Brynn Larson owes a lot to reality television and professional athletes. Her bar hit new heights of success after becoming a local haunt for the Denver Mustangs players and their WAGs. But although she’s grateful, that doesn’t mean she’s crazy. And that’s exactly what she would be to ever consider dating a professional athlete. Even if it’s Maxwell Lewis, whose shy smile makes her wonder what going on behind those beautiful brown eyes.

Maxwell knew from the moment he met Brynn that she was going to change his life. It was only a matter of time. But when he finally makes a move, fate conspires against him and everything goes wrong. Now he has to show her that their potential is real. Too bad for him, Brynn isn’t fooled by his glamorous NFL life, and when ghosts from both their pasts make a sudden reappearance, she must decide who she can trust. But when the person she’s most afraid of is herself, navigating life’s tackles is harder than anticipated.

Having loved both Intercepted and Fumbled, I had been eagerly awaiting Alexa Martin’s next entry in the Playbook series. Brynn was a secondary character that featured prominently in the earlier books, so I was excited to get her story. Unfortunately, I found myself wishing Brynn would return to the background and that another character would be front and center.

Brynn is the owner of HERS, a woman-centric bar whose success has skyrocketed with the regular patronage of professional athletes and as the setting of a reality show featuring their wives and girlfriends. Max is a professional football player and, while he may be a beast on the field, outside of the game he is quiet, reserved and humble. And very much smitten with Brynn. What ensues is the stumbling beginnings of a relationship between Brynn and Max, despite baggage from the past – both his and hers.

Right off the bat I felt confused by Brynn’s character. I really enjoyed her in the previous two books; strong and capable, and acting as both friend and mentor to the main characters. But in Blitzed, those qualities I admired were nowhere to be found. This Brynn was insecure, immature, flighty and petty. (At one point she actually thought, "If only I had the emotional maturity of an actual adult woman." My feelings exactly, Brynn!) I couldn’t believe this woman had the wherewithal to be a successful entrepreneur and businesswoman. The complete change in who she appeared to be in the earlier books left me feeling like I didn’t want to know this Brynn at all. But what really sunk this ship for me was Brynn’s decision to trust a virtual stranger over someone she knew and trusted. Never mind that what this person said was totally contrary to what she knew. No matter that she had already been warned that this person was up to no good and should be avoided. It made no sense. It made me angry at Brynn for acting so capriciously and it made me angry with the author for using such an illogical plot device to create conflict and unnecessary drama. By the time that happened (at the 90% mark), I was ready to chuck the book at the wall in disgust and frustration.

The saving grace in Blitzed was Max. When we meet him in the opening scene, he has a surprising outburst but it’s quickly obvious that it was completely out of character. Because Max is  kind and respectful. He is an elite athlete, successful and affluent, but handles it with humility and maturity. When it came to Brynn, he didn’t play games and he treated her with such respect and care. The fact that he got unfair accusations in return (without ever being given the benefit of doubt) made me ragey on his behalf because everything he had presented to Brynn previously screamed that he was a stand-up kind of guy.

While Blitzed was something of a letdown for me, I am still such a fan of the series as a whole. Intercepted and Fumbled were among my favorite reads of 2019 and I'm excited to see what's next from Alexa Martin.

Disclosure: I received a a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. This does not impact my opinion of the book or the content of this review. I received no compensation and my review is voluntary.

Top Ten Tuesday: Best New (to me) Authors of 2019

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic:
Best New (To Me) Authors of 2019

This week's topic is actually bookish discoveries of 2019 but I'm twisting (or refining) that slightly to focus on the best new-to-me authors I read throughout the year. A couple were debut authors so they were new to everyone, and some were established authors and I was just late to the game. #storyofmylife 😉

BRITTAINY C. CHERRY

Books read by the author in 2019: The Air He Breathes

I only read this one book by Cherry last year but I will absolutely be reading more from her this year.

LORELEI JAMES

Books read by the author in 2019: I Want You Back

I discovered Lorelei James because I requested an ARC of I Want You Back on a whim. It totally surpassed my expectations and now I want to go back and read the books in the previous series (I Want You Back was the first book in a spin-off series).

