June #ShelfLove Challenge: Mid-Year Check-In

June topic: Mid-year check in post. How are you doing with the challenge? Look back at your January post and let us know how you are doing. Share an updated picture or list of your TBR pile.

Back in January I joined the #ShelfLove Challenge. People have different goals for the year-long challenge (reading what they own, buying less books, finishing series, etc) but for me it's been more about reading the books that I've been excited about for a long time but kept putting off. It could be because I was requesting ARC's and reading those instead. Or because I was getting sucked into the latest releases that everyone was raving about. And that always meant the books I really wanted to read were taking a backseat. So I decided that 2016 was going to be the year of me reading what I wanted to read.

So how's that been going for me? :) In January I set my goal at 31-40 books, meaning of all the books I read in 2016, at least 31 of them will be books already in my personal library. I've read 41 books so far this year and of those 16 count toward the #ShelfLove Challenge. So I'm right at the halfway point of the low end of my goal. I'm right on target for the year but I'll need to be diligent about choosing the books I already have and want to read over all the shiny new pretties. :)

I don't have any pics of my TBR because I don't keep an actual stack of physical books as my TBR. I just mentally make note of what I what to read and go with it. But there are certain books that I very much want to read by the end of the year that would count toward my goal. A few of them are:

Are you participating in challenges this year? Now that the year is half over, how's your progress? Are you where you want to be?

  1. Great job being about halfway through to your goal!
Do you have a Goodreads shelf for your TBR? Cause that's what I use and you can refer to that as your pile :)

    1. Thanks Julie! And that's a great idea about the GR shelf... I might have to do that.

  2. Great job! This is seriously impressive- and something I need to do next year! I think I've only read 4 books that weren't review books so far. Oops? That's not great! Keep up the great work 😊

    1. Thanks Shannon - yep, that's just why I did it. I had all these fabulous books at home that I bought and was excited for and yet I kept requesting/reading ARC's... just because I could. I decided I was so over it. I'm loving reading from my shelf and remembering what got me excited about certain books to start with. :)

    1. Thanks Lora! I'm thrilled to hear you say that about Making Faces! It has been on my shelf for *so long* and I hear nothing but raves. It will definitely happen by the end of the year. And, by the way, I'm so happy I made an exception in order to read The Edge of Jupiter... it was so worth it!!

  5. I have been trying to read more non-review books and I love it - no pressure, just reading for fun :)

    1. Exactly, Jen! I've scaled back on review books drastically. And I've never been happier. :)

    1. Those are actually the two I'm most excited about, Grace! Everyone raves about Making Faces and I'm so excited for it. And I have a friend who gushed about Who Do You Love Last Year. It sounds like my kind of story.

    1. I swear, I think I'm officially the last person around to read Amy Harmon. What have I been doing with my life?! I'm about 40% into Killing Sarai and enjoying it.

  8. Well hey, at least you're right on track. Good job! That's pretty then succumbing completely to new releases. Which is my problem. I'm constantly looking at my back list titles and being like yea, I'm still excited to read you. But what do I do instead? Read a new release or ARC.... #badbrittany
LWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're so close. You can do that, then Us and then SKoP. There I've made your TBR for you. #yourewelcome
I didn't like The Edge of Never, so I've been hesitant to try Killing Sarai. I'll let you go first. :)
You're going to thoroughly enjoy What You Left Behind. Sad and cute all rolled into one.
Sweet was good but nowhere as amazing as Easy. There's another book releasing sometime this year to go in that series. #awesome

    1. I am trying so hard to resist the new releases. All the pretties I was so excited about just sit there all sad and ignored - no more I say. And you're so kind to make my TBR for me! Such a pal! :) Wow, I think you're the first person I've seen who has not liked The Edge of Never. Most people rave. I've only read one by Redmerski - The Moment of Letting Go which I really liked. And I'm totally into Killing Sarai soooo... we'll see. Sad + cute = my idea of book perfection. No way! There's another Contours of the Heart book coming?! Why have I not seen this yet? Off to stalk Tammara's website...

  9. YES! Read what you want -- I am trying a different tactic this year and totally regretting it! All I want to do is re-read everything

    1. Oh my gosh, a re-reader... you are a strange breed to me. LOL I almost never, ever re-read. I re-read a couple from the Addicted series earlier this year because my friend was hosting a re-read readalong in anticipation of the release of the last book, but other than those I bet it's been *years* since I've re-read anything. I just can't do it. No matter how much I loved it the first time I feel like I have sooo many books I want to read that I can't spend time re-reading. Ugh, I have way too many rules for myself. LOL
