The Sunday Post #181

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's a chance to share news - a post to recap the past week on your blog,
showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is
coming up on your blog in the week ahead. You can find the info here:

  • Fall finally decided to make a brief appearance! *does happy dance and throws confetti* Friday, Saturday and today had temps in the 60's and as I write this (very early Sunday morning) it's in the 40's. I. Am. Loving. It! Never mind that it's jumping right back up to 80 tomorrow... because for now it feels absolutely delicious outside.
  • The Husband and I ran a few errands yesterday but it was much more casual than last weekend. Even got (most of) the grocery shopping done so that's one less thing to do today. *does another happy dance*
  • It was a busy week at the office, but not a bad one. One boss has been working an abbreviated schedule since he's still recovering from knee replacement surgery and another boss is headed to Las Vegas this week for a conference (what a rough job, right?).
  • Today is my nephew's birthday... happy 24th to Shane!

Tomorrow (in the U.S.) is Veterans Day. A federal holiday
to honor all who have served the country, in war or peace, dead or alive, although it's largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices.

Today I honor my husband, Robert, who served this country for 21 years. As a Chief Hospital Corpsman he was often stationed with the Marines, who usually referred to him as "Doc." In times of crisis, when others took cover, it was Robert who ran toward danger and to the injured. During Operation Desert Storm it was Robert who helped mobilize the Navy's medical personnel and ensure they were at the ready and in place when needed. He served his time both on U.S. soil - in North Carolina, in Georgia, in Illinois, and in Florida at the Navy's Experimental Diving Unit - and on missions that took him to Columbia, Croatia, Beirut, Mogadishu and more.

Robert is a patriot to his core. He was called to serve - and would do it all again. I am in awe of his honor and integrity and sacrifice. It is humbling. And not just today, but especially today, I thank him and so many others who have placed service above self.

Top Ten Tuesday: Autumn Edition

Monthly Wrap-Up | October 2019

WHAT I COMPLETED IN THE LAST WEEK:

It took 12 days, but I finally finished The Bromance Book Club. I think it was 50% that I was kinda/sorta in a reading slump and 50% that I had such issues with one of the main characters and that equated to a less than stellar reading experience. But there was still plenty that I enjoyed. Etched in Bone was the final book in The Others series that took place at the Lakeside Courtyard and no matter how many times I listen to the series, it's always bittersweet to say goodbye to those characters.

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING:

Trusting Winter - Lora Richardson

After being semi-slumpish for the last month or so, this latest release from Lora Richardson is exactly what I needed. I sing Lora's praises every chance I get and if you enjoy YA contemporary and haven't read anything from Lora yet, you are so missing out. I just started this one on Friday and I'm already at the 80% mark (that's fast for me!). I am loving every minute of Trusting Winter - and the cover is making me all kinds of happy.

By the way, Trusting Winter is only $0.99 on Amazon right now... and free if you have Kindle Unlimited!

Nothing this week.

How was your week? Any new books? Any news to share?
I'd love to hear about it!

  1. Ok I just one clicked on that book Tanya! I'll make room to read it next month (as I am buried in ARCs this month! And I so love the admiration you have , rightfully so, for your husband! Now let's hope that Fall will get back to you form now on!

    1. Yay! I hope you'll enjoy it, Sophie. I read very little YA but I make exceptions for a small handful of authors and Lora Richardson is one of those.

  2. I thank your husband for his service, and also all our active and retired service people out there. I am glad you finally finished Bromance and liked it. I loved that book. I think I read it really fast too. I haven't been outside today, but we are going below freezing in these parts. I am not quite ready for it, but I don't really have a choice. Stay warm!

    1. Thank you, Sam. :) Below freezing? Yikes. I think I'll stick with my brand of "cold" down here.

  3. What is Thea you had issues with in The Bromance Book Club? Cause lots of people did. Its why I didn't give the book 5 stars.
Thanks to your husband for his service. I come from a military family-dad, uncle, grandfather-and I know that service isn't easy and its more than just a job.

    1. I didn't find Thea very sympathetic. And maybe that was the author's fault for making the beginning of the from Gavin's POV so I was much more sympathetic to him. He onbiously adored his wife and children. By the time Thea *finally* voiced her issues it was too late for me. I was annoyed that she has kept silent for THREE YEARS instead of talking to Gavin. And yet blamed him for not noticing. Grrr!