ALEXA MARTIN

Books read by the author in 2019: Intercepted, Fumbled, Blitzed

What a find Alexa Martin was! While Blitzed was more hit than miss for me, I loved both Intercepted and Fumbled. (They can't all be 5-star reads, right?) I am excited to see what 2020 brings from Martin!

KENNEDY RYAN

Books read by the author in 2019: Long Shot, Block Shot, Hook Shot, Flow, Grip

Kennedy Ryan became a new favorite in 2019 with her well-developed characters that felt completely authentic and her emotional storytelling.

MASON DEAVER

Books read by the author in 2019: I Wish You All the Best

Deaver's debut last year pulled me right in and I loved the warmth and heart in how they told Ben's story.

CASEY MCQUISTON

Books read by the author in 2019: Red, White & Royal Blue

McQuiston was another debut author who took me by surprise. RW&RB was smart and funny and clever and swoony.

TARA SIVEC (with Andi Arndt)

Books read by the author in 2019: Heidi's Guide to Four Letter Words

Tara Sivec was already on my radar (and several of her books on my Kindle) when I listened to the audio book of Heidi's Guide. Now I really want to read the other books I own by Sivec - and hopefully Andi Arndt will write more, too.

JEN DELUCA

Books read by the author in 2019: Well Met

DeLuca's Well Met was one of my biggest surprises of the year. So funny and sweet and charming. I am ridiculously excited for DeLuca's next release in September.

EMILY GIFFIN

Books read by the author in 2019: All We Ever Wanted

I'd seen Giffin's books around for years but 2019 was my first time picking one up. I was so impressed with All We Ever Wanted that I gifted copies to my mom and sisters for Christmas. I'll definitely be reading more from her this year.

RAEANNE THAYNE

Books read by the author in 2019: Coming Home for Christmas

RaeAnne Thayne is a mainstay in contemporary romance with over 200 titles on Goodreads, but I wasn't introducted to her writing until I picked up Coming Home for Christmas when I had the urge for a holiday read last December. While the small town/sweet romance was not my usual (sub)genre, I found that it was exactly what I needed at the time. And it definitely made me want to explore more from Thayne.

#Blogmas2019 Days 19, 20, 21 and 22: Best Cover, Most Powerful Writing, Best LGBTQ, Best Audiobook #BestBooksof2019

Welcome to Blogmas 2019!
Blogmas is the creation of Sophie @ Beware of the Reader. This is her third year (I think) doing Blogmas and my second year participating. Sophie has provided some great prompts for this month and I'm excited to participate as often as possible. I'll probably be combining days fairly often, like today. If you'd like to participate, be sure to use the hashtags #Blogmas2019 and #BestBooksof2019.

DAY 19: BEST COVERS

The cover of Verity is creepy on its own, but when you've read the book and understand the meaning behind it... well, it's even creepier. Holly Black really won the cover lottery with her Folk of the Air trilogy. The Wicked King cover is just stunning. I don't know if it's the colors (which are beautiful), or the fact that I know what an amazing story is inside, but the cover of Trusting Winter makes me all kinds of happy.

DAY 20: MOST POWERFUL WRITING

In less than 300 pages, Meredith Russo was able to create two fully realized characters and impart so much emotion that I was only able to read Birthday in short bits at a time. Kennedy Ryan put a spotlight on domestic abuse in Long Shot and didn't shy away from scenes that were brutal in their depiction. Ryan's writing was powerful enough to relate the horror of domestic violence without ever delving into sensationalism. Morris's writing in Cilka's Journey wasn't poetic or even particularly literary, but that wasn't needed to relate the atrocities committed in the concentration camp and labor camp where Cilka was imprisoned. The matter-of-fact way in which Cilka's experiences were presented somehow made the impact even more powerful.

