha

  13. It is TOTALLY surreal. And that woman putting her hand on your back- seriously? lol that would piss me off too I think! Hello persona space for sure- especially NOW! Wow. And the morning lines kill me *eye roll*

That is so awesome you guys both being able to work from home. And enjoying the togetherness. I feel the same way. It's kind of baffling to me when people say oh no I gotta be home with my loved ones? Um... really lol?

    Queen! Excellent choice :)

  16. Glad to hear you and your hubby are enjoying the work from home thing! It was kind of a shake your head kind of thing when I saw all those college kids partying it up on the beaches. I hope they don't pay dearly for the stupidity. Happy reading and stay safe, Tanya! :)

    1. Isn't that crazy, Rachel. The young seem to think they are invincible and don't think their actions could impact more than just them. So frustrating.

  17. A big yes to feeling ragey at everyone who isn't taking this situation seriously and to those who keep getting in my space every time I do go out. It's taking everything in me not to yell at people. I do love that you and your hubby are making the most of your time together and actually sound like you're having fun. That is definitely a bright spot and it made me smile to read it.

  18. Tee time design is totally accurate. So, as employee of the week, will you get to take cuts to the front of the bathroom line? :P I'm also feeling super ragey to those who won't just STAY HOME so we can get through this with as little loss as possible. And then feeling guilty when hubs stops for groceries (once so far).

    1. LOL I didn't think about front-of-the-line bathroom privileges. I'll have to take advantage of that. :) So right, Becki, a little sacrifice now would end this quicker for all of us.

  19. You're right about it changing our thinking on food! I have been pushing leftovers on everyone not wanting to waste anything. So glad your store was fully stocked!! My mom drove around to 5 different stores Saturday trying to find everything we both needed and still only got some of the list. And I can imagine how you felt when someone touched you. I was ready to lose it watching someone touch a thousand can goods they weren't putting in their cart. My husband is an essential worker but his hours have been cut from 12hr days to 8hr days, so it's felt like we're getting a lot more time together. I'm like you, though, in that it makes me happy.

    1. Yep, I've become much more conscious of using what we have, using it all up before opening something else, etc. Not a bad habit to develop. I'm so thankful for all those essential workers, like your husband. I'm glad he's able to be home more, though.

  20. I live in a very small town and things are not crowded at all. We run low on things but most of it is quickly restocked - except toilet paper of course lol

We stay far apart and we're like wild animals - if we get to close coming around a corner in an isle or something we all jump back.

I loved your IG photo the other day. So beautiful.

    1. Well naturally no toilet paper. LOL

It's been nice to be able to take these daily walks together. Once in the morning, once in the afternoon/evening. We come across others on our walks but it seems like everyone is on-board with keeping distance. Thank goodness.

  22. It is funny how our thinking changes I've been reaching for what's in the fridge first also, and been using leftovers for multiple meals. I'm on board with light and fluffy right now too, and feel the same anger over the people who are not taking this threat seriously. I've stayed inside, and am being as careful as possible.

  23. I'm WFH completely now too and so is the professor! He was deemed a critical worker at one point but when our government pretty much announced complete lock down on Monday he was told to stay home like the rest of us, for what looks like 3 weeks, then it'll be reassessed. It's insane and very scary but I'm so glad he's home with us too.

I haven't dared leave the house for food shopping yet and I'm not sure I will... We have enough supplies until our booked food order slot (6th April!) so if I can avoid it, I will. The queues are nuts and if someone touches me I'd lose it. I admire your restraint with the touchy lady! You're a better person than me, lol.

    1. Glad your husband is home now. I'm so relieved that both me and my husband can stay at home during this. We went out last weekend and stocked us best we could on groceries and essentials. I think we'll be good for a while longer, thankfully. I have no desire to brave the stores again for a while. But not knowing how long this will last is so unnerving.
