It's a chance to share news: a post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books,
and share what's coming up on your blog in the week ahead.
T H E W E E K I N R E V I E W
The week started with the mid-term elections. I was disappointed to see that Florida went almost totally red yet again. Disappointed, but not surprised. Our governor, Ron DeSantis, is the worst (a combative bully) but I feel fairly confident in saying that he will be on the Republican presidential ticket come 2024. He has repeatedly enacted laws that repeal or ban basic rights. He has banned the teaching of critical race theory in schools, signed a "Don't Say Gay" law into effect for schools, banned transgender athletes from playing girl's/women's sports (even stripping a transgender athlete of a title), and the list goes on and on. If you support those initiatives, or disagree with my thoughts, that's fine. Feel free to comment (respectfully), but I'm sharing my views on my space. :)
The rest of the week was all about Hurricane Nicole. Just south of us was hit pretty hard, but once again my area was lucky and was spared the worst of it. Thursday we were pounded by high winds and heavy rain but no damage at my house. My boss, who lives on the riverfront, could not say the same. His boat dock was completely submerged and the river had risen into his yard and was lapping at the pool deck. This is the third time in two years (for hurricane damage) and he and his wife are done. They'll be moving before next year's hurricane season starts.
BookBub shared the coziest books to read this holiday season. Are there any on the list you want to read? I know some of you have already read several of these (I'm looking at you, Sam 😊). Alice Cochrun's Kiss Her for Me is already on my TBR so hopefully I'll get to it soon.
This week's 80's music fix isn't by an 80's artist but is a pretty awesome remake of an 80's classic. Sam Smith covering Whitney Houston's How Will I Know. That voice!!

HOW WAS YOUR WEEK?
I'D LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT IT!
I'm disappointed in my state too. I was hoping enough people had the sense to vote for Evan McMullin instead of Mike Lee. Unfortunately, Mike Lee retained his seat in the senate. Grrr.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your house wasn't damaged. I don't blame your boss. Even though Florida's beautiful, I wouldn't live there thanks to the hurricanes ... and humidity.
As far as the cozy books for the holidays, I really want to read EIGHT NIGHTS OF FLIRTING, THE WINNERS, ONCE UPON A DECEMBER (I now have the Anastasia song in my head), JUST LIKE MAGIC, THE TSARINA'S DAUGHTER, and SNOWED IN FOR CHRISTMAS.
I hope you have a great week!
My Post
Jenni - Sorry to hear things didn't go your way in your state, either. It's frustrating to see things continue down such a dangerous path.
DeleteI hope you're able to get to all your holiday reads! :)
It pains me to see people so radical and agains basic human rights to be elected Tanya. What does it say about the people who vote for them? Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI feel just the same, Sophie. It's so disheartening.
DeleteIt took one hurricane evacuation to get me to move back over the intracoastal from Jax Beach. I don't know how people who have the means to move, stay. I actually read 7 of those books (I just DNFed an 8th this morning. YA doesn't always work for me these days), and I put The Rewind on hold too. Great list!
ReplyDeleteGlad you are safe from the Hurricane! Have a great week. Here's my SP: https://bonniereadsandwrites.com/2022/11/13/the-sundaypost-running-backs-catching-up-and-giving-back/
ReplyDeleteI barely understand anything about American politics but I don’t at all understand how anyone can vote for the inhumane platforms of DeSantis, Trump and their ilk.
ReplyDeleteOn the lighter side, your random meme made me chuckle :)
Wishing you a great reading week
While I agree with your politics and the direction so many states seem to be going (backwards!), I'm slightly encouraged that the red wave didn't materialize. I was terrified of what the country would look like if all those radical people were elected. I'm guessing we'll be seeing another 2-4 years of extreme divisiveness until more of the election deniers and MAGA people are eventually voted out and calmer heads can prevail. Till then, we just hang on by our fingernails.
ReplyDeleteGlad the worst of the hurricane missed you - hope you enjoy your books this week!

I totally feel your pain. I also live in a state that goes red every time. I still vote, but my state gets called for republicans the second the polls close. I'm scared of DeSantis becoming the presidential nominee in 2024. He seems very dangerous.
ReplyDeleteGlad the worst of Nicole missed you. I have Kiss Her Once For Me on my holiday tbr too!
Yes, our state went red as well. Thankfully we held the senate.
