Top Ten Tuesday: Oldies Edition | Books That Have Been on My TBR the Longest

This week's Top Ten Tuesday topic:
Books That Have Been on My TBR the Longest

This week's prompt is actually Books I've Added to My TBR and Forgotten Why. But I do a pretty thorough culling on my TBR on a regular basis so I tend to ditch those books that I'm no longer interested in reading, or can't remember why I added them in the first place. So instead I'm going to share the books that have been on my TBR the longest. The ones that I really do still want to read... but they've been waiting in the wings longer than any others. These poor books are like...

All of these (poor, neglected) books were added to my TBR between 2012-2014. Yeah, I feel sorry for them, too.

As much as I love K.A. Tucker, and as many books of hers that I've read, I still haven't got around to Burying Water (and the rest of the Burying Water series).
I've been reading Lisa Jewell since 2001 (according to Goodreads), and I love her story telling. Whether it's romance or domestic dramas or mysteries, she does it all well. But this one has been lingering on my TBR for years.
I'm sure I'll love it, and so many people consider it a favorite, but it just hasn't happened yet.
Back in the day I was obsessed with Outlander. I read the first book in 2000 (twenty years ago... can that be right??? gah!) and devoured the few couple until I caught up with Gabaldon. Then the long waits between books started. But there did come a point where I kind of burned out on the series and I stalled at the sixth book.
This is the one on this list that I'm on the fence about. At one time this series was huge. Everyone was reading it. And I kinda/sorta still do want to read it. But I also might be over it. It stays on the list for now... but its position is precarious.
I've never been one for YA fantasy (or any fantasy, really), but so many friend raved about this series and swore I would love it. Maybe one day I'll get the urge to pick it up.
If I had to pick one another book that was a little iffy, it would be this one. It came out in 2012 and I remember it making a splash at the time. New adult was big at the time and this was a dark new adult, which was new. But my interest has definitely waned a bit over the years.
This poor book has been sitting on my shelf for years. And I really do still want to read it.
Okay, Sophie is going to kill me for this one. LOL The first book in the trilogy, The Bronze Horseman, became an instant all-time favorite when I read it in 2013. I mean, I seriously loved it. But it also destroyed me and I decided to hold off on reading the second book. And, well, here we are seven years later. At this point I will absolutely have to reread the first book before picking this one up.
My reason for not reading this one yet is embarrassingly simple: it intimidates me. I'm worried that I will be hopelessly lost by the time travel aspect and just muddle through the book in a state of confusion. But I still want to read it. Quite the conundrum.

Have you read any of these books?
What should I bump to the top of the TBR?

  1. The Time Traveler's Wife was a great story. FWIW, I didn't find it intimidating at all. The narrator explained everything, including the time travel stuff, very thoroughly.

  2. I have avoided Bright Side for a long time, because I have heard how heartbreaking it is. I loved the VA books though, and the spin off too.

    1. I seem to have no issue reading book (after book) that breaks my heart and makes me cry, but some some reason I feel like I'll have to force myself to read Bright Side.

  3. My two cents is that I liked but didn't love Time Traveler's Wife. And it's a long book, which is not my favorite sort.

  4. Great list! I've heard so many good things about The Winner's Curse, too, and I'd really like to try Vampire Academy.

    1. It seems like *everyone* was reading The Winner's Curse 5-6 years ago and so many friends told me I would love it. I'm hanging on to it for now.

  5. Tanya, how have you been darling? I absolutely loved The Winners Curse, it's very mild fantasy and feels much more like a historical read. Forbidden is a book I tried to read years ago, everyone was raving how good it is, found it very uncomfortable. I'm really interested to see what you think of it, very strange indeed.

    1. Hi Kelly! *waves wildly* I'm glad you mentioned that about The Winner's Curse. Knowing it feels more historical than fantasy makes me feel more like I'd enjoy it.

  6. I think you would love Burying Water. It's one of my favorite books from K.A Tucker. That whole series is great.
I also love The Winner's Curse series and VA, of course! I remember being curious about Forbidden but it sounded so sad.

    1. I love hearing that, Nick! And I'm sure I'll love it, too. I don't think I've ever read anything from Tucker that let me down.

  7. I read The Time Traveler's Wife ages ago and I enjoyed it, despite the fact that it's not my usual kind of read, so I hope you do too.

  9. I have so many of those books just hanging out on my TBR, too. We still want to read them, and yet there they languish! :) The only one here that I've read is The Winner's Curse and I think I remember enjoying it quite a bit! Tatiana and Alexander has always drawn my eye as well.

  10. Okay, you need to put Bright Side at the very top of your TBR. Such a great bok.

  13. The Time Traveler's Wife wasn't a confusing read, but it is super-long!

  14. LOL at that skeleton graphic! The Time Traveler's Wife is the only one of these I've read and it was just an okay read for me. It has been a while since I read it but I think I loved it at first but then got a little bored with it because as others have mentioned, it's a long book.

    1. That's what I keep hearing, Suzanne. It might be time to remove that one from the TBR.

  15. Good on you for doing a thorough culling on your TBR on a regular basis. A friend forced me to read The Time Traveler's Wife. I tried reading it, but I couldn't get into it. Many people seem to like it, though!

  17. I've had Forbidden on my actual shelves for YEARS and still need to read it. Hopefully we can both get to it soon. It's fared many years of me going through my shelves and getting rid of things, so obviously, I DO want to read it. hah

    1. K.A. Tucker is a long-time favorite of mine but for some reason I've just never got around to that series.

  20. Oh wow, I literally JUST checked out Burying Water from the library (heard of but never read Tucker before, and this is the only one they have) and took a peek at it today. I'm too excited to dig in yet, but it looks like a nice thick wedge of story to settle in with when I do.

Also I had no idea that Jewell had been writing so long, wow. I assumed she was a brand new name.

And finally, Bright Side is on my TBR too -- it actually caught my eye because the Spanish cover came up in my Goodreads recs (IDK why that version, since I can't speak or read Spanish), and it was so gorgeous I had to investigate what it was about. That cover is seriously so much prettier that when I do get my hands on the book, I'm pretty sure that's the one I'm gonna keep on my GR shelves.

    1. What a coincidence that you just got Burying Water! Your excitement over it has me wanting to move it to the top of the pile. :) I already know I love Tucker, so I'm fairly certain it will be a winner for me.

Hopefully we'll both love Burying Water *and* Bright Side!

  21. I did not enjoy the second book of The Bronze Horseman. It was definitely a good book in helping you understand the struggles people experienced after the war, but it was so sad as far as Tatiana and Alexander's relationship went. I have been wanting to reread The Bronze Horseman, though. It is for sure one of my all-time favorites. And you definitely need to read Bright Side!!

    1. I've seen that from a lot of people, Alison. Comments that the second and third books are not as strong. But I definitely want to complete the trilogy... at some point. :)

  22. Vampire Academy! Oh, I loved that series... I need to re-read it at some point and see if it's as good for me now. I'll always remember being 6.5 months pregnant and bussing it into town while it was snowing to grab book 6 on release day. I REFUSED to wait until my husband could drive me at the weekend as it was my day off from work and I was bingeing that book! lol. I spent the rest of the day warm, cosy and happy as a clam... Good times.
