WWW Wednesday #86 | May 6, 2020

WWW Wednesdays is a meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words.
Just answer three questions and share what you're reading.

Florida is apparently leading the charge at reopening businesses. In my city, the mayor is allowing stores and restaurants to reopen, albeit at 25% capacity. I think it's way too soon and I plan to continue on as usual, holed up at home, being part of the solution and not part of the problem. I will not be one of those people who were on the news Monday night, rushing back to dine in a restaurant. Insanity. This is all temporary. There will come a time when it's safe to go back to regular life (in whatever form that takes), but I really don't think that time is now. People confound me. *sigh* How are things in your area?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Currently reading: I'm totally enjoying Big Summer but I'm also making my way through it slowly. #1) I haven't made a lot of time for reading this past week and #2) I like to savor Jennifer Weiner's books. She has a way of turning a phrase or writing a line that is so perfectly said that I often sit back and just let it soak in. Oh, and this morning something happened that stopped me in my tracks and had me setting the book down in total surprise. Whoa. I did not see that coming.
Current progress: 49%

Currently listening: I just started Royally Yours yesterday so I'm barely into it but that doesn't matter. Emma Chase always pulls me in from the start. And the fact that Andi Arndt and Shane East are narrating is the cherry on top.
Current progress: 12%

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?
What I read: Sure Shot was good start to finish. I liked it even more than Superfan, the previous book in the series. It was impossible not to fall for Bess and Tank. My review won't post until May 15 in conjunction with the blog tour for the book release.

What I listened to: I won't vent too much about A Stone in the Sea, other than to say that I have officially given Jackson a fair shot and can confidently say her writing style is not for me. Hasta la vista, baby. (Mega-bonus points if you can name what 80's song that comes from. And yes, it was before Ah-nold said it in The Terminator. LOL)

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

I really enjoyed the first book, Storm and Fury, but even so it's didn't quite live up to the original trilogy for me. (The Harbinger series is a spin-off of Armentrout's Dark Elements trilogy.) So, while I'm interested to find out where the story goes in Rage and Ruin, I'm not totally invested in main characters Layla and Zayne. Is it wrong that I'm most excited to revisit the original characters who appear in this series as secondary characters? :)

What are you currently reading?
I wanna know! :)

  1. I get so stressed when hearing about states opening up. It is too soon! I just don't understand what is going on in this country. I really loved that Sarina Bowen series, but I'm a little behind. I didn't want to read Superfan because I'm not into celeb romances. I hope Rage & Ruin is good for you!
Have a good week, Tanya! :)

    1. I agree, Nick. People (including the people in charge) are just pushing to reopen too fast. I worry about the repercussions. Superfan didn't overdo the celebrity aspect (IMO) and a lot of it was from Silas's POV. But I can understand if it just isn't for you. :)

  2. Can Sure Shot and Royally Yours be read as standalones or it's better to read the series in order?

    1. Hi Liina - I think both Sure Shot and Royally Yours could be read as standalones with no problem. I hope you'll enjoy them if you give them a try! :)

  3. I don't know, from what they are saying, life will never be the same. This virus will come back. I think giving people the choice is ok. NJ opened the state parks and golf coursed on Sat, I did not rush to go out to those places, by choice. Glad to hear Sure Shot was good. I had pre-ordered, but have yet to start that spinoff. I feel good about it though

    1. Yep, I keep reading these reports of there being several waves of the virus. And any kind of vaccine being more than a year out. So this rush to "return to normal" just boggles my mind.

I hope you'll love Sure Shot when you get to it. But it's Sarina Bowen, so how could you not? :)

  4. Royally Yours was a fun read. I'm actually reading Tommy Sullivan's book from that series now.

    1. Aw, I liked Tommy from the last books (Royally Endowed?). I'm excited for his story. Hope you're enjoying it!

  5. I think because I read the first Harbinger book before I read the first Dark Elements book, I feel differently about the characters than some die hard Dark Elements fans. I need to finish the Dark Elements series, though.

    1. I can get that. I think whatever you read first is usually the one you're most connected to. You have a history with those characters. :)

  6. I've been on kind of a darker trend the last couple weeks. I'm currently listening to If It Bleeds by Stephen King. I'll need to switch to something lighter after that!

    1. I do the same, Ethan. After a darker read I crave something light and easy.

  8. Yeah, I would definitely not be eating in a restaurant right now, no matter how few people were there!

    1. Right?! I am amazed at the number of people rushing back to eat in restaurants.

  9. I've never read a book by Jennifer Weiner, but it looks like I need to remedy that. I love when a book surprises me and makes me want to just sit, take it all in, and think on it. I love Emma Chase and have her Royally series on my TBR. I have Rage and Ruin for review too, and while I'm excited, I loved the Elements Trilogy even more.

I'm in California, and our governor is opening up some book stores, florists, sporting goods stores, and clothing stores, but I believe it's only curbside pickup. Either way, I'm lying low. and still going to be sheltering in place.

    1. Emma Chase's Royally series is so much fun and have surprisingly emotional moments in them. Actually, all her series are like that.

I just want all Roth, all the time. LOL I love that he appears in The Harbinger series. :)

I'm with you, still staying in and keeping my distance, despite things starting to reopen.

