Their love was supposed to last forever. But when life delivered blow after devastating blow, Yasmen and Josiah Wade found that love alone couldn’t solve or save everything.

It couldn’t save their marriage.

Yasmen wasn’t prepared for how her life fell apart, but she is finally starting to find joy again. She and Josiah have found a new rhythm, co-parenting their two kids and running a thriving business together. Yet like magnets, they’re always drawn back to each other, and now they’re beginning to wonder if they’re truly ready to let go of everything they once had.

Soon, one stolen kiss leads to another…and then more. It's hot. It's illicit. It's all good—until old wounds reopen. Is it too late for them to find forever? Or could they even be better, the second time around?

With every Kennedy Ryan novel I read, I feel at a complete loss to do them justice with a review. I don’t have adequate words to convey just how powerful and moving her writing is. Ryan’s latest, Before I Let Go, is no exception. She has woven a story of loss, healing, and second chances that is stunningly good.

To friends and family, Yasmen and Josiah were relationship goals - a shining example of a happy marriage – until they weren’t.  Blow after unexpected blow shook their once rock-solid marriage to its foundation and created a chasm they seemed unable to bridge.

Post-divorce, Josiah and Yasmen found a new normal: running their successful restaurant together and co-parenting their two children. What didn’t change was their deep love and respect for one another. Josiah never wanted the divorce and was shaken to his core when he lost the one thing he believed in, the one steady presence in his life that he was sure would never abandon him. Yasmen felt Josiah’s absence like a physical ache. He was her first love, but drowning under the weight of grief and trauma, divorce seemed the only option.

While Yasmen found a therapist she connected with and began to claw her way out of the darkness, Josiah only began therapy to serve as an example for his young son. Stubborn and skeptical at the start, Josiah started to confront past trauma and acknowledge the ways it had impacted his life, and his relationship with Yasmen.  Their lives were still irrevocably intertwined, between the children and the business, and their love for another was evidenced in every shared memory and inside joke. When a business trip forced them together, lines were crossed and all the old feelings that had been hidden under a layer of hurt and recrimination spark to life.

Before I Let Go was tender and poignant while packing a powerful emotional punch. There was laughter and tears and most importantly: hope. Yasmen and Josiah’s struggles felt all too realistic and the unexpected place they found themselves in was heart wrenching. The love was still there but buried under grief and pain.

Kennedy Ryan has been candid about her own struggles with depression and mental health, which came to a head while writing this novel. That intersection of real life and fiction likely went a long way in making this remarkable story that much more realistic. Ryan is a born storyteller and Before I Let Go is an achingly beautiful story of two people who stumbled and fell, only to travel a rocky road back in hope that it leads them home. 5 STARS

Review: Reel by Kennedy Ryan #NewRelease #BlogTour

Reel, an all new epic CONTEMPORARY STANDALONE love story from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Kennedy Ryan, is available now!

"Emotional, layered, sexy, and deeply satisfying, with stunning prose and a sweeping storyline, REEL is everything that has Kennedy Ryan fans devouring her books.”

--  Lexi Ryan, New York Times bestselling author

One moment in the spotlight.

For months I stood by, an understudy waiting in the wings, preparing for my time to shine.

I never imagined he would watch in the audience that night.

Canon Holt.

Famous film director.

Fascinating. Talented. Fine.

Before I could catch my breath, everything changed.

I went from backstage Broadway to center stage Hollywood.

From being unknown, to my name, Neevah Saint, on everyone’s lips.

Canon casts me in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic, catapulting me into another stratosphere.

But stars shine brightest in the dead of night.

Forbidden attraction, scandal and circumstances  beyond my control jeopardize my dream.

Could this one shot—the role of a lifetime, the love of a lifetime—cost me everything?

