The Sunday Post #160

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's a chance to share news - a post to recap the past week on your blog,
showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is
coming up on your blog in the week ahead. You can find the info here:

  • Yesterday was a busy one with plenty of running around: had a hair appointment, got the oil changed in my car, bought a ceiling fan, went by Home Depot to pick up paint samples (the master bedroom makeover continues), and finally out to dinner. Hopefully today will be spent mostly at home.
  • I bought my mom a new-to-her (but actually refurbished from Amazon) iPhone and added her to our plan. She'd been using an ancient flip phone that did nothing more than make calls. My sisters and I have been trying to get her to text for years and she's resisted. Now texting lessons for my 74 year old mom begin. LOL
  • On the web: Suzanne Collins announced a Hunger Games prequel coming out next May. Can't wait for that one! GH shared a list of the top 25 books for your summer reading list. I loved seeing both The Bride Test and Mrs. Everything on there.
  • Because it's insanely hot here and because this drink looks insanely refreshing...

WHAT I READ IN THE LAST WEEK:

Despite it taking me almost 2 weeks to read (what the heck?), I totally enjoyed Red, White & Royal Blue. It was impossible not to fall a little in love with Alex and Henry and I enjoyed the balance between relationship + politics. Superfan was pure Sarina Bowen goodness. Silas was such a swoony hero - totally sweet, so thoughtful, without ego, and just such a good guy. Plus, I'm a sucker for a second chance romance.

WHAT I'M CURRENTLY READING:

I'm only 50 pages in to this one but, man, am I feeling bad for these kids! Especially Morgan, who is dealing with so much (gender identity, grief, bullying) and is doing it largely alone. I suspect this one is going to make my cry. *grabs tissues just in case*

PHYSICAL BOOKS:

My pre-order of Storm and Fury arrived. Even though I ordered just the book (signed and personalized) they sent the special edition Book Beau pouch anyway. I didn't really want or need it so I'll see if my niece wants it. And in the Amazon deal of the week, I snagged a paperback of Kill Devil Hills for $4.15! I read this one years ago and loved it so much and for some reason it never occurred to me that it was released in paperback. I assumed it was ebook only but I have absolutely no idea where I got that assumption from. LOL I saw author Sarah Darlington share a pic of the book on IG this week and immediately clocked over to Amazon. So excited to have this one and now I definitely need to do a reread.

How was your week? Any new books? Any news to share?
I'd love to hear about it!

  1. Whew Tanya, I think I'm tired just reading about that massive to-do list you worked on this week. Feels good to get it done, I'm sure!

Good luck teaching your mom to use a touch screen 😂 should be fun! Yay for getting her to make the switch finally lol!

    1. Definitely felt good to get so much accomplished on Saturday... but this girl was also tired! LOL

Teaching Mom the ways of the iPhone has been an exercise in patience. Hahaha!

  2. We documented the day my (almost) 75 year old dad sent a text. Then we sent screen shots to the entire family, because it was that newsworthy. My dad has my old phone. He never gets anything new. I am sure your mom will catch on quick.

    1. Oh my gosh, that is so cute that y'all sent screen shots of your dad texting. LOL My mom sent her first text the other night to let us know she got home from our house okay. And then she called us to make sure we got the text. Bahahaha!

  3. Your day sounds so busy, but very productive! You got a lot done so that's exciting, but I hope you get some rest today. Oh wow! That should be fun and interesting teaching your mom to use the iPhone! It's definitely not a flip phone! :D
I'm glad you enjoyed Red, White & Royal Blue. That was a very charming read!
I hope you have a good week, Tanya!

    1. Yeah, the new iPhone lessons have been... interesting. LOL
RW&RB was a lot of fun. Not a 5 star read for me, but I still totally enjoyed it.

    1. Silas was the best!! :)

Oh my goodness, my husband started throwing all this complicated information at her about apps she'll probably never touch. I was like, "just show her how to send a simple text and then stop!" LOL

  5. Oh I did love Silas! He was so perfect!!! My mom's work upgrades her phone every year and she HATES it. She is sure they are playing tricks on her and refuses to learn how to use it. So she has a super fancy iPhone X that is pretty much just a way to check email.

    1. Oh my gosh, your poor mom. Too bad they won't let her keep the same phone for more than a year!

  6. I got Storm and Fury this week too!!!! I will begin it tomorrow ;-) And I am thinking of buying a smartphone to my mom as well with all the teaching it does entail LOL Have a wonderful week Tanya!

    1. Hope you're enjoying Storm and Fury! My mom saw it sitting around my house the other night and started asking me questions about it. Now she wants to read the original trilogy! LOL

Sounds like we need to have a joint training session with both our moms. LOL

  7. My 74 year old mother has all the latest tech gear, and mostly knows how to use it, she bought herself an Apple Watch for Christmas which she loves, and upgraded to the latest iPad for Mother’s Day, and will upgrade her i phone for her birthday My father though, who is 73, is a Luddite. LOL

    Have a great reading week

    1. That's awesome that your mom is so tech-savvy! :) Too funny about your dad, though. LOL Mine was the same way. He did own a cell phone but it was super basic and he never did more than an occasional phone call. Everything else was beyong his comprehension... or interest. Ha!

