Monthly Wrap Up | August 2019

WHAT HAPPENED IN AUGUST
  • The entire month was day after day of sweltering heat. Not a fan. Zero stars - do not recommend.
  • Had to get a new computer at the beginning of the month. I'm still fine-tuning things, like loading my favorite anti-virus software and setting up folders, etc. And I still haven't set up Carbonite on the new PC. Need to do that soon (or maybe The Husband will look into that for me... hint, hint, Robert :).
  • Had my annual physical and all is well but I'm also at the age where one appointment seems to result in two or three others. LOL
  • One of my favorite shows from the late 90's/early 2000's got a reboot. I watched the first episode of BH90210... and decided some things are better left alone.
WHAT I READ IN AUGUST

*Note: Yes, I know the graphic is crooked but I just can't be bothered to re-do it.

August was a pretty mediocre reading month - with the exception of one 5-star read. I read six books which is low even for me. (This might even be lower in September since I've been reading the same book for a week and a half.)

The Last Post by Renee Carlino | 3.5/5 stars
Breathe by Abbi Glines | 3/5 stars
Because of Low by Abbi Glines | 3.25/5 stars
While It Lasts by Abbi Glines | 3.25/5 stars
Just For Now by Abbi Glines | 3.25/5 stars
The Reckless Oath We Made by Bryn Greewood | 5/5 stars

The Last Post and The Reckless Oath We Made link to full reviews on the blog. I didn't have enough to say about the Abbi Glines titles to review them here so they are linked to short (and a little snarky) reviews on GoodReads.

TOP OF THE HEAP
The Reckless Oath We Made
Bryn Greenwood did it again and created two main characters that felt so human and so flawed and so real that I was 100% invested in their story. The Reckless Oath We Made was totally unique and I loved every minute of it.

THE ONE THAT WAS SURPRISINGLY EMOTIONAL
Just For Now
Despite my issues with this one (the male main character ran so hot and cold that I wanted to do him bodily harm), it took a turn I didn't expect and actually managed to eke out some real emotion.

THE ONE THAT LEFT ME WANTING MORE
The Last Post
Renee Carlino has written some that I've loved and some that I've been on the fence about. With The Last Post I just wanted... more. It was good but I wished for more connection with the main characters. It just felt a little lacking overall.

THE ONE THAT INDUCED MUCH EYE-ROLLING
Breathe
Have there ever been two more annoying main characters? If so, I don't want to know. Sadie was saccharine sweet, naive beyond belief and basically a clueless Mary Sue. Jax was possessive, insanely jealous and irrational. They deserve each other and should go far, far away. Fingers crossed they don't show up often in the rest of the series.

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING
I'm on Day 11 (maybe 12?) of reading this one and I honestly don't know if it's me or the book. It's not even a long one (325 pages) and yet I'm still only on page 235. I enjoy it well enough when I'm reading it, but it's not like I think about it and am itching to pick it up again. I don't know if I'm in a bit of a book hangover after The Reckless Oath We Made, if I've just been busy, or if the book just isn't thrilling me. Either way, I'm going to make a concerted effort to just finish it in the next few days.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE READ IN AUGUST?

Monthly Wrap-Up | July 2019

WHAT HAPPENED IN JULY
  • Much time was spent on redecorating in July. I'm happy to report the master bedroom is *almost* done.
  • The Husband and I went to a concert and I was in 80's/90's heaven. So much fun. A couple weeks later we went to a baseball game. Slightly less fun but I managed to make it to the 4th or 5th inning. :)
  • I spent a lot of time complaining about the heat. But I enjoyed all the rain and thunderstorms.
  • We lost a friend in July. Grace (Rebel Mommy Book Blog) was an active member in the book blogging community and will be missed. Gone much too soon.
  • Had a health scare with The Husband and spent a day at the hospital having numerous tests run. Thankfully all is well but I spent the next few days not wanting to let that precious man out of my sight.
WHAT I READ IN JULY

I read/listened to seven books in July which is about my average, maybe a little less. No 5-star ratings in July but still plenty of good reads!

Fumbled by Alexa Martin | 4.25/5 stars
Getting Played* by Emma Chase | 4/5 stars
Raze by Roan Parrish | 3.75/5 stars
Good Boy* by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy | 4.25/5 stars
Hope and Other Punch Lines by Julie Buxbaum | 4.5/5 stars

TOP OF THE HEAP
Fumbled | Say You Still Love Me
For the sheer enjoyment factor, these two were total stand-outs. Fumbled cemented Alexa Martin as a new favorite author. And Say You Still Love Me was a perfect example of why Tucker is a long-time favorite.

THE ONE THAT PACKED AN EMOTIONAL PUNCH
Hope and Other Punch Lines
A story that relies so heavily on 9/11 for its plot can either go very wrong or very right. Thankfully Buxbaum handled this one carefully and provided a heartbreakingly wonderful story of loss that was perfectly balanced with humor and hope.

