THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Last Sunday The Husband and I went to the theater and saw Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. (Fun fact: The last time I saw a movie in a theater was in 2018.) The movie was so sweet and funny and nostalgic. I love that it was set in 1970 and they didn't try to modernize it. What's funny is that there were maybe 6-8 other people in that particular theater and they were all my age or older. Apparently we all remember Judy's books fondly. (Oh! Judy had a very tiny cameo and it thrilled me.) Anyone else feel like Judy Blume's books defined their childhood? 😊
It was a busy week at the office and I was so wiped out that I went to bed at 8 PM two nights. I regret nothing.
I have discovered the Dunkin vanilla bean Coolatta. Basically a vanilla-flavored slushie. I think I have found my drink of the summer. I am addicted.
Happy Mother's Day to those who celebrate. If Mother's Day is a difficult day for you, I hope you're able to spend that day in a way that is good for you. My sisters and I took my mom out to lunch yesterday and meanwhile The Husband was putting together the recumbent exercise bike that we'd bought for her. Soon it's going to be too hot for her daily walks, so this way she can stay inside with the AC and still get some activity. She's mentioned wanting one several times and seemed pretty happy to finally have one.
This week's 80's throwback is One in a Million (1983) by The Romantic. Enjoy!

NEW ADDITIONS
Not a thing.
Oh I love that Romantics song! It's been a bit since I've heard it. when I hear the Romantics it's usually What I Like About You but I think I like this one even more.
ReplyDeleteGreg - What I Like About You is a fun one. I remember Talking in Your Sleep when I think about The Romantics.
DeleteYes that one too lol!!!!!!!!
DeleteWow! I am so impressed they didn't modernize Margaret. That's awesome! It was ahead of its time anyhow. What a great gift for your mom. It's awesome that she is still so active. The hair in the 80s was something.
ReplyDeleteSam - It really was ahead of its time, as were a lot of Blume's books. She covered so many themes that otherwise weren't talked about.
DeleteA Dunkin drink. You and Ben Affleck, smile. Enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a new favorite drink. :)
DeleteHow fun to see Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and enjoyed the way they handled the book! Wow, back in 2018? I don't think I've been very many times since then either. I rarely went even before Covid, but I end up going with the grandkids and the last movie we saw was The Mario Bros movie. Can't say I'd recommend it, lol, but the kids liked it so it was a win. What a nice gift for your mom! It's hard to get out and exercise when it's so hot, not to mention dangerous, so that's such a thoughtful gift.
ReplyDeleteLooks like getting back to Abbi Glines wasn't such a hit. That totally random is so true, haha!
Rachel - Initially I avoided the theater due to Covid (avoiding crowds) but I also found that there wasn't much being released that interested me. I'd rather read. :)
DeleteOh I know the me that buys the groceries is a different me! I say the same thing about the me that packs my lunch and the me that eats my lunch. I'm glad you enjoyed the Judy Blume movie! I loved her books as a kid!
ReplyDeleteSamantha - I was thinking the same thing! I pack a lunch with good intentions but 4-5 hours it's never what I really want to eat. lol
Deleteyeah I haven't been in a theater since early 2020. I went in the daytime and it was nearly empty. If you can go to sleep early and get more rest when needed, go for it!
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Anne - We went to a matinee assuming it would be less crowded. Plus, it's not like it was a big blockbuster movie. lol I think there were less than 10 of us in the whole theater. :)
DeleteWhen theaters reopened after COVID I rushed to watch a movie LOL. It's not that I am every week at the theater but I find it a nice change of scenery. I hope next week will be less busy at work Tanya!
ReplyDeleteSophie - It was fun to finally see a movie on the big screen again. And I was glad it wasn't crowded. :)
DeleteThat quote about the me who buys groceries and the me who has to cook is hilarious! :D And how fun that Judy Blume makes a cameo in the movie.
