This or That Book Tag

I've recently seen Grace at Rebel Mommy Book Blog and Aleen at Lampshade Reader do this tag so I figured I would join in. The tag was originally created by Ayunda at Tea & Paperbacks.

READING ON THE COUCH OR IN BED?

Definitely not the bed. I've never been able to read comfortably in bed so I'll take the couch.
Or, preferably, my big comfy chair in the library.

MALE MAIN CHARACTER OR FEMALE MAIN CHARACTER?

Male main character. Because there seems to be so many fewer of them - and because
I love being inside the main male character's head.

SWEET SNACKS OR SALTY SNACKS WHILE READING?

I rarely snack while reading but if I do it's always something salty/savory.
I basically have no sweet tooth.

TRILOGIES OR QUARTETS?

Trilogies.

FIRST PERSON POV OR THIRD PERSON POV?

First Person POV. Always!

BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU LAUGH OR BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU CRY?

At the risk of sounding like a total masochist, I always prefer a book that has me
so emotionally invested that I cry more than a book that can make me laugh.

READING AT NIGHT OR IN THE MORNING?

I'm am *not* a night owl so reading at night rarely lasts long (Zzzz....).
I'm a total morning person so reading during the day always suits me best.

LIBRARIES OR BOOKSTORES?

Nothing beats time spent browsing in a bookstore.

BLACK BOOK COVERS OR WHITE BOOK COVERS?

There is such a glut of black book covers that I find myself more drawn
to the clean aesthetic of white covers.

CHARACTER-DRIVEN OR PLOT-DRIVEN STORIES?

Character-driven. I'm always, always about the characters.
Without characters I can connect to, I'm not even invested in the plot.

HOW ABOUT YOU?
WOULD YOU RATHER A BOOK MAKE YOU LAUGH OR CRY?
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SNACK WHILE READING?

  1. Fun tag! I so agree with you about the books that make you cry, masochistic as well I guess! I mean, I like to laugh, but when I cry it's hit me someplace really special.

    1. Yes! Glad I'm not the only weirdo that likes to be moved to tears. :)

  2. I don't really snack while reading either, and reading in bed is not very comfortable so I'd rather be on a couch or in a comfy chair!

I'm SO with you on character-driven novels. I'll take those over a great plot/not great characters novel any day.

    1. I swear, I can get by with very little plot as long as I'm reading about great characters. :)

  5. Ha - I also fall asleep if I'm reclining at all past about 10 pm. And I love savory/salty snacks!

    1. We are so in the minority, Jen! Everyone else can keep their chocolate, though. Give me chips or cheese and crackers and I'm a happy girl.

  6. Okay, I love this post and will get to that, BUT FIRST I haven't been actively commenting for a looong time, so I haven't been here for a while, but Tanya, your new look is GORGEOUS.

I so have to agree with your first answer, reading in the bed can be so uncomfortable. I do like to read in bed sometimes, but only sitting up, I have no idea how people can lay on bed for hours reading. I definitely prefer trilogies over quartets, and first person POV is always the best. It's a lot rarer for me to connect with the characters if the book is written in 3rd person.

    Wonderful tag/post!

    1. Thank you so much, Veronika! And you're not *too* behind because the new look is only 2 months old. :) I'm still totally in love with it!

Same here - I just don't connect nearly as well with 3rd person POV.

  7. this tag is so much fun. I feel I learned more about you :) interesting that we are opposite in some ways. Like I read in bed, always eat snacks, like female voices, read at night and mostly from library . But I do like character drive, white covers and prefer tears over smiles :)

  8. What a fun tag! I think I'm going to do this, too.

And your answers for "BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU LAUGH OR BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU CRY?"... "Making Faces" and "The Bronze Horseman" are two of my ultimate favorite books. They are such powerful stories. So I definitely know I need to check out the two others you mentioned!

    1. Yay! I hope you will do this tag, Rachel! Can't wait to see your answers!

Oh my gosh, The Bronze Horseman... Favorite. Book. Ever. And yet I still haven't brought myself to continue the trilogy. I keep prolonging the anticipation.

  11. This is a wonderful tag! I both kind of books - that make me cry or make me laugh :) They're amazing in their own way... Favorite snack while reading? Chips, cookies, and chocolate! And I like to read during the day too! Great answers :)

  12. We have so much in common, except that I prefer laugh out loud books. I love emotional reads too but my heart isn't always ready for a breakdown, lol.

  13. We shared a lot of answers!! I wish I had no sweet tooth though. Oh an Making Faces and The Nightingale so made me cry. First person POV and character driven books are my favorites. Love the white covers too!!

    1. The Nightingale practically destroyed me. Kristin Hannah's books almost always destroy me.

  14. OMG we have a lot of preferences. I love white book covers too because they're just pleasant to the eyes! I, however, can't choose between happy or sad books. I love angsty emotional books that will make me cry. After all, a good cry once in a while is nice. But sometimes when the story gets heavier, I pause and read something light and flirty to balance my emotions out. LOL

    1. I agree that sometimes too much angst and heartache needs to be balanced out by something lighter. But given the choice I usually go for the angst. LOL

  15. This is so fun! I definitely prefer crying too! But I also like when there's some humor injected into a darker book. I NEVER snack while reading. Ever. This is not a thing for me. I do read at night and in my bed though! We are opposites there. But most of the other stuff we have in common :)