  8. lol Your running around sounds too close to my daily life right now and I don't have room in my head for any additional details. Have a great week with some good books!

  9. Good luck teaching her how to use an iPhone!! It's always interesting trying to teach someone how to use that type of technology. It's pretty daunting! I hope it goes well. Also, ooh, I am soooo curious about what colours you picked for the master bedroom makeover!

NEED those margaritas. I'm really loving watermelon drinks this season? Which is weird, because usually I don't like the way it mixes with alcohol? Like, it makes the taste of the alcohol super in my face. I don't know, but I'm really digging what I've tried recently so I think it just wasn't my time for that particular taste. *DID I REALLY JUST SEND A LONG COMMENT ABOUT WATERMELON DRINKS? YES.*

Can't wait for The Hunger Games prequel! I feel like we all knew it would eventually happen but knowing how close it is? I'm pumped!

Have a good week! Sorry for the long comment, aha!

    1. Yep, she's plenty intimidated by technology in general and the new phone in particular. But we're just going to show her the very basics and see how it goes. So far so good!

Rant away about watermelon drinks, my friend! LOL I very rarely drink but man that watermelon margarita is calling my name.

The Hunger Games prequel has been a looong time coming. Fingers crossed that it'll be worth the wait!

  10. I totally missed that about The Hunger Games prequel! How exciting!

Ah, flip phones... Those were the days. I kinda miss mine. I got up to far less trouble and didn't waste hours of my life aimlessly playing with various apps! Your poor mum has no idea what she is in for! lol Although, texting is an absolute necessity. I'd rather text someone than call them anyday of the week... (I've no idea what that says about me as a person but I'm not sorry, lol.)

    1. So true. Yes, we can practically launch rockets with our phones now, but we also waste a whole lot of time of them, too. But texting... can't do without it now! I will always text before calling!

  11. My mom has never texted either. I don't think she really wants to but the rest of us all want her to lol! We keep trying to talk her into it.

I'm kind of excited and curious about this new Hunger Games prequel!

    Have a great week Tanya!!

  12. Oh, I'm so glad you liked Superfan. Silas is the roomate in the first book, Rookie Move, and I really liked him. I'm excited to read that one. HEYY Clean Sweep! That looks familiar! Hope you enjoy it when you get to it.

Yep, your review of Clean Sweep totally got me interested! :)

  13. We gt my father a phone but just the basic. I couldn't even imagine him with more. He couldn't handle the landline some days lol

We got Kevin's parents hooked on our passed on Blackberries and then iphones and now they are very hip! He does have to do all the updates and show them how to do more things whenever they visit though.

    1. Sounds like my dad. :) Technology really passed him by. He did have a cell phone but it was super basic and he never used it for anything other than an occasional phone call. I've given my mom an old iPad and an old Kindle and she enjoys both... but any updates are on me. LOL

  14. You did have a busy day, but it sounds like you got a lot accomplished. My in-laws who are in their 70's are very electronically advanced, but I think that's probably not the norm, lol. Good luck with your lessons. :)

    1. That's so cool that your in-laws are up on the latest tech! I'd say that's definitely not the norm. People in their 70's now aren't usually accustomed to the current technology. So good for them! :)

  15. Ha! Good luck teaching your mom about texting! My mom is actually good at that sort of thing, but my dad is a lost cause. We don't even try to get him to understand anything technological anymore.

I'm glad you're enjoying Birthday---I really want to read that one!

Birthday was a tough, tough read. Really hurt my heart and I'm not sure if I'll review it or not.

  16. I am currently reading Red White and Royal Blue and honestly I'm not loving it as much as everyone has loved it. It's good but it's not the best book I've ever read! I still need to start the Brooklyn Bruisers series soo bad!! I just love Sarina Bowen soo much! As we both know we LOVE Him and Us! I loved Meredith Russo's debut so I'm definitely interested in her newest novel. Have a great week!!

    1. It's so hard when a book is hyped as much as RW&RB has been. It's like, how can it possibly live up? I hope you're still enjoying it, though. It was a solid 4 star book for me. I just started my (insert large #) re-listen of Us on my drive in to the office this morning. Blake just made his first appearance... love him! :)

  17. Have fun teaching your mom how to text and use an iPhone. My parents were both late to the smartphone game too but now they love them.

Mmmm, you have me wanting to try a watermelon margarita now. That just sounds like the perfect summer beverage.

  19. The joys of showing those resistant to technology is a pain but so worth it and I bet your mom will be texting in no time. I had to show someone how to use Uber the other day and my mind was blown they'd never used it before.