THE QUIET ONE
Awakening Autumn
I've raved about Lora Richardson for a couple years now. Y'all know how I feel about her YA contemporary novels. Awakening Autumn was another example of her gifted story telling. It's a quiet story with a lot of heart.

THE RE-READ WITH ALL THE LAUGHS
Good Boy
After doing yet another re-listen of both Him and Us in June, I decided to continue on and re-listen to Good Boy in July. Blake Riley is simply priceless and one of my favorite fictional characters. Sure he comes across at times as an overgrown man-child, but he's also completely selfless and all heart. His Blake-isms kept me laughing through the whole book.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE BLOG
I had 15 blog posts in June which included 3 reviews: Raze, Say You Still Love Me, and Awakening Autumn (all are linked above). I also shared my favorite unforgettable characters and my top auto-buy authors.

June Wrap-Up

WHAT HAPPENED IN JUNE
  • Is it just me or did June seem to pass in the blink of an eye?
  • I was over the moon when the St. Louis Blues went all the way to game seven to win the 2019 Stanley Cup. If someone told me a year ago that I would be a total hockey fan I would have thought they were crazy. But around the first of the year I got caught up in the excitement and here we are... with me already excited for the next season! :)
  • Between car maintenance and the master bedroom makeover I felt as if we were hemorrhaging money throughout June.
  • June 23rd marked one year since the loss of my father. Had a rough few days.
  • The heat continues. It was so bad for a week or two period (daily temps hovering at close to 100 degrees) that I am actually thankful right now that it's only 91. How pitiful is that? Is it too soon to be totally over summer??
WHAT I READ IN JUNE

I read/listened to eight books in June which is about my average. Two books per week - reading one and listening to one. No 5-star ratings in June but still plenty of good reads!

Hook Shot* by Kennedy Ryan | 4.25/5 stars
I Wish You All the Best* by Mason Deaver | 4.25/5 stars
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston | 4.25/5 stars

TOP OF THE HEAP
Fumbled | Red, White & Royal Blue
For the sheer enjoyment factor, these two were total stand-outs.

THE ONE THAT MADE ME SAD
Birthday
While it did end on a hopeful note, it was a hard time getting there. Morgan, in particular, suffered so much and following his journey over the 5-6 years the book covered was often painful. This one seriously hurt my heart.

THE ONE WITH THE CINNAMON ROLL
Raze
I had no idea what to expect with this one. I requested it on a whim, having zero knowledge of the author or the series. But I flew through the story of Felix and Dane as they faced their own issues and found strength and acceptance in each other. And Felix was The Most Precious Character. So vulnerable and yet so willing to ask for the love he craved. Loved him!

THE ONE WITH ALL THE FEELS
Hook Shot
I loved getting Lotus and Kenan's story in Hook Shot. Kennedy Ryan writes with such emotion and I was pulled right in to their fledgling relationship. So much happens, they go through so much - both together and separately - and my emotions ran the gamut. I laughed, I cried, I was angry, I swooned...Hook Shot delivered it all.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE BLOG
I had 18 blog posts in June which included 4 reviews: Storm and FuryMrs. Everything,  I Wish You All the Best, and Superfan. I really need to step up my review game (and yes I'm aware I say that every month). I also shared my new favorite authors, the best books I read in the spring, and did the Mid-Year Book Freak Out tag

May Wrap Up

WHAT HAPPENED IN MAY
  • On the 1st of May The Husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. He's better than any book boyfriend.
  • Watched the Game of Thrones finale (like a zillion other people) and thought it was... meh. I wished for better/different/more.
  • Celebrated Mother's Day with my mom. Tried to go someplace special for dinner but everyplace I called had 2 hour waits. Ended up at Longhorn.
  • Had some awesome shopping excursions at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. If you do not have these stores, I am sad for you.
  • Had a hefty Book Outlet haul and now I want to read All The Books.
  • Obsessively watched the Stanley Cup play-offs. I'm not a St. Louis Blues fan, particularly. I just want someone to beat the Bruins. *insert evil laughter*
WHAT I READ IN MAY

I read/listened to eight books in May and had TWO 5-star reads! Y'all know I give out 5 stars so sparingly that it's like they're made of rainbow-sprinkled unicorn dust. So having two within one month is kind of epic.

Intercepted* by Alexa Martin | 4.25/5 stars
Hard As It Gets by Laura Kaye | 3.5/5 stars
Long Shot (Hoops #1)* by Kennedy Ryan | 5/5 stars
Block Shot (Hoops #2)* by Kennedy Ryan | 4.25/5 stars
Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner | 5/5 stars

TOP OF THE HEAP
Long Shot, Mrs. Everything

THE BOTTOM OF THE HEAP
Hard As It Gets
Not a bad book by any means, but I'm also not rushing to continue the series.