ReplyDeleteLark - True, right? I have all the best intentions when I buy the groceries, but they're long gone when I have to prep and cook. lol
DeleteWe went and saw a movie in the theater a month or two ago and it was the first time I had been in a theater for ages! I loved Judy Blume books (though I was more of a Nancy Drew fan) and I remember reading It's Me Margaret and enjoying it but the main thing I remember was being confused about the belts and stuff for the pads when she started her period. I should reread it and/or watch the movie. It sounds like they did a great job. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteKatherine - Too funny because I thought the same thing back when I read the book in the late 70's. My mom had to explain about pads before adhesive strips. lol
DeleteGlad you enjoyed the movie so much.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark. It was a nice dose of nostalgia. :)
DeleteI devoured Judy Blume’s books as a preteen. She was the first author I ever sent fan mail!
ReplyDeleteI can’t wait to see the movie.
Wishing you a great reading week
Shelleyrae - I hope you'll enjoy the movie when you see it!
DeleteMargret was a bit before my time.. I never read the book. But had heard of it. Glad you enjoyed the movie.
ReplyDeleteNice of you to be able to spend time with your siblings and mom.
Thanks Hena. It was great to get together with my mom and sisters.
Delete2018 could very well be the last time I was in a theater as well. I can't even remember the movie I saw. I still haven't been in one now. I haven't really been interested in the Margaret movie, but I'm glad to know it hit the spot for nostalgia.
ReplyDeleteDeanna - There's rarely anything at the theater that really interests me, but Margaret was such a childhood favorite that I knew I wanted to see it.
DeleteI'm glad it worked out well for you then!
DeleteHopefully you will review Smokeshow so I can hear what you thought. I am starting the sequel today.
Deanna - Well, by now you know my thoughts on Smokeshow. LOL I had Fireball on hold thru Libby but it says I have about a two week wait. Can't wait to read your thoughts on it!
DeleteWe go to bed at 9 most nights and it's not unusual for us to go early at 8. I think that the last movie that I saw in the theater was The Martian which came out in 2015. I hope that you have a good week!
ReplyDeleteCarole - Glad to know I'm not the only early-to-bed one! :)
DeleteI haven't read the book but I do want to see the movie. It looks so sweet. We usually go to matinees so there's not many people there (intentional on our part lol)
ReplyDeleteWe do not have Dunkin Donuts out here *cries* but we have approximately 1,000,000 other coffee places being the birth place of SB and all lol
Karen @For What It's Worth
Karen - The movie really was so sweet. I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts if you decide to go see it.
DeleteYeah, I imagine you're not hurting for drink options up there. LOL
That sounds like a wonderful experience in the theater Tanya. Love that. ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the sound of that drink. Yummm.
Have a great week and happy reading.
Maureen - I'm already excited to go back and get another one of those drinks!
DeleteJudy Blume was a huge part of my childhood, and I can't wait to see the movie!
ReplyDeleteJill

Jill - I hope you'll love the movie, too!
DeleteYou know, I never read Judy Blume growing up. I don't know why. I read other classics like Beverly Cleary and Roald Dahl. Glad it was a good movie adaptation though!!
ReplyDeleteLauren @ www.shootingstarsmag.net
Lauren - I remember reading some by Cleary as a child, but Blume was always my favorite. :)
DeleteGlad you enjoyed the movie, and it sounds like you spent a nice Mother's Day with your mom. I might have read a book or two of Judy's growing up, but I think I read more Nancy Drew than anything.
ReplyDeleteAlison - For some reason I never got much into the Nancy Drew books (even though my older sister had a bunch of them). I was a Judy Blume girl all the way. :)
DeleteI really ended up reading them just because they were what was bought for me.
DeleteLooks like you had such a great week! Happy Mother's Day and hope it was a nice day for you. I had such a fun time with that Catherine Cowles and loved reading your review for it. Such a great friends to lovers for me. I love the way she writes small town romances. So atmospheric. I hope you end up having a great week darling!
ReplyDeleteRenee - I'm so glad you are a fellow Catherine Cowles lover. :) Her small town romances are just the kind I like, especially with the little dash of suspense she adds. Hope you're having a great week!