  10. I am happy things are opening up (I was never for the closure as I am a conservative and especially if you look at the numbers of other deaths that are highly rising of other ailments and illnesses and are dying in their homes because they can't get treatment -I had a friend die from cancer because of the closures and couldn't get the treatments she needed so I am pretty sensitive about it) but I think states need to be safe while doing it. Not sure what procedures Florida is implementing. But here (I live in Utah) we are doing it slowly and carefully with procedures to keep the public as safe as we can while getting people back to work again and getting our freedoms back. Hopefully Florida is taking the right precautions. (sorry if I rambled or offended you, always respect your view highly even if it differs from my view, great thing about living in this glorious country right? :)

I LOVE Emma Chase's Royal series, those books are so dang good. And her writing is so engaging. So I hope you end up loving that one. And I see Armentrout's book up next for you. LOVE her stuff. I need to get back to reading her. I know she probably won't be writing for much longer with her health status (she is going blind if you weren't aware) but love her work and her ability to captivate her readers.

Hope you are having a good week darling.

    1. So sorry to hear about your friend. Any loss is sad. Hopefully we can all reopen safely. (And no offense taken in the least. We all have different opinions and that's perfectly fine.)

I just love Emma Chase. Her Royally series is loads of fun and so are her other series, for that matter. :) Jennifer Armentrout is one of my long-time favorites and is practically an auto-buy author for me. I basically read anything she writes. Her books are just so addictive!

  11. Yeah, it's scary. Everyone goes back and then it rebounds? Then we're stuck inside longer? Or worse - we don't give a damn anymore so whatever? I don't know.

WA is going slow but people are defying orders. Same with OR where I live very close to.

I am reading more and it seems like you've found a few good reads so yay!

    1. It's hard to even know what the right answers are. But surely an abundance of caution can't hurt. Apparently my city made national news Tuesday because a bunch of idiots gathered at a taco stand for Cinco de Mayo and refused to socially distance. Police had to be called. Lovely.

So glad you are reading again! *throws confetti*

  12. I'm giving up on humanity. People are being so unbelievably stupid in their attitudes towards the virus/reopening that I just cant people anymore.
We're waiting on an announcement from our government on what comes next but it's likely they'll start opening up things here in England despite the devolved governments of Wales and Scotland (not sure on NI) continuing with lockdown for another 3 weeks. The freaking gutter press had headlines screaming about "Freedom" and other celebratory nonsense when it was leaked... I'm personally not seeing how we're ready to start slowly reopening when our death toll is the highest in Europe and is still in the hundreds daily! Just because hundreds are an improvement over thousands... Muppetry. Like you, I'll be continuing to stay home as much as possible for a while longer regardless of what is announced.

I totally get where you're coming from with Rage and Ruin. I still haven't read Storm and Fury yet because I'm not a huge Zayne fan... I was always team Roth. I'll get to them eventually and I'm sure I'll even learn to love Zayne! But I'm no longer feeling the burning need to read them immediately.

    1. It's pretty frustrating/disheartening to see so many people ignore the guidelines and carry on as normal. And putting others at risk.

I totally read the Dark Elements trilogy for Roth. I was all about that Crown Prince of Hell. LOL And when he made an appearance in Storm and Fury I was thrilled. I saw some teasers from JLA for Rage and Ruin that included Roth again so I'm diving into R&R today. :)

  13. Things in Kentucky are slowly opening this month - some are the 15th, others are the 20th I think, and so on. I like that it's slow going, with stipulations on capacity, but I'm definitely not rushing out to do anything either. I'll stay home as much as I can for awhile too. It's still not over, and I don't want to risk things.

Glad you are liking Big Summer. I haven't read anything by the author, but this one sounds interesting to me.

    1. Right, despite things opening, the virus hasn't gone anywhere. And it feels like, here at least, people have decided that "hey things are open, we have the all clear!" Recipe for disaster.

Big Summer was wonderful. I really enjoy Weiner's writing.

  14. Tone Loc, right? He says it at the end of Funky Cold Medina? Didn't know that was before Arnold said it, lol!

Yeah, it's hard to imagine reopening everything when I'm in a N95 mask all day at work around any patient, and I have to wear a surgical mask in the hallways and around the hospital in general. This is because we have no idea who actually has covid-19! I guess if you're at a safe distance in a restaurant then that might be okay, but what if you have to go to the restroom? You touch all the surfaces everyone else does. I'd have to be sanitizing at every turn. I think continuing to stay away from crowds is a wise choice. I'll be doing the same.

    1. Oh my gosh, you are so right, Rachel! And that wasn't even the song I was thinking about. Apparently more than one singer decided to use that phrase. LOL I was actually thinking of Looking for a New Love by Jody Watley (1987).

  15. I think a lot of people in my area are just done with the restrictions. My state opened on Monday but my county is still supposed to be under orders until May 18. I found out Monday morning that I was expected to be at work at my regular starting time and that we would be in the office for 40 hours this week. I found out at 6:00 am and start the day at 8:00 so I had basically no notice. I am going to stick to just going to work and coming home but people are out and about everywhere.

I really need to start reading the Emma Chase series and plan to read Sure Shot this weekend. I hope you are having a good week!

  16. I'm still staying home in Florida also! I've only been out in the last two months to take my dog to the vet and to get his medication. I also did curbside pickup a few times when I was desperate to do something different! XD I definitely agree it's way too soon for things to open. I really need to hurry up and read Storm & Fury!

    1. It's pretty frustrating to see how hard Desantis seems to be pushing to reopen things. I won't be rushing right out, that's for sure. Crazy how curbside pick-up has now become an exciting outing. LOL It's been a year since I read Storm and Fury so I feel like I need a refresher before diving into Rage and Ruin!

  17. A few places are supposed to start opening up here on May 15th and I'm very nervous about it and like you, will continue to stay at home as much as possible. I just finished Big Summer today and really enjoyed it. I agree that it took a completely unexpected turn though, had me running back to the synopsis to see if I had missed something obvious.
