Top Ten Tuesday: Lions and Tigers and... You Get the Idea | Animals on Book Covers

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This Week's Top Ten Tuesday Topic:
Animals on Book Covers

I'm not particularly drawn to book covers with animals so this seemingly easy prompt was a tricky one for me. I had to a deep dive on my Goodreads shelves to come up with ten. And by deep dive I mean that I had to back more than a decade on my "read shelf". I did manage to find ten, though, and ended up with an assortment from wolves, bears and horses, all the way to birds, butterflies and snakes.

Wolfsong - T.J. Klune
The Raven Boys - Maggie Stiefvater
Written in Red - Anne Bishop
Tell the Wolves I'm Home - Carol Rifka Brunt
Good Boy - Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy
The Queen of Nothing - Holly Black
Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins
Point of Retreat - Colleen Hoover
Furiously Happy - Jenny Lawson

Have you read any of these books?

  3. I'm the same about animals on covers! I'm not a huge animal person, so if I see a dog or something on the cover, it kind of puts me off a little!

    1. Angela - Oh my gosh, yes! I'm a so *not* an animal person but I swear if you come out and say that people act like you admitted to kicking puppies or something. I am the same, an animal on the cover totally puts me off. If I know a dog or pet plays a big part in a story, I know it's probably not something for me.

    1. Mareli - You give me way too much credit! lol I was searching high and low just to come up with these ten. If I'd actually tried to find lions and tigers and bears, I'd still be searching. Haha! And yet you rattled off several with ease!

  17. I like your choices even though you had to dig deep, lol! I feel like I've read a lot of books with an animal on the cover, from Urban Fantasy reads to contemporary romance. There seems like there's a dog on a lot contemporary romances, haha!

    1. Rachel - I see animals used on covers a LOT for authors like Jill Shalivis, Debbie Macomber, etc. But those aren't really my go-to so I had to search hard for these.

  22. Going back ten years was quite a search! This post made me realize the books I read rarely have animals on the cover.

    1. Lucy - I guess if I read fantasy or cozy mysteries I wouldn't have had that problem. Animals always seem to be on those covers. But indie romance... not so much. lol

  23. I don't think I realized that Written In Red had an animal on the cover until I really looked at it! I read a lot of cozy mysteries so I don't think I even had to go back a month to find ten books with animals on the cover!

    1. Katherine - I think it's an unwritten rule that every cozy mystery must have an animal on the cover. :)
