WWW Wednesday #81 | April 1, 2020

WWW Wednesdays is a meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words.
Just answer three questions and share what you're reading.

Happy April, friends. I'm guessing this will be an April we won't forget. I'm hopeful this month brings a turning point where we can see the spread of the virus peak and then - finally - take a downward turn. Maybe it's overly optimistic, but I'm still going to hope.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Currently reading: I was only able to read the first 2-3 pages this morning before I had to stop and get to work, but I'm excited to read more this evening. This arc is one I've been highly anticipating since Amy Harmon is one of my favorite authors. This time period - set in the 1850's in the U.S. West - is not one that typically calls to me, but I trust Harmon and know that she will deliver an epic story.
Current progress: 1%

Currently listening: This one is a little slow-going but I think that's because I no longer have a daily commute and that was when I listened to my audio books each day. This is my first by Van Dyken and for now it's falling into the like-not-love category. I don't feel particularly invested in either of the main characters but I'm still not quite at the halfway mark so I'll see how it goes.
Current progress: 45%

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

So I know I give the Sea Breeze series a lot of crap, but I've gotta say, Hold on Tight really surprised me. I think it might be the first time in the series that I genuinely liked both characters. Yes, Dewayne started out being a douchey manwhore, but whatever. And yes Sienna was a bit naive, but given how she was raised and what happened to her at a young age it kind of made sense. But I really liked them both. Sienna had been dealt such a lousy hand (and had the worst parents) but this girl was made of strong stuff and was mature, responsible and determined to do the right thing. And Dewayne, despite feeling like he wasn't good enough, actually had a heart of gold. I loved the way he was determined to look after Sienna and Micah and make sure they never wanted for anything. Definitely one of my favorites in the series.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

Not sure exactly what I'll pick up next but these are all strong contenders.

What are you currently reading?
I wanna know! :)

  1. I eagerly anticipate your thoughts on the Sea Breeze books. They always amuse me. Are you considering reading the Sea Breeze/Rosemary Beach crossovers? It's their kids in the books. I definitely have one, but have not gotten to it. I listened to the majority of both series, as they work well for me on audio. You are reminding me of how I need to get to the Tucker book too.

    1. I have so much fun with the Sea Breeze books. I mean, I know I talk crap about them, but they really are fun escapism. I can't believe I have only one left! It'll be good to get Rock and Trisha's story. And I'm sure I'll continue on with the crossover series. It's just too delicious not to. LOL

  2. I listened to those Sea Breeze novels like a year or so ago. They're not like amazing, but I ended up loving all the characters.

    1. For some reason I totally fell for all the characters in the Rosemary Beach series but have been more discriminating with the Sea Breeze crowd.

  3. Yes, we all need hope right now! Things are heating up for me at the hospital, but I hope after the next two weeks (as the reports say) things settle down. We'll see. I'm going in late today.

The Rachel Van Dyken stories have been in the like and not love category, which is why I don't really read her books anymore. I'm interested in the new Amy Harmon as I like that time period. Take care, Tanya!

    1. I really hope the worst will pass before things get too bad at the hospital, Rachel. Please take care of yourself.

I'm withholding judgement on the Van Dyken book until I finish it. Maybe it'll surprise. As far as the Amy Harmon release, I'm truly expecting greatness. She is such an amazing storyteller.

  4. Our governor just extended the stay at home recommendation through 5/4, so I think this month will be more of the same. I agree that listening is taking a lot longer now that I don't have my daily commute. On the other hand, reading physical books is going a lot faster!

    1. Yesterday our mayor put a shelter in place order in effect for our city. And then just a couple hours later the governor did the same for the whole state. That runs thru the end of April. So another month of working from home. Strange times!

    2. That's awesome! My hubby isn't a huge reader, but he does enjoy listening to audiobooks from time to time. I really enjoy when we can both discuss a book!

  9. Hold on Tight is one that tempts me (despite my dislike of the series) and that's because I'm a cover whore and the guy on the cover ticks quite a few of my boxes. 😂 The fact that you genuinely liked the characters gives me lots of hope!

    1. LOL Well, with the cover guy doing it for you, plus Dewayne and and Sienna being so likable, I'd say take a chance on this one. It was genuinely a good story.

  10. Yeah, April is definitely going to be similar to March in terms of not going anywhere BUT like you said, I'm hoping things will look a bit brighter by the end of the month. I need some hopefulness in my life! lol Hope you enjoy all of your books! I imagine finding time/motivation for audios would be tough when you no longer commute.

  11. The Sea Breeze Series is perfect for a light and breezy read. I'm glad you enjoyed Hold on Tight. I read a Rachel Van Dykan book or two many years ago, and wasn't the biggest fan. I'm currently listening to The Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas on audiobook. I'm behind on my reading/listening. I hope things get better with this virus quickly. It would be such a relief. I'm going to hold out hope too :)

    1. The two Sea Breeze books I've read in the past two weeks have really hit the spot. Just what I needed. :) I hope The Devil in Winter is a good one!

  12. I just finished The Perfect Escape. It wasn't the promised fluffy rom-com but I had been warned so I ended up liking it.

Other than that reading is slooooooow for me.

    1. Books misrepresenting themselves is becoming quite the pet peeve of mine. Glad you still enjoyed it, though. My reading is super slow, too.

  13. I have only tried Van Dyken once and ended up setting the book aside. I do want to give her work another try though. I am glad that Hold on Tight worked out so well for you. I have hope too :)

    1. Yeah, the further I get into the Van Dyken the more I realize that was it's entertaining enough, there's really not a lot there that drawing me in. And I don't think it's going to be particularly memorable.

  14. I am probably going to finish Master Class by Christina Dalcher (VERY good so far) tonight and then I shall be starting Where the Lost Wander as well! I am so excited, I hope we both love it! Before Master Class, I finished The Easy Part of Impossible by Sarah Tomp and I LOOOOOOVED IT. I think you would like it too, actually! It's contemporary, coming of age, plus romance!

  15. I haven't read anything by Amy Harmon yet but I've heard really positive things about her writing. I have to get cracking on reading my ARC of Where the Lost Wander too 😂 I think what made me request this very quickly was the cover reminding me of this computer game I used to play as a kid called Oregon Trail 🤣 Haha hope you enjoy it. Happy reading!

    1. What's funny is that another blogger friend said the exact thing to me recently, Dini. That she requested the book because it reminded her of Oregon Trail. I don't remember game that at all (I guess it wasn't around when I was of the right age) but it's funny that I now know two people who requested the book for that reason. :)

  16. The cover on that Amy Harmon book is so pretty. I hope these both end up being good reads for you. I fell down the George R.R. Martin rabbit hole this week so A Dance with Dragons is pretty much the only thing I read. Getting back to my ARCs now though starting with The Big Finish by Brooke Fossey.

    1. I'm definitely enjoying the Amy Harmon, I always love her writing. It just isn't the kind of book I'll fly through. I'm taking it slow and savoring it. A Dance with Dragons was quite the undertaking! Good luck with your ARCs!