Neevah Saint has spent the last dozen years honing her craft, paying her dues, and that pays off in a big way when she takes the stage on Broadway – an understudy filling in for the lead actress – and is seen by none other than Canon Holt. A talented and highly respected director, Canon has spent the last six months searching for the lead in his upcoming movie. An actress with that elusive light and spark who will step into the role of a lifetime – a biopic of 1930’s/40’s singer Dessi Blue. Watching Neevah on stage, Canon knows he has found his Dessi. But the road to Canon’s labor of love is a bumpy one, filled with roadblocks, intense attraction, and decisions that will change lives.

The characters in Reel felt devastatingly realistic and I felt every heartbreak and every triumph. They were multi-layered and flawed and I absolutely did not want to say goodbye to them. Neevah was strong and independent, talented and ambitious, but had a softness and a warmth that drew people in. Her estrangement from her mother and sister was a hole in her life that she felt keenly and was a thread throughout the story that added such emotional import.

The opening chapter with Canon and his mother set the stage well in showing her impact on his life and the lasting effect she had on him. Talented, respected, driven, and with an almost single-minded focus, he tended to keep others at arm’s length. Having been burned before from an involvement with an actress he was directing, Canon was understandably gun shy when it came to Neevah. His focus and commitment to his work were staggering, and it made the slow burn relationship all the sweeter (and hotter). I loved the respect these two had for one another and the openness they shared. Their honesty and their connection were truly something special. And when faced with setbacks, doubts, and an uncertain future, that honesty and connection became everything.

I can’t imagine the amount of research that must have been undertaken to write Reel. The story within the story of Dessi Blue, and all the other African American artists and entertainers, was eye opening; an acknowledgment of and an open love letter to the scores of talented and groundbreaking performers whose contributions have largely been forgotten by history, because of the color of their skin.

Kennedy Ryan writes love stories that are felt soul deep while she seamlessly weaves in timely and relevant issues. The result is a story that engages both your heart and your mind. Ryan never fails to impress - her writing, her storytelling, is on another level and she continues to raise the bar with each new release. She has shown once again showed why she is an author I will return to time and time again. Reel was an incredible journey - beautiful, raw, emotional, unexpected - and will undoubtedly be among my top picks of the year.

WWW Wednesday #94 | July 1, 2020

I'm headed to an appointment with The Husband this morning and will probably work from home in the afternoon. So it kinda-sorta feels like a day off.

Weird to think it's July and the year is half over. And what a year it's been. Anyone have 4th of July plans? My city is actually moving forward with fireworks celebrations, because why not have large gatherings as our infection rate skyrockets. Makes total sense. *bangs my head against the wall* I'll be staying home and The Husband might throw a couple burgers on the grill. That's the extent of the celebration this year. Which, now that I think about it, is just like every other year because I never go out in the crowds to watch fireworks. So I was isolating before isolating was cool. LOL

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Currently reading: I started The Mall yesterday and so far, so good. It takes place in 1991 and all the pop culture references are making me laugh (and making me nostalgic).
Current progress: 12%

Currently listening: I also started The Rebel King yesterday. It picked up almost immediately after the first book ended, which is to say things are a mess and more then one character is in dire straits. I stopped listening last night at a scene so intense that I was practically holding my breath and starting to tear up. I can't wait to start listening again this morning!
Current progress: 12%

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
ReadLosing the Field. OMG, I don't even know what to say. I lost count of how many times I considered DNF'ing this train wreck. My dislike of both main characters only grew as the story progressed. I don't know whether to not waste my time and just skip reviewing it, or word vomit a review with all my ragey feelings. Gah!

Listened to: Perfect Love Story was my first by Natasha Madison and it was a good enough story. Both main characters were likable, and the premise was good, but the execution was a little lacking for me. The writing was unnecessarily detailed at times and some of the scenes felt repetitive. So it was one of those that was a nice enough story and a good way to pass the time, but nothing particularly memorable.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

What are you currently reading?
I wanna know! :)

Blog / Promo Tour: Queen Move by Kennedy Ryan

QUEEN MOVE - BT banner

I never miss a chance to sing the praises of Kennedy Ryan. I've read six of her books so far and I continue to work my way through both her backlist and her new releases. She is one of those rare breed of authors for me - one who is capable of creating characters who are so multi-dimensional that they feel completely real, and testing them in ways that is utterly realistic. She writes in a way that engages all my emotions and has me fully invested every time. So it's no surprise that I am plenty excited for her latest release, Queen Move. Are you ready for Kimba and Ezra's story? Because I sure am.