ReplyDeleteMy niece's dad has moved out of Florida 3 times in the last 10 years. He loves Florida, and leaves because of the hurricanes! He's back in Arizona for good now, I think. I was watching the midterms closely as well, and was heartened by Arizona re electing Mark Kelly, and not electing the terrible SOS candidate. We sill have to wait and see what we get for governor. It's still close.
ReplyDeleteWendy - I was glad to see that Kelly won. I see that the governor race is still too close to call. Heaven help us if Lake wins. She's a nightmare.
DeleteGlad you weren't hit hard by Nicole.
ReplyDeleteI finished Before I Let Go and loved it, I'll post my review this week.
Thanks Alicia. Can't wait to read your review of Before I Let Go!
DeleteYeah I do think the mid term elections caused some wins and losses for both sides--which I think is a good thing, let both sides have some wins and losses. I personally love DeSantis, but I can see how he can be seen as combative, as many republican's don't fight much on things that they care about (so ppl aren't used to it lol). They tend to just fade in the background and not battle. So I can understand that. I am not sure if he will be on the ticket, just because of Trump *sigh* I do think DeSantis is more likeable than Trump though and at least stands by his principles whereas I think Trump is more about himself (this coming from someone that did vote for him). I know we have different political views, but I definitely respect and understand where you are coming from and why some people struggle with him. So enough politics haha (if you ever want to talk this more deeply, feel free to slide into my DM's, I love open convos' on issues)
ReplyDeletehaha yeah the Psy Changeling covers aren't the greatest, especially the older ones. I mean they have a classic PNR feel to them. I really loved the newer cover for Slave to Sensation though. But the books are so fun to read, and the pack dynamics are my favorite to read. I am so happy you loved the COHO book. From the reviews, I don't think she is an author for me. But I can definitely see why she is so well loved. Did you know her books now sell more than the Bible?? So her books are highly accessible to many people in the world which is cool.
I'm not happy about living in a state where Sarah Hucklebee is going to be the next Governor, but I'm stuck here for now.
ReplyDeleteIs that a picture of your bosses house??? WOW that water is close! Our family's house is in Hudson and doesn't seem to be effected by flood waters or anything (knock on wood).
I can't believe she won!!!
DeleteI love Florida but I couldn't live there now, I don't think, as red as it is. then again I live in probably the reddest part of Michigan so maybe I'd be used to it! :) My county is so red that EVERY sign was Republican- I literally saw TWO Democratic signs all season. People are afraid to put them up. Some guy at work was shocked at the results on Tuesday because of all the signs, he assumed the whole state was going republican, but it's just super red around here actually.
ReplyDeleteWow that picture.
Greg - Your area sounds as bad as those surrounding me. I live in a large city that is pretty evenly split, although slightly more red. But the small towns surrounding the city? Red through and through. Like you said, covered with Trump signs (and DeSantis) and those horrible Let's Go Brandon signs. It's so bad.
DeleteSome guy here has a LEt's Go Brandon banner hanging in his garage. It's just so vile lol.
DeleteI was dismayed by the Florida results so I agree with you. I'm glad you weren't terribly impacted by the weather. yes most of the Psy-Changeling books do have cringy covers but I love the stories. The followup spinoff has better covers and I still love the books.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Anne - Yes, the results in FL were pretty dismal but I was encourage to see victories elsewhere.
DeleteThankfully the insides of the Psy books are much much better than the outsides. Haha.
DeSantis is horrible. Sadly Ohio isn't a whole lot better. Our governor isn't AS bad, but we have some real DeSantis wannabes here. Glad the hurricane missed you!
ReplyDeleteSamantha - I cringe to think DeSantis could be the next presidential candidate. I don't know who is worse - him or Trump. *shudder*
DeleteI can't stand DeSantis! He's such a bully. Even though I don't like Trump either I had to laugh when he called him DeSanctimonious, lol!
ReplyDeleteSo happy that you didn't get pounded by Nicole! I'd be moving if I were your boss too. I wonder if he'll have a hard time selling his property.
Yes the Psy-Changeling covers are kind of cringe worth, haha! I think the spinoff series covers are much better. :)
Rachel - He really is a bully. Last year when schools continued to enforce mask mandates, he threatened to withhold funding to those schools. So let's put kids at risk, because he says so. Ugh! And that's just one example.
DeleteI swear, every time I share one of the Psy covers on the blog I cringe. LOL I agree that the spin-off covers are so much better!