THE ONE THAT TOOK ME BY SURPRISE
Intercepted
I figured this one would be a good time but I had no idea how much I would enjoy it.

THE ONE THAT WAS LIKE VISITING OLD FRIENDS
Storm and Fury
Every scene with Roth or Cayman or Bambi had me practically cheering.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE BLOG
I had 15 blog posts in April which included 6 reviews. Fewer posts that I would like but I'm giving myself a gold star for the review posts. Go me. I shared my favorite book-to-movie adaptations as well as my favorite books from each of the last 10 years

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING

I'm not very far into Red, White & Royal Blue yet (maybe 60 pages) but I'm already enjoying it so much. Alex is a riot with his snarky comebacks and I'm wanting to find out what's behind Henry's cool exterior. I'm at about the 80% mark in Hook Shot and, just like with the previous books in the series, am completely invested. I had to stop listening this morning because I got so worried about something that was happening. Ha!

April Wrap-Up

WHAT HAPPENED IN APRIL
  • I completed the beginners yoga series in April. Not sure I'm a total yogi/convert but I enjoyed the instructor and sharing the experience with The Husband and my mom.
  • Celebrated my younger sister's birthday. How is it she's getting older but I'm not? :)
  • The Tampa Lightning didn't make it past the first round in the Stanley Cup play-offs. I no longer have a stake but I'm low-key pulling for the Carolina Hurricanes.
  • Had my yearly eye exam for new glasses and contacts. And would like to say that daily wear multi-focal contact lenses must be made of platinum because they are freaking expensive. (I think I say this every year but it's true.)
  • Took a week off (which lopped over into May) and enjoyed some much needed R&R.
WHAT I READ IN MARCH

I read/listened to ten books in April which is a repeat of March. No five star reads in April but I still read some really great books. The Bride Test and How To Save a Life were real stand-outs.

Flesh* (Flesh #1) by Kylie Scott | 3.5/5 stars
Skin* (Flesh #2) by Kylie Scott | 3/5 stars
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren | 4.5/5 stars
How To Save a Life by Emma Scott | 4.5/5 stars

It was entertaining... but also pretty ridiculous.

THE ONE THAT MADE ME RIDICULOUSLY HAPPY
The Bride Test
I could have just kept on reading about Khai and Esme (and Quan). I love those characters.

THE ONE WITH THE AWESOME EPILOGUE
Salvaged
The epilogue mentioned every single main character from the Marked Men series plus the Saints of Denver series and my heart was bursting with the last look at the characters I'd come to love.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE BLOG
I had 17 blog posts in April (down from 24 in March) but that's what a week away will do for you. I posted 5 reviews plus a series review (for the Saints of Denver) so I'm giving myself a gold star. I shared the things that make me pick up a book as well as my favorite rainy day reads

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING

I'm not exactly flying through Hard As It Gets. It's been a week and I'm 170 pages in. I enjoy it well enough while I'm reading it, but it's not like I think about it when I'm not reading or can't wait to pick it back up.  The exact opposite is true for Intercepted. I'm listening to this audio book every chance I get and seriously loving it. I adore both main characters, they act like adults (imagine that), and the conflicts are realistic, not over the top drama. I'm at about the 80% mark and don't want it to end!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE READ IN APRIL?

March Wrap-Up

WHAT HAPPENED IN MARCH
  • I was featured at Deanna Reads Books in her brand new Meet The Blogger feature. Thanks for having me, Deanna!
  • I went to a hockey game. The home team lost but still... hockey.
  • The whole family gathered to celebrate my mom's birthday. She makes 74 look good. :)
  • I started a six week beginners yoga course and learned that I have no flexibility.
  • My mom had out-patient surgery and stayed with us overnight. She had the honor of being our first overnight guest since moving into the new house. There was no prize involved.
WHAT I READ IN MARCH

I read/listened to ten books in March which is up from the seven I read in February. Go me! I had two 5-star reads in March and that never happens. I save my 5-star ratings for those very special books that make a true and lasting impact on me. I hand those out like gold and typically have a couple each year. They're like rainbow-colored princess unicorns with sprinkles on top - so having two in one month was kind of blowing my mind. No big surprise that one of those was from Taylor Jenkins Reid. The woman is like my writing spirit animal.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE BLOG
I had 24 blog posts in March (up from 18 in February) which I'm totally happy with. And my goal to step up my review game? Success. I posted six book reviews in March (just 4 in February). So I'm feeling pretty good about March... now if I can just keep it up in April. :)

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING

I'm 120 pages into My Favorite Half-Night Stand. I'm not connecting to the characters quite as quickly and easily as I have in other CLo books, but hopefully that will change as I get further into the story. I downloaded the audio version of Flesh by Kylie Scott on a whim yesterday. It's some kind of post-apocalyptic zombie tale that was originally released in 2012. I've barely started it so no real opinion yet. (Side note: This was the ever-so-slightly better cover out of the two options. The other was basically just a shot of a guy's hand on a girl's jeans-covered ass. Quite the toss-up, no? Abs or a hand on a butt. Oh, the dilemma. LOL)

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE READ IN MARCH?