QUEEN MOVE CHAIR AN TEASER

Excerpt:
“You’re fucking brilliant.”
“Huh?” Ezra asks absentmindedly, paying more attention to the flame under his pan than to my compliment. “What’d you say?”
“I said you’re brilliant.” I hold up the iPad I’m using to read his manuscript. “Your book, the YLA story, is incredible, Ez.”
“Oh. Thanks.” He flashes me a smile and then goes back to his French toast. “The key to getting this right is the milk-to-bread ratio.”
I hop off the counter and walk over to stand beside him at the stove. “Would you forget about your French toast for a minute and listen to me?”
“But it’s stuffed French toast.” He takes the pan off the burner and pulls me into his arms. “And I could listen to you all day. What were you saying? Something about me being a handsome, sexy genius?”
“Um…those weren’t my exact words.” I laugh up at him.
“I could have sworn that’s what you said, and I’m never wrong.” He slides his hands over my ass in a pair of his boxer shorts. “Some even say I’m fucking brilliant.”
“They probably just like your big dick,” I whisper and blink up at him as innocently as I can manage.
“I get that a lot.” He drops a kiss on my head and turns back to his French toast. I lean down to rest an elbow on the counter and watch him work.
“A lot?” I ask teasingly. “Have there been a lot?”
He pauses mid-toast-flip and slants me a glance. “Are you asking how many people I’ve had sex with?”
“I mean, it’s none of my business. If you don’t want to—”
“Eight.”
Eight?
Lord above, only eight?!
“Oh.” I straighten and rest my hip against the counter. “What a, um, single-digit number that is.”
“What about you?”
What about me? I’m tabulating years of hook-ups, one-night stands, fuck bois and carrying the one.
“If you don’t want to,” he says, cracking an egg into a bowl, “it’s fine. I don’t care how many people—”
“I don’t know.”
He glances up from whisking eggs, a small frown puckering his dark brows. “You don’t know what?”
“My number. I don’t know how many people I’ve been with.”
He resumes whisking, his frown clearing. “Oh.”
The whisking eggs and whirring refrigerator are the only sounds in the kitchen. I’ve never been embarrassed by my choices. I enjoy sex. I’ve had it with a lot of people. People I really liked…or tolerated…but didn’t want to commit to. I’ve always been safe and never mean about it. I was upfront, and when someone wanted more, I let them know “more” wasn’t an option.
“I just never…” I cross my arms over my stomach, fold one bare foot over the other. “I haven’t been interested in committed relationships. There hasn’t been anyone I wanted that with.”
“Tru.” He stops whisking and gives me the full impact of his undivided attention. His eyes are placid blue. No shadows or undercurrents. “I don’t care.” Ezra pushes the bowl aside and faces me. “But there is something I feel like we should be clear on regarding how you’ve handled sex in the past.”
Here we go.
“You’ve never wanted to commit before,” he says.
“Right. I’ve never wanted any strings attached.”
“I know I said we could be just sex, no emotional attachments.” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “But I feel like I have to be honest with you. Having you back in my life has been…it’s been exactly what I need, and what I felt last night… I’ve never felt that way before.”
I’m not even sure my heart is beating, but it also feels like there’s a tumult in my chest. “What are you saying, Ez?”
His mouth flattens into a hard line and his jaw hardens to stone. “I want strings.”
“Y-you do?”
“I want strings.” He links our fingers, strokes his thumb across my palm. “Ropes, if necessary. I want anything that keeps you with me and me with you and tells everyone else don’t even think about it.”
I’m stunned and incredibly turned on, but that doesn’t take much where Ezra’s concerned.
“You…you do?” I ask faintly…again.
“I wouldn’t do well sharing you.”
