WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

    

 I haven't made a lot of time to read this past week but I am about halfway through The Boy & His Ribbon. It's a bit sad and a bit dark and it's probably the absolute wrong thing to be reading right now but, even so, I'm pretty hooked on the story. 

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

 Till Death was further proof that Jennifer L. Armentrout never lets me down. I was on-board for the mystery, I was on-board for the romance... this one was an entertaining page-turner that really hit the spot.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

    

If my fragile heart is up to it, I might continue with The Ribbon Duet and read The Girl & Her Ren. More likely I'm going to need some rather mindless brain candy and I might go for super light and fluffy like Abbi Glines' Sea Breeze series. I've only read the first book so next up is Because of Low.

Not much to say about this week other than it's been rough. There have been some nice moments, though. An impromptu family dinner after a hospital visit to see my father Thursday night. And my mom and my younger sister were at my house for dinner last night. Both were good times that helped lighten the mood and I'm thankful for them.

The Fragile Ordinary fell into the good-not-great category 

but Till Death was a real winner.

Lucian, nicknamed Lucifer by the paparazzi, is the youngest of the de Vincent brothers. Known for his playboy persona, Lucian is charming but aloof. That changes when Lucian takes it upon himself to hire a live-in nurse to care for a family member – and the sparks fly. Julia needs a change in her life and taking a job in New Orleans seems like the fresh start she needs. She’s quickly drawn into the web of the mysterious de Vincent family. While she’s drawn to Lucian, the scandals and secrets surrounding the family cannot be ignored. And while whispers of a de Vincent family curse seemed far-fetched at first, the more time Julia spends surrounded by the enigmatic family, the more she starts to fear for her own safety.

It was easy to get sucked into the lives of the de Vincent family. From the complicated family dynamics, to the strange goings-on at the family’s mansion, there was plenty to keep me turning the pages. I warmed to Julia from the start. Caring and compassionate, hard-working and rational, Julia was determined to do her best for her patient while dealing with a past that keeps coming back to haunt her, and her growing attraction to Lucian. And speaking of Lucian (Mr. Dark and Brooding himself), I was so on-board for this guy. The flippant attitude and acerbic wit hid plenty of emotional baggage, so it was all the more rewarding to see him soften when around Julia and finally open up with someone. Armentrout did a great job at creating a consistent low-key foreboding atmosphere and I ate it up. An exciting climax, a big reveal and a great set-up for the next book has me so ready to continue this series.

Moonlight Sins is a tricky one to categorize. Contemporary romance? Definitely. But there’s also a gothic feel. And a bit of mystery/suspense. And perhaps just a hint of the paranormal? The jury is still out on that last aspect but I’ll be the first in line for the next books to find out.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

    

 I didn't pick up either of the books I mentioned in last week's post. Instead I grabbed Till Death by Jennifer L. Armentrout which had been sitting on my shelf for far too long. It's unlike her usual contemporary romance or paranormal/fantasy. Instead this is more romantic suspense and I am so into it! I'm at about the 60% mark and can hardly put it down. 

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

   

 The Fragile Ordinary was good... but not as good as I anticipated. I might have liked it better had I not read it immediately after One Small Thing by Erin Watt. I couldn't help but compare the two (both YA contemporaries) and The Fragile Ordinary just came up a little lacking.

And then there was a resounding DNF. I very rarely encounter a book that is so not for me, that so completely rubs me the wrong way for whatever reason, that I quit it... but If Only fits the bill. I don't think I even made it through the first chapter. I disliked the writing style *so* much that I just couldn't. Ugh. Be gone with you book!

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'LL READ NEXT?

     

I'm sticking with the same two I mentioned last week. Both of these sound like good possibilities after I finish Till Death. So either The Boy & His Ribbon (if I feel like angsty romance) or Deity (if I feel like YA urban fantasy/paranormal).