That is so crazy that someone like that gets in and is a potential Presidential candidate. I cannot talk though as I am in the UK and we are in a mess. People constantly vote to make their lives worse. It baffles me! What makes it worse is that some of our family members vote for them. What can you do. The literal evidence is staring them in the face and still they ignore it!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine how scary a hurricane must be, let alone to have a whole season of them. I am glad that your house is ok.
Have a good week ahead!

Emily - You've definitely had your share on political upheaval in the UK lately. And it's crazy isn't it, watching people vote and you know it's only making things worse? Like you said, the evidence is right there and it's ignored. Very frustrating.
DeleteHope you have a great week!
I feel so bad for Florida folks. I'm pretty confident he's gonna be the republican golden child for the next election too. It's gonna be gross.
ReplyDeleteYuck, DeSantis. I can't stand the dude. I'm surprised at how the election went here in Colorado. Outside of the cities, this place is extremely MAGA. I saw exactly 0 blue yard signs while trick-or-treating on Halloween. I was extremely shocked that Lauren Boebert's race is close enough for a recount. I'm sure she'll win, but I was not expecting that at all! My parents and neighbors love BoBo (for reasons I don't understand).
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your house is safe from the hurricane! Have a great week.
I'm glad you made it through the storm ok! We've been watching a lot of news coverage the past week, just seeing how the elections were going to turn out.
ReplyDeleteI hate that Florida keeps getting hit. I know we've had our moments in Louisiana, too. My aunt and uncle were hit pretty hard in the previous hurricane. Their pics look like your bosses.
ReplyDeleteOn the BookBub list I've only read Merry LIttle Meet Cute, but I'd certainly love to get to the others this season, but that won't happen - at least not all of them. Hopefully I'll knock a few off the list.
I just love Sam Smith's voice. So good! Thanks for sharing.

DeSantis and a hurricane? YUCK. I hope this week is better!
ReplyDeleteThose hurricanes sound so scary. I'm glad to read you guys are safe!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't seen that BookBub list before. And I haven't read any of the books on there. I definitely need to check some of these out. :D
Have a great read and happy reading.
So glad the hurricane didn't do any damage to your house!!
ReplyDeleteI live in Missouri and we had some disappointing election results as well. I am not a fan of your govenor but I will be surprised if he doesn't end up being elected our next president. I am glad that you escaped any damage. I hope that you have a fantastic week!
ReplyDeleteThings were not much better here in Texas. I'm amazed that the Republicans continue to win elections here. They've been in power for nearly 3 decades, yet they continue to blame the other side for the state of everything. We've done nothing to fortify our grid or protect the lives of the kids who keep dying from gun violence in our state. Like Florida, our lawmakers have decided to focus on bullying marginalized communities even more.
ReplyDeleteBut enough of that...I'm so glad you made it through the hurricane safely. We get our share of those here too, and it is never fun. I can't say that I blame your boss. I'd be looking to move too!
Ethan - Isn't is crazy how they've predominantly been in office for decades and somehow still hold others accountable for all the issues? They're the ones in the position to affect change so how is it anyone else's fault. Funny how that works.
DeleteIt was close here in VA but we mainly stayed blue this time. I'm of a similar opinion about DeSantis. I think he's gross and I also think he's about to become the GOP golden child since so many see him as an alternative to you-know-who.
ReplyDeleteSuzanne - Glad to hear things went better in VA. DeSantis is a total bully but I agree that the GOP will latch on to him as more and more of them seem to distance themselves from The Orange Cheeto.
DeleteNicole is my sister-in-laws name ♥ but I'm so thankful it didn't hurt you and that you were able to stay safe! Thank goodness! And I'm off to go check that list for holiday books, I think I've read over 50 the last few years? Idk but I just finished another one yesterday that I'm adding to my Christmas Romance book list on our blog. I'm the only one that reads them on there, sigh lol.
ReplyDeleteJen - I always have such big plans of reading some holiday books every December but it rarely works out. Maybe this year! :)
DeleteI'm glad your house was okay, but your poor boss!!! And yeah, DeSantis is the worst and I definitely feel bad for people that live in Florida. It's just so messed up the things he's been able to do to deny rights, etc. Sorry that Florida mostly went red. KY is basically the same, but we did vote no for the abortion amendment so thank goodness for small victories!
ReplyDeleteLove the cozy reads article. I plan on buddy reading Kiss Her Once for Me in December. I also have Season of Love to read. It's not on the list, but I am currently reading A Cat Cafe Christmas and it's so cute.