February Wrap-Up

Here's what happened in February:
  • I had a guest post at Beware of the Reader sharing my Top 5 Romantic Songs. And I was featured at JennRenneRead.
  • I had a four day weekend mid-month and it was fabulous.
  • I went to a showing of Star Wars with the score performed by an orchestra. Lots of fun.
  • I won two giveaways. One for an ebook of my choice and another for a physical copy of What the Wind Knows which I'm super excited to receive.

I read/listened to seven books in February which is down from the eleven I read in January. But February is shorter so I'm blaming it on that. Let's go with it, shall we? All three of my audio books were re-listens which was fun. I completed the Marked Men series (again) and have finally moved on to the spin-off series Saints of Denver. But more on that in next month's wrap-up. :)

On Thin Ice

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE BLOG
I had 18 blog posts in January which I'm totally happy with. But that only included 4 book reviews which I'm not so happy with. My goal in March? Step up my review game. Books reviewed in February were: The Air He Breathes, On Thin Ice, Leah on the Offbeat, and Wild Country.

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING

I'm 100 pages into ACOFAS and hope to finish it this weekend. I love being back in this world and around this tight-knit group of friends/family. I'm about 60% into the audio version of Watching You and I can hardly stop listening. This is a slower, quieter mystery. There aren't shocking events happening every chapter. Instead there's a growing sense of unease, of there bring more than meets the eye, and that something big is going to happen when it all comes to a head.

January Wrap-Up

The first month of the year is in the books and overall it was a good one. Here's what happened:
  • I had a couple medical appointments that I'd been putting off (for no other reason than timing). It felt good to get them taken care of and be proactive.
  • My niece turned 11 (how is that possible?!).
  • We had unseasonably warm weather almost all month with only a few cold days here and there. *pouts*
  • I attended my first hockey game... and loved it!
  • I had a great mail day when I received a physical ARC of The Girl He Used to Know by Tracy Garvis Graves.
  • I had my first 5 star read of the year.
WHAT I READ IN JANUARY

I read ELEVEN books in January which is more than I've read in a long time. It felt great to be in such an awesome reading groove. :)

FORMATS
3 physical books
3 ebooks
5 audiobooks

TOP OF THE HEAP

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE BLOG
Somehow I managed TWENTY blog posts in January which is probably some kind of record for me. So, yay me. :) That included six book reviews (yay me, again!): The One You Fight For, The Christmas Sisters, The Simple Wild, The Wicked King, Only a Breath Apart, and Moonlight Scandals.

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING
I'm only 20% in and still trying to figure out Brooke's background and Jake's story, but I'm definitely enjoying it.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE READ IN JANUARY?

October Wrap-Up

October was an okay reading month, even though I'm still reading quite a bit less than my norm. It was a stressful summer with my father's illness and then passing, buying a new home and moving, the sale of our old house... there was a lot that kept me busy, distracted or otherwise just not in frame of mind to read. I've averaged just 4-5 books a month since June. October was a little less hectic but I still didn't read enough to justify a Best In Books post this month. Maybe in November (*fingers crossed*). But in the meantime, here's what my October reading looked like.

THE GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO VICE AND VIRTUE (review)
MACKENZI LEE
4 STARS
This sat on my shelf for almost a year before I (finally) picked it up. And when I finished it all I could think was, "Why did I wait so long?" Because The Gentleman's Guide was loads of fun and I adored Monty and Percy.

ONE DAY IN DECEMBER
JOSIE SILVER
4 STARS
Now that I think about it, I probably shorted this one with the 4 star rating. Not a 5 star read (those are super rare) but definitely more than 4. I was totally taken in by Laurie and Jack's decade-long journey to finding true happiness.

THE DARKEST STAR (review)
JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT
4.5 STARS
The Darkest Star was one of my most anticipated releases of the year. And it totally delivered. Full of action and twists, fun dialogue, some romance, new characters and some old favorites.

TAYLOR JENKINS REID
4 STARS
I'm beginning to think Taylor Jenkins Reid can do no wrong. From romance, to epic tales that span decades, to short stories, TJR consistently delivers great stories with emotional impact.

CHARLEIGH ROSE
3 STARS
I borrowed this audiobook from Hoopla on a whim and it was... okay.
Mostly entertaining but nothing memorable.

CURRENTLY READING
Bowen is a total go-to author and I'm excited to continue this companion series.