DAY 21: BEST LGBTQ

Ben from I Wish You All the Best was simply precious and I wanted to hug him and promise things would get better. My heart broke for him but I loved being witness to his journey. Red, White & Royal Blue was an absolute gem. The match of brilliant, but often remarkably clueless, Alex and the soft and sweet Henry was a joy to experience. Filled with a stellar cast of secondary characters and laugh out loud humor, RW&RB was a true stand-out.

DAY 22: BEST AUDIOBOOK

All We Ever Wanted was my first book from Emily Giffin and it was so, so good. The three narrators brought the main characters to life and had me completely invested in the events taking place. The characters and situations felt so true-to-life and I give a lot of the credit to how well the narrators portrayed the story. Intercepted was a nonstop good time. Narrator January LaVoy voiced Marlee to perfection and I loved every inflection and nuance. It made me an instant fan of Alexa Martin. Well Met was one of my big surprises of the year and the audio version was an absolute delight! Brittany Pressley was a new-to-me narrator and she struck the perfect balance between the story's humor and the more emotional scenes. This is one I'm sure I'll be listening to again.

#Blogmas2019 Days 15, 16, 17 and 18: Best Romance Author, Most Original Plot/Story, Best New-To-Me Author, Most Read Author #BestBooksOf2019

DAY 15: BEST ROMANCE AUTHOR

I could probably fill up all 31 days of posts about my favorite romance authors so there's no way I can choose just one. Be impressed that I managed to narrow it down to just three. :) Sarina Bowen is 100% dependable and I know she is always going to deliver characters that I love with a good dose of humor and heart. Alexa Martin is a newer favorite but the first two books in her Playbook series really wowed me this year. And this list could not exist without Colleen Hoover. She's been my favorite author (romance or otherwise) since I first picked up Maybe Someday in 2014. No one can so completely engage my emotions like Colleen.

DAY 16: MOST ORIGINAL/ATYPICAL PLOT OR STORY

When it come to unique and original storytelling, Bryn Greenwood is a master. Both in her stories - and how she tells them. The Reckless Oath We Made was another stellar example of that. The story of a part-time drug runner with a hoarder mother, a knight, and an epic quest to rescue a hostage. Not only are the story and characters completely original, even the telling of it is atypical. Gentry speaks in Old English and his chapters are written that way which just added to the overall uniqueness of this amazing story.

DAY 17: BEST NEW-TO-ME AUTHOR

2019 was the year I discovered Kennedy Ryan - and I'm so glad I did. It started with Sam and Amber telling me I had to read Long Shot. And I was floored. I immediately binged the next two books in the Hoops series - Block Shot and Hook Shot - and more recently have read Flow and Grip.

DAY 18: MOST READ AUTHOR IN 2019

This was a bit of a surprise to me. Until I realized that I'd re-listened to the entire Marked Men series this year and read the Saints of Denver series. In total, I read 9 books by Jay this year. Runners up include: Sarina Bowen (6 books), Kennedy Ryan (5 books), and Christina Lauren/Emma Chase/Anne Bishop (4 books each).

WWW Wednesday #68 | November 13, 2019

WWW Wednesdays is a meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words.
Just answer three questions and share what you're reading.

It's fall, y'all! 😍
It finally decided to make an appearance here in Florida.
It was almost 80 degrees here yesterday and then overnight the the temps plummeted by about 40 degrees. I was joyously breaking out the fall/winter wardrobe this morning. :)

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
I put this on hold at the library months ago and promptly forgot about it. So I was a little surpirsed when I got the email that it was ready for pick-up. :) I wasn't even sure I was still interested but decided to give it a go. I'm only 40-ish pages in and enjoyng it so far.

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
I flew through Lora Richardson's new release and loved every minue of it. Reverie was such a tough cookie on the outside but so skittish from a childhood that had way too much instability. My heart hurt for this girl who was determined to keep everyone at arms length. Eddie was an absolute sweetheart and I loved his determination. This guy just wasn't going to give up on Reverie. Another winner from Richardson!

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

Not positive but I think I'm going to pick up Blitzed next. It'll be fun to dive back into the Playbook world. Fingers crossed that my favorite characters from the previous two books make an appearance!