  4. I, also, thank your husband for his service!
It is so funny that you are talking about finally getting fall weather, when my area is expecting a snow storm with coming week. LOL
    Have a great week!

A snow storm? Ack! I think I'll stick with my idea of cold... which is about 50 degrees. LOL

  5. Thank you to your husband for his service!

Our weather is getting pretty chilly around here - we might even get our first snow this week!

  6. Happy Veteran's Day to your hubby and thanks to him for his service to our country! I'm loving the fall weather here too, although we took a dip down to the 20s a couple of nights ago that I could have done without, lol.

  7. Your husband sounds like quite a great man. Extend our thanks to him for his service and the many sacrifices I'm sure he made while in service.

Our weather can't make up it's mind. One day we're in the 40s but sunny, the next day 60s and rainy, and then 80s with a breeze. I wish it would make up it's mind. I'd be good with 60s with a nice breeze.

    Have a great week:)

I was surprised (and happy) to see how similarly we felt about The Bromance Book Club. We are definitely in the minority with that one!

  9. Yes!! We finally had some cool weather too. We even *gasp* left a window open for awhile! Trusting Winter looks really cute! I hope you love it!

  10. My hats off to Robert! I am enjoying cooler temps here but not the 20s a couple of the nights. I'm surprised about the Bromance Book Club as I have seen so many good reviews. I didn't request an ARC but I have the audio on reserve at the library.

Have a wonderful week and enjoy some great reads!

Yeah, I'm definitely in minority with The Bromance Book Club. Almost everyone else has really loved it. Proof that not every book works for everybody, I guess. :)

  17. There's an impressive record of service! Your husband sounds like a wonderful man. Yay for cooler weather! I wish I could say the same. We're high 80's all week here, but I'm going up to my daughter's again on Thursday and it's nicer in Northern California. Low-mid 70s.

Nice to hear your getting out of your book slump with a go-to author! I hate book slumps.

  18. Thanks to your hubs for his service!! I haven't read a Lora Richardson. I will definitely have to check her out!

  19. Not gonna lie, I thought I'd commented already! It's lovely that you're honouring your husband for veterans day, he did a lot to serve his country and him, along with every other person who has served, deserves this recognition as I don't think people realise the sacrifice folks make.

Sorry The Bromance Book Club wasn't better for you, but you finished it! There is nothing better than finally finishing a book that feels like it's dragged on for too long so hopefully your next book will be better.

    1. Doesn't that drive you crazy? Feeling sure you've already commented but it's nowhere to be found? Gah!

Thanks so much for your kind words. I've been sharing the comments with my husband and he's been so moved.

You're so right! When you struggle through a book it is extra satisfying to finally finish it! :)

  20. Your husband sounds really impressive, I'm turning 23 in November, so he's basically served as long as my lifetime, which... wow. And you're wonderful to honor him - and other veterans - like this. :)

We are opposites, haha. I'm dreading fall and winter, and even though I was really weirded out by the unusually warm fall weather we had in Hungary, it was still better than the cold! Also, this past week it's been raining so much here, which is another thing I hate about the fall.

I need to get to the Others series!! Last month I finally read my first Ilona Andrews series, and I really want to try other adult paranormal authors I've been curious about for a while.

The Bromance Book Club... eh. I know you had a problem with the heroine, and god knows she was badly written imo, but I had a problem with everything and everyone, haha. It all felt so... half-assed. The kids were such a big part at first - as they should have been - and then they just weren't really in the picture as much. It was weird, especially because it was a huge deal that one of the twins was taking Thea's side completely. Also, Gavin had this whole revelation about missing SO MUCH because of traveling, and then this topic was never approached again? I know that's because there probably is no solution - that's his job, and all - but still. As for Thea, how Gavin moved out of the bedroom and wouldn't talk to her for a month was... rough, to say the least. I get why she was all "cut him loose" especially given her own family... but I don't think this was well-written. *shrug* Her feelings never really came through, which was a disappointment. Sorry for the rant, but ugh, this went from being a potential favorite to... I don't even know what that was.

    1. Oh wow, my husband's oldest grandson is older than you. I'm not going to tell him that, though. LOL But thanks for your kinds words.

Iimagine you get a whole lot more cold weather than I do. For me, it's a novelty so I enjoy it when I can.

Sorry that Bromance didn't work for you, either. Although I think I liked it a bit more than you did. It's always disapoointing when a book you have such high hopes for fails to deliver. :(