What are you currently reading?
I wanna know! :)

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Want to Read Before 2020

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic:
10 Books I Want to Read Before 2020

I'm going rogue again this week.

The theme is actually Books I'd Give Different Titles To but
since that one isn't thrilling me I'm doing my own thing. Again.

Instead I'm sharing 10 Books I Want to Read Before 2020. (I could say "before the end of the year", but "10 before 2020" just sounds better, don't you think?)

Because a new release from Colleen Hoover must be read immediately

Because I've put it off for far too long and I think my heart can handle it now.

Because The Guy Not Chosen (from the previous books) definitely deserves a happy ending.

Because it's time I finally read something by Penelope Douglas.

Because Julie Buxbaum.

Because Kristin Hannah.

Because I need a Warner fix.

Because when I want a mystery/thriller I want it to be from Lisa Jewell.

Because I've been dying to read something from Devney Perry.

Because I can't wait to return to the Playbook world.

Hello, I Love You! | Discovering New (to me) Authors

As a reader, there are few things that can match the feeling of discovering a new author. Well, not a new author... but a new to you author. One that you'd been meaning to try - and when you finally did the book just blew you away. Or one you just happened upon by chance - and loved the book so much that the author became an instant favorite.

What's even better? Discovering that new author and then learning they have a big ol' backlist ready and waiting for you to dive into. Book after book just waiting to be devoured. The chance of a new favorite book right at your fingertips! All that possibility! The anticipation!

So I'm going to share some of my favorite new(ish) author discoveries and the book(s) that helped put them on my radar.

I'd seen Kennedy Ryan's name often enough but wasn't familiar with her books. Then my friend Amber @ Du Livre messaged me that I had to read Long Shot. She had listened to it on audio so I did the same. And Oh. My. Goodness. I was floored. It was a tough read at times (one of the main characters was in an abusive relationship) but it was completely gripping and emotional and had me totally invested. I immediately binged the next two books, also on audio, and I am completely sold on Kennedy Ryan.

I downloaded the audio version of Intercepted on a whim as something fun to listen to on my commute. I had no idea how much I would end up loving it! I don't know if it was just the story or the fact that the narration was so perfect, or maybe a combination of both, but it was total enjoyment from start to finish. Alexa Martin made main character Marlee smart and sassy and nobody's fool. And the love interest? Oh yeah, I was a big fan of Gavin Pope. :) And now I'm super excited to continue the series with Fumbled.

I read an ARC of I Want You Back in March and knew immediately that I wanted to read more from Lorelei James. While the story wasn't super original or super memorable, it was still the kind of contemporary romance that I enjoy. (Not every book has to rip my heart to shreds, make me weep piteously, and leave me emotionally bruised and battered. Or so I tell myself.) Realistic characters and situations, believable dialogue, a couple that I connect with and makes me pull for their HEA... Lorelei James delivered that and more and now, since I Want You Back was the first in a spin-off series, I want to go back and devour the original series.

The Air He Breathes is a book that lingered on my bookshelf for a long time (like, at least two years). It was one of those books that I was sure I was going to love... therefore I wouldn't read it. (Yes, I know that is completely illogical but I do this all the time because I enjoy the anticipation.) While it wasn't a 5 star read (I gave it 4.25 stars), it was a story that I flew through and Brittainy C. Cherry made me truly care about her characters and I hurt when they hurt. I absolutely want to read the other books in the Elements series as well as the rest of her backlist. Oh, and her latest release, Eleanor & Gray.

Kandi Steiner was a name I'd seen and heard but I wasn't familiar with any of her work. Then I saw one of my favorite BookTubers rave about Steiner's What He Doesn't Know duet. I listened to both on audio, back to back, and was taken by surprise. Kandi managed to do the impossible: make me pull for one guy all through both books and then be happy when the other guy was chosen at the end. Now that's good writing. She didn't take the easy way out and make anyone the "bad guy." Instead, she showed each character as very human and very flawed. And now she has continued the story with a third book so I'm excited to read that one... and everything else she's written.
